JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jun 2010 00:02

A drastic thing has befallen the Canadian viewing audience.

BBC Canada* has stopped showing East Enders as of Friday (when I managed to tape a 9-yr-old episode of Antiques Roadshow) until September.

* "BBC Canada" is actually a specialty channel here, owned by a series of Cdn television companies, that started out, like most specialty channels licensed by our fine Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission (which we also have to thank for expensive cell phones and slow broadband), broadcasting interesting and otherwise unavailable content ... and has ended up, like the rest of them, full of schlock consisting of endless rude chefs, endless stupid people needing their houses sold or dredged, and a load of Canadian programs (similar in nature) readily accessible elsewhere.

It must be time for the annual airing of Judge John Deed, and East Enders just had to go, to make room.

Actually, we're getting Antiques Roadshow every day at noon and four and eight and midnight (I'm not kidding), Top Gear as many times a day, and oh look, Cracker, just for those who missed it 20 years ago ... and Black Adder and Fawlty Towers, for those who weren't born yet ...

I guess we Canucks are just too busy with our summer schedule of hanging out in the woods getting eaten by blackflies to stay current with things like East Enders. Or "BBC Canada" is in a credit crunch.

Weep for me when you have a moment. And do *not* start telling me what happened after the ugly baldy man's wife had her birthday party and he took her kids -- although you can tell me what happened at the birthday party, the second last episode we got, because No.1 "forgot" to set the VCR while he was watching FIFA on Wednesday morning.

Ah, but isn't everyone jetting off to their villas in the Maldives for July and August? At least that's probably what the TV Executives are up to, and as they are 'normal' people, expect everyone else to be doing the same.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jun 2010 00:12

Well that's just fine, SueMaid.

Kind of like "your grandmother's up a tree" then.

Shall I tell the joke? ;)

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jun 2010 00:15

Canadians don't have villas in the Maldives, sigh, DET.

We all have oceanfront properties in Miami. Or Malibu. Depending on which coast we're on.

I note that East Enders doesn't go on hiatus in the UK -- does it??

What sort of East End accent is that Hayley?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 20 Jun 2010 00:45

I think Hayley's been watching too many westerns.

You heard about the mean-looking three-legged dog that went into the saloon and ordered a beer?

Whaddaya doin' in here, three-legged dawg? asked the bartender.

The three-legged dog replied: I'm lookin' fer the man that shot mah Paw.

I'm going home for some quiche, and yes, a glass of red wine. Gotta make the quiche first, unfortunately. No.1 was supposed to get the eggs, but he probably hasn't bothered to read my email, so now he'll be all put-upon that he has to dress and walk to the corner for them.

So while I'm gone, you can organize yourselves to restage Tania's - that's it, Tania - birthday party for me. I don't know who was there at all, other than Tania and Sean and presumably Max, let alone what happened, other than her getting blotto possibly because Max spiked her drink, so you'll have to sort out the script and the cast and assign the roles without my help, I'm afraid!

We get UKTV, which you have to pay extra for, we are have pay TV, supplied with a dish on the roof, not cable, The only reason we have the extra channels if for East Enders, Coronation Street and Emmerdale. So if they take away those shows and Dr Who we will have the extra channels taken off.

I feel your loss Janey, so sad. This will also put you further behind us in OZ. We are about 3 months behind UK I think. I look forward to these small pleasures and to have them taken away would be horrid.

Stevie

Stevie Report 20 Jun 2010 10:42

Maybe BBC UK should take Canadas lead..............25yrs of Eastenders has a bad aging effect on people.

But then I suppose they'll replace it with another 5hrs a week of Cash In The Attic.........*puts head in hands*

Think I'll emigrate to Canada. lol
