Sharron Report 11 Mar 2011 12:43

I float well but don't much like being away from the side.

I floated for a long time and prodelled myself along by kicking my feet up and down.Onr day my dad said he did not understand why I did not get my arms going as well.Actually it was besause I had not thought to.

After that it was backstroke all the way.

Sheila I agree, if he tried that today he would be pulled up
for bullying, its a shame that you couldn't be left to get the
confidence to swim in you're own time, am sure you would
have mastered it.

I too have a swimming 'phobia'. In the final year of junior school, we had a new teacher who was mad keen that all his class should be able to swim. There were about 4 of us who couldn't - by the end of the year I was the only one and boy was I made to feel I'd let the side down! That put me off, plus an incident where I was shouted at (by no less than the swimming tutor assinged to our class) to stop being pathetic and get in the deep end. I had armbands on but was terrified as was out of my depth. He wouldn't get away with that today!

Mayfield my fear of swimming started when I was about eleven.
I was good and getting on fine when a boy pulled me under as
a joke and from then onwards, a lead balloon, oops excuse the
pun. A natural sinker you say, have to remember that one.

Emma,
Like you I have never learnt to swim despite several attempts, I'm convinced I'm a natural sinker! Perhaps it's because of all the lead I absorbed when I was working with it as an apprentice!!

Ann I can do breast stroke but like I said have to be
near something as a safety net. Won't go on a cruise, OH
been trying to get me to go on one for ages but I tell him
the ocean does not have a wall and with my luck the ship
would sink.haha

I was 50 when I learned to swim. Still don't go out of my depth but can swim breast stroke OK now. I taught myself with sheer determination

Morning all, reading what you are fearful of I can see some that
make me quite uneasy.

Ann never been up in a hot air balloon so don't know if I would
like the sensation, suppose height would be a problem. Other
things that make me wary are lifts on the outsides of buildings
and would never think of walking out over something high up that
has a glass floor.

I have also been learning to swim for more years than I care to
remember, if I have a float than I'm OK or a wall close by so I
can hold on to if I panic. What a wimp.

1.
Terrified of spiders, one ran across my foot when I was about 8 and I fainted, I can even sense one if it is the room.

2.
Cannot swim which is ironic as we have a lovely large swimming pool, yet I can only walk around the shallow end. Yes I have had lessons 48 so far and no further on!

Oh yes, I think most of us have a fear of dementia, which is strange because I am sure if you have it you wouldn't know! Maybe in the developing stage though. I think I fear more seeing my OH developing it.

Jude if it ran when it was on your hand and you ran too, it would come with you!!!!

My fear is snakes whether they are on the tv or in a book or in real life
i just cant look at them My OH bought me a lovely book all about differant
animals but in the middle of the book is pages and pages of snakes
i have never picked up the book since .which is a shame because the book it's self is worth reading in fact it's in the attic now ..spiders was my other fear but now i'm not to bad with them if i see one i cover it with an old glass and put a piece of paper or card under the rim of the glass and that way i can throw the spider out of the door or window ...

I think fear of balloons is quite well known. Does that include hot air balloons as well Emma?

I wouldn't say they frighten me but I don't like spiders.
I won't cross a field of cows but I don't think i am scared of them, it is more self preservation because they can hurt en mass.

I do have a phobia about vomiting in public. And the only time I ever have I was about five years old!! (65 years ago so quite an irrational fear).

I also have a fear about fire i.e. being trapped in a fire. No I have never been even near.

But I think may fears are irrational.

Hi Merlin..... I forgot that one.
I too hate mirrors, morning OR night, there is some *REALLY STRANGE WOMAN* who stares back at me.
I don't remember ever having met her either.... terrifying isn't it?
If I sit here long enough will remember ALL my fears. Not a good idea I suppose.
