Afternoon all,
Tracey thanks for letting me know about Wig- Wam, I'm going to have a look at there website this afternoon. The weather's not up to much today, one minute sunny, I put out my washing to dry, then it clouds over and we have an early April shower ! .
Just finished all the housework for the day - what a life :-S :-S
I hated Sunday's when I was young, so boring & nothing to do, now It would be easier & cheaper for me if the shops still closed Sundays as my 13 yearold daughter always wants money Saturday & Sundays for the local shoppingcentre ! Welcome new Kim, it's great on here, everybody is so friendly. BBL Flowers

Oh I am here at last!!!!

I tried to get on here yesterday and could'nt. I had a good go in the garden yesterday afternoon but could'nt gert on the thread last night.

This morning I had to log in six times which took absolutely ages and the on the last try I got the messages up on the thread but only Log In To Add Reply!!!!! and also when I looked at the posts there was only Report and no Delete or Edit.

When I posted my first post today I got an Error page come up and thought it had'nt posted. Think this all started when I put three lots of washing on the line!!!!! And why did that come up three times.........all very strange.......................

Anyway It is not wet here today and we have sunshine with a mixed cloudy and clear sky. It did rain a little last night late.

I rang Jane to tell her I could'nt get on here but she has'nt replied. I did it on her mobile and left a message.

I never liked Sundays much, was MADE to go to Sunday School which I found boring, much preferred Saturdays as we all used to go to Saturday morning pictures. I remember the tinned fruit salad too, my favourite was the little bit of cherry and the carnation milk poured all over it. We quite often had a Walls Vienetta but I think that was later.

Daughter and granddaughter both have birthdays tomorrow.

So much for the rain today, it's right blue skies and sunshine.

Lough out Loud :-)
Everybody you speak to used to have tinned salmon for their teas on a Sunday, we also did whatever the weather a roast dinner with pudding every week, even if the was sun was cracking the flags , there would be my mother sweating away over the cooker. She still does it now. Then always salmon sandwiches, she doesn't make those anymore, she says she sickened herself off salmon after all those years of having it on a Sunday.
On a Monday we always had left over Sunday roast beef with homemade chips - lovely !

Just going out in the garden to do a bit more. Just done some ironing. My mum used to pay me for doing the ironing when I was young. So much for a pillow case and tea towel etc. She only gave me the straight things to do. I suppose thats why I roned left handed when first married. I could'nt understand why I could'nt iron at first then realised I was putting the ironing board up the wrong way. Mums was always up left handed for her and I still iron with both hands now!!

Afternoon folks, can I add my welcome to NEW Kim, (sounds like some TV commercial, but I know what you mean). Does that make me OLD William then LOL? Kim, I do truly welcome you, but Frank, myself and David are a bit outnumbered by the gals on here!

I knew I'd pay for that wee bit of gardening yesterday. I had to get up about 3am to visit (as the American's say) the 'bathroom'. Strewth, I could hardly stand up straight, the pain in my back was something dreadfull. I inched my way across the landing and inched my way back again. When I got back in bed my back was throbbing. We've been out to the shops today and it's a job to know what to get for backache that really does the job. I had the TEN's machine on before I got dressed. Anyway, our guy on the market came up with a new one to me, Dogs Oil made by Mason's. I asked him if it would make me bark. He said no, but you'll find you'll stop at every tree! Apparently it was made originally to treat greyhounds. Well, it it's good enough for something that fast, it should be OK for something as slow as ME!

We used to use Tiger Balm, but you can't get the clear stuff any more (not at a reasonable price anyway) and the red stuff stains your clothes. So, I'll keep you all posted regarding the Dogs Oil, unless of course I end up at the vets with distemper or canker, or my nose goes wet....

Loved the posts about what weekends were like in the 'good old days'. Brings back what the thread started out as. I think that was what attracted me here and what my first posts were like. I think at the time I was going on about Saturday afternoon going up to the fishmongers and getting a pint of winkles, pint of shrimps, pint of cockles etc - which were for our Sunday tea. I recall my Mum made lovely trifles and there was always blanc mange, I loved that. And of course, no TV, good old steam radio, with a drama or a comedy.

You were a naughty lot, having a crafty fag. I must be a cissy as I didn't indulge until I was a teenager. I know some of the lads at school would go and have a crafty puff behind the bike sheds. I think someone gave me one once and I coughed my guts up. Dad smoked his Woodbines - or rolled ones with Old Holborn and a Rizla. I have smoked on and off and had a pipe at one time for quite some time. Pipe's are great when you're out for a walk to keep the gnats and midges away. But I haven't smoked for a long while. I could never smoke and 'do something' at the same time, and as I'm usually doing something, I guess I don't miss them.
Carmel has NEVER smoked, and when I first met her she was managing the tobacco kiosk in the local Tesco!
Do you remember when we used to go to the cinema and if you looked up at the beam from the projector, it was like a proper fog with all the cigarette smoke rising.

