Totally agree with National Service coming back but I dont think it will happen just like hanging will never come back not even for Terrorism.

I think we should go for Boot-camp type rehab centres, strict discipline, up at 6am , 5 mile jog before breakfast etc etc , of course with full medical back up, but they stay there until they are clean total clean for at least 4 weeks and made aware that to re offend they will go through the same but double up on clean weeks ,so next time 8 weeks clean,

nope coz drugs are rife in jail, its so easy to get them in, so most people start takign drugs to make prison life easier x

the other week a young man was in court for shop lifting, he admitted to 142 offences, he was hoping to be sent to prison so he would be forced to go cold turkey and end his nightmare on drugs, a lot of people inside are drug related crimes, and a lot need help to get away from the habit, but do they get it, NO

obviously in practicallity it wouldnt work it would probably cost far to much to train them n keep an eye on them,

I really don't think our troops would want "violent offenders" in their ranks? people they couldn't trust or rely on? putting guns in the hands of violent offenders on the 'inside' would probably prove more dangerous than the enemy they face 'outside'.

Give young offenders a choice perhaps...the 3 month sentence in prison, or 3 months army training...but then wasn't much the same tried already with 'boot camps'? back in the 80s?

Bev, the Supreme Court ruled that the Human Rights Act does not apply to soldiers abroad

If they were sent to Afghanistan what would stop them from going awol at the first opportunity? Would any professional soldier really want to fight beside someone who didn't want to be there, to rely on that person to keep him/her safe.

sending them to Afghanistan, just what most would love, free for all on drugs, fields and fields of the stuff, save all the bother of getting it to uk.

Rambling Report 1 Jul 2010 13:40

Well you may have a good point about it if they could be properly trained but since as Izzy points out our forces are already underpaid and underequipped..I don't think it's really viable to send out prisoners with no training and no choice.

Conan Report 1 Jul 2010 13:29

No good sending them to Afghanistan to fight ................... they would lose their human rights.

And we can't have that ............ can we ?

Izzy

Izzy Report 1 Jul 2010 13:11

what about reintroducing national service, that way we would save on prisons and maybe with the savings my son and his fellow soldiers would be able to get a decent wage for risking their lives on an hourly basis, with the most basic of provisions, next to no contact with their families......... think i better stop here before i get myself into trouble!! x
Rose, my son gets approx £16,000 per year for clearing IED's and he's never committed any crimes!!!

Rambling

Rambling Report 1 Jul 2010 13:11

For what purpose Beverley? clearing IEDs perhaps? would that just apply to 'serious' crimes...or just everyone in prison? send all the serial killers out there or just the kids who need a 'short sharp shock' ?........

StrayKitten

StrayKitten Report 1 Jul 2010 13:06

thats a very good idea bev lol x

I think they should be made to do some useful work - when I was a child there were working parties of prisoners on Dartmoor - let them earn their keep

" It now costs more to put someone in prison – £38,000 – than it does to send a boy to Eton."

Now what about.... all the young petty offenders being re-directed from prisons to public schools on first offence ...where they can have the opportunity to find some skills, some self respect and respect for others...... ??
