Talking of ice cream,
is the old fashioned block ice cream still available?
all I can find is this soft scoop muck........of course you know how its made to be "soft scoop"?
they fill it with..........AIR!!!

that MUST bulk it out a bit? I mean a lump of ice cream thats 1 third air isnt a full litre of ice cream, is it?

Bob
perhaps someone knows if I am wrong in that?

I can remember the smell of the only shop open in our village on a Sunday. The Dairy had a very distinct smell and we would go to buy block ice cream wrapped in news paper and as a treat malted milk biscuits baked in squares with "magic roundabout people" on them.

..didn't everyone have knitted socks? They were cream and thick - like fishermen's socks.
Now I come to think of it, I HAD to wear them when trying on shoes- usually for the winter term.
Of course, by the time summer came, I was in short (shop-bought) socks - and my shoes still fitted me!
In fact, they lasted soo long, by the time the summer holidays came, they would have cardboard 'insoles' in them to cover the holes in the soles!!
Then it was on with the new knitted socks and off to the shoe shop again....

...didn't realise my mum was so 'canny' LOL

We used to sit with Dad at the table and wait to have our slice of bread dipped in his soup........weren't we lucky :o) but it was always worth the wait lol

I remember the home knitted socks with the elastic garters that really cut into your legs.
I'm rather surprised that I haven't got varicose veins!

George,

Never heard of that one before, but reminded me that my grandad used to take milk in a medicine bottle with his snap for work........funny how peoples tales jog your memory.

Funny i should see this thread, but earlier this evening i was getting milk out of the fridge to find it had "gone off".and mentioned to my wife that it looked like cheese.

then suddenly into my brain came something i and possibly others did as well, we used to put milk into an aspirin bottle , the small ones you used to get, and then spend the rest of the day or longer shaking it until it turned to butter, or was it cheese.
Looking back now what a daft thing to do, but then we did not have all the electronic gadgets to play with, nor the money we thought it was great.

Shows you how old i am.but im sure we were happier than the kids today
I can just imagine giving this to my grandkids to do they would have me locked up

Yes Hayley...........I can smell my grandads coat now, he worked as a forman in Courtaulds for over 40 years. He used to hang his coat under the stairs and it gave off a lovely smell, must have been something in the factory air. I would walk to the gates to meet him in the school holidays when he was on 6/2 shift and link my arm through his with my head on his sleeve having a good smell of his coat!!

Aw I've got a lump in my throat now.........God Bless you Pops

Like the time Mum was in bed with flu, me about twelve, and had to cook Sunday dinner. Main course was fine, but did friut and custard for sweet, and the custard went lumpy. Little brotherand I, combined effort, put the custard trhough a flour sieve and got enough for MUm and she never knew about the mistake!!

Hello Rose,

I know, I just dont know where it came from! You were the lucky one with breakfast........dad used to do us porridge and always sprinkled it with salt and not sugar!

The real Scots way he said!