Right, enough rambling on, I'm off to have a fag (only joking) - other things to do. Catch you all later.

Jane Report 3 Mar 2012 16:28

Mel .,I must have been out when you rang. But I wouldn't have heard my mobile anyway as i turned it off yesterday at the cinema and forgot to turn it back on again.Normally its better to call me on the home phone as I don't always have my mobile nearby.I don't use it very often.

Back to shops being shut.I think it was early closing on Wednesday afternoons.(plymouth).When we moved here in 1985 I think some shops closed on a Thursday afternoon.Frank will know if I am correct.

It turned out to be really sunny and warm. But there is a stiff breeze.Chris has done the bonfire and he now stinks lol.I just spotted him bringing some logs in.That must means he reckons we will be having a fire soon. Not tonight though. If the temperature drops tomorrow as low as they say .then I will light one then.

Frank you mentioned looking up Memories of where you lived when young,so I thought i would look up my Childhood Village.........No -one has put any memories :-( :-( :-(.

Oh my word William , don't rub too much on you'll be running round like a rocket !!! and chasing all the rabbits !! LOL

It use to be half day closing on a Wednesday here ,i don't think any of the shops close now .
My favorite shop was called Cosy Corner ,it sold sweets, Cigarettes and Tobacco, the only day it was closed was Christmas day !!
The shelves had all the glass jars filled with sweets and there was a corner were the children's sweets were , i use to like the Lucky Bags !!
The shop is now a Charity shop ,but people still call it Cosy's

The other shop we used quite a bit was called Brunton's it was a cake shop!! i remember going in with mum and being allowed to pick my own cake , i always picked the chocolate bun with the chocolate icing on !!

They use to have a display cabinet in the window and there were bars of chocolate in it , i remember asking mum if i could have one and the lady serving gave me one , when i opened it it was fake Chocolate !!! just a piece of cardboard wrapped in silver paper !! :-S :-S

Afternoon All,

Welcome Kim and thanks for stirring some more memories for us! Every so often we flag a bit!

Sundays used to be so quiet years ago, hardly any vehicles about as there weren't all the sporting and children's activities and the only shop open would be the outdoor beer licence for a few hours in the morning. I seem to remember people had a 'lie in' on Sundays and can remember people grumbling at being woken by the milkman collecting his money!! When I was a teenager it would be the morning that men had their car bonnets up, doing adjustments, servicing and then the buckets would come out to wash the car. That used to be my job and hoovering the inside of the car too.......it would earn me half a crown!! :-D It was the day the lawnmowers would be in action as well! We had the tinned salmon followed by tinned fruit salad with the thick tinned cream or Carnat*ion Evap as well or a homemade trifle. Usually it was sandwiches on H*vis bread but if we had a salad (only in the summer!) I remember mum soaking peeled and sliced cucumber in vinegar. There would always be a cake too like Battenburg.

Round here on the main road they have removed quite a few of the lights from the top of the lamposts to save the council's lighting costs. We were saying the other day that years ago all the street lights used to go off at about 11.00pm till 6.00am.

I was listening to a radio programme yesterday and they said in Ireland they pay to have their bins emptied, according, I thin,k to how much rubbish is in them. It means everyone has locks on their bins so other folk can't put their rubbish in your bin, otherwise you would be paying extra and they would pay less. I assume you unlock it just before the bin men come!

Jane Report 3 Mar 2012 17:33

Oh Yes Trifles. With Hundreds and thousands sprinkled in the top.My Mum did amazing trifles especially her Sherry ones :-D :-D
I think Vienetta ice cream came in when I was in my teens.(could be wrong on that). But I do remember it was always a special treat.Mum would have tinned Salmon, Dad loved Sardines.I hated any kind of fish.I do remember lots of potted spreads..Yuk Yuk.Were they called Shiphams ?
Got to go I'm wanted on the phone BBL

Woof Woof William ;-)

Annx Report 3 Mar 2012 17:40

I have never smoked either, although I was the one who was sent to the shop for them until my late 20s. Listening to dad hacking in the mornings put me off for life!! The air in the living room would be like fog in the evenings (just like the cinema as William said) and my eyes used to stream. I used ask dad why he didn't just have the bonfire in there to breathe smoke instead of the garden and save himself a fortune in cigarettes....didn't go down well!! :-| :-|

Kim (Aus) it has been on our news too about your awful weather and the floods.

I had a giggle at jewellery class yesterday. The friend who sits next to me has been experimenting making beads from fleece where you wet it and soap it and roll it into balls, let it dry and then sew tiny beads on to decorate. The teacher had given her a tiny piece the other week to practise with, but she had decided she wanted to do a few more of them. Not wanting it to cost much she looked around to see what she could use.....................I think her CAT must be feeling chilly in places!!!! lol :-S :-S It worked too!! lol Bet he'll be legging it if he sees her with the scissors again!

Jane

Jane Report 3 Mar 2012 18:04

LOL Ann.Poor cat :-S.My sister could probably help out with a bit of material to work with. One of her dogs is a Spanish Water dog and the hair is like Chenille. It is beautifully soft and silky.Mind you it would probably be better for knitting with .

That was Hannah on the phone. She is in bed poorly with what sounds a bit like Flu :-S.Tonight she was supposed to be going out for her birthday bash with the girls to Covent Garden. So they are going to have to celebrate without her.Hopefully she will be fine by next Saturday which is her Birthday and Me Chris and James are going to spend the day with her (and meet the new love of her life :-D :-D)My neighbour is going to have Chester for the day as we will be leaving here just after 9 and won't be home until about 8pm.

William I have a Tens which I used when I had Sciatica.(caused by sitting badly using the laptop).I did find it quite helpful.I hope your poor old back eases up.

Home made Chips!!!!!!!.I don't know anyone who makes them now.Certainly not me.McCai* Homestyle are what I have. But I don't think you can beat homemade ones. When I went out for lunch the other week with Fitz I had some Twice Cooked Chips(not sure how that is done) but they were amazing!!.Fitz nicked a fair few :-S
I do remember Mum's old chip pan and basket.I think the fat was left in the pan and then melted again for the next lot of chips.

Frank Report 3 Mar 2012 18:21

Afternoon all,

William, When I was younger (SEEMS AGES AGO) and played football every weekend, we used Goddard's White Horse oils to relieve mussle strain after a match. Spelt like Camphorated oil, but was very good.

When my Dad made Blanc Mange. He could, and would use all the different colours in one very large bowl. I will never know how he did it, but he never had one colour running into another. That was always had with Carnation milk. Fruit and ice cream was another favourite, and again we would use carnation on it.

Dad was the best person in the world to make porridge, on a cold winters morning (No central heating and lino floors) he would call up the stairs that breakfast was ready. There would be a pot of steaming hot tea, then a massive saucepan of porridge made with Carnation milk. After a couple of bowls of that with Bread and Butter. (YES B & B) you were set up for the day. In the summer it was Shredded wheat, and cold milk. Provided it haden't gone off. The milk stood in a bath of cold water, in the Pantry. but often the milk had gone off, and you had a buttery substance on top. You either had it or left it, no other choice.

Sunday afternoon as a teenager was the cimema, 1/6d We would meet up for the four o'clock showing. which was two films plus the news. On arriving home 7.30ish it would be FRY UP time. for me Gammon Rasher, sliced new potatos fried and a couple of eggs. When no new potatos it would be cold mash fried. A couple of slices of Bread and Butter and a couple of cups of tea.

Yes Jane, Thursday was half day when I was young, but when I had the P.O. it was Wednesday afternoon. That was Cash and Carry and banking day for us. No peace for the wicked.

Flowers, Our Sunday dinner was always an "H" Bone of beef. That would go in the oven at 6.00am for a two o'clock dinner Wo be tied you if you were late. NO EXCUSES WERE ACCECPED. Dad always had the first slice which was the crackling edge and the fat with a vein of meat. Often Mum would make a suet pudding for "STARTERS" With gravy. Helped to fill you up. Any that was over we would fry on Monday after school, with syrup on. If you have never had it, It's worth a try.

Jane did you look on the "FIRTH" website. ??? they seem to cover every village and town in the Country. Brings back so many memories for me.

Mandy, Our local sweet shop would keep the jars of sweets in the window on display. I bought some Nutalls Pepermint lumps, and they were as soft as anything. I wrote to the Manufactures and they sent me a parcel of various sweets big enouth to feed the family on. Also once my Ex MIL made some mince pies, and I found a stone it mine. I sent it back to the Co-op, in Manchester (HEAD OFFICE) and received 8 x 2lb Jars of Mincemeat together with a selection of JAMS. Those days are long gone. The best you can expect now is a voucher for a £5.00.

Still on my own, and I disdn't realise how long I have been on here.

See you.

Frank
