Lovely to get some bargain dresses Fiona.I wish There are some smashing little dresses about at the moment .Block colours.Very 60's looking.I got a couple for Hannah's birthday.I think she will look stunning :-D

What a beautiful day.I even dragged Chester out this afternoon for a stroll.Shame he wasn't that interested :-S He exaggerated that limp of his lol to make me turn round and come home.I thought it was a bit cooler just now and put a jumper on.Now I'm sweating buckets ,so will have to and change out of it.

I don't remember any horse drawn carts when I was little. But we did have a lovely Cart Horse in the village called Rocket and he would pull the Hay Cart. The Farmer ,Mr Smallridge would let some of us ride on the back of the cart.I suppose today that wouldn't be allowed because of Health and Safety :-S.

Maureen .Loved the Swan Lake email.Amazing :-D :-D

Fiona, Why don't you buy that sort of spray on line. So easy, and saves you the train fare. I know you women like any chance to get to the shops, sorry.!!!!

I am trying to remember the beer company that use to come round the street," Something BEER AT HOME " Mum use to buy her crate of Guinness every week. She needed the iron after having major surgery back in the 40s At that time, she use to take RAW IRON CRYSTALS. that rotted her teeth and didn't do a lot for a siver spoon. !!!! It was kept in the "STORE" cupboard in the hall. That was full of tined fruit of every description. and anything they could store for a "rainy day"

Heres a little story for you.

Just after the war, a boy down the road was going to stay with his "GRAN" somewhere in Cambridgeshire. Which to me was the otherside of the world. He invited me to go with him. Mum packed a small case of tin meats, fruits, dried fruit, home made cake. and another case for my cloths, (NOT MANY) We got the bus to Liverpool street station, and a train to Cambridge, then another bus to his Grans. I got off the bus and left the small case with the food behind. His gran contacted the bus Company, but they said it haden't been haned in. I bet the conductor thought Christmas had come early. We never did find it, and Mum sent a food parcel to his gran later. I got a right ear bashing for that and I was only 7/8 years old.!!!!

I had a walk round the "ESTATE" (the garden) this afternoon, the snowdrops look great. and everything is coming to life. I thought about doing the lawn, but it's still a bit wet. So hope to get at it at the weekend, if it stays dry.

Ros is doing a chicken curry tonight, smells good.

New series on ITV at nine, Trevor Eve, can't think of the name. again. old age or what. :-D :-D :-D

Hav'nt sone much today at all. Did a errand or two for oh and washed some of the stuff out the cupboard. Cleaned the itchen door window and thats about it. Don't know where today went really. I did have a good gas to a friend just outside when going up the shop for oh.

When young we had a baker call and he had a hand cart first of all then later they had a little van and he would come to your door with that great big basket that Mandy was talking about. He would have cakes and siscuits and bread and rolls. Mum would sometimes buy bridge rolls. You don't see those now do you? we always had those at parties cut in half length ways and topped with egg or sardines.

We had the milkman with his horse and cart. OUrs was called Jo and I would go out with a carrot for his horse sometimes.

A rag and bone man with his horse and cart would come round on a regular basis too and sometimes in the late summer we would get an onion man with strings of onions on his handlebars. Mum always had a nice string of those. Then there was the knife sharpener man that walked the streets with a handcart with a big round stone on it and all his tools popped into holes along the front of the cart. He would always get the carving knife and garden shears to sharpen for us.

Sometimes in the summer we had a man come round selling Walls Icecream from a square barrow on wheels with a handle like a pram. He would be dropped off from a big van and picked up later.

Hi all. Thanks Frank for the e-mails today especially the last one about all the memories I could remember quite a few of them.

We also had a laundry van come round weekly I can just about remembr the mangle mum used when she did the washing.

Hopefully I should get my car back from the garage tomorrow so I will be able to get out and go to a garden centre and get some plants or bulbs. I am so glad that spring feels as if it is on the way just having lighter nights is nice. Today has been lovely.

Yes that new progamme with Trevor Eve looks good tonight I think its called Ransom and something but I am probably completely wrong.

'Beer at home means Davenports'. :-D

Incredible that email Maureen.....wish I was supple and could do the splits.......well I did nearly manage the last once on the wet bathroom floor. Such superb balance as well, didn't seem to ever look down or wobble. Loved the memories one too and can remember mum saying that about sitting there till you like it if I didn't want something to eat. lol

Went to the docs this morning......flippin heck, big red capitals on the digital board about not tolerating aggressive behaviour and the same message in red on notices on the outer glass door, then the same hit you in the eyes on the reception desk!

Jane

Jane Report 23 Feb 2012 19:30

Ann ,I will ask Chris if they have those signs up in the Surgery.

Just asked him ,and yes there is one on the main door and probably one on the digital sign thing that flashes.Goodness how times have changed.Isn't it sad. :-S

I used to be able to do the splits. And very proud I was too .Now if I tried to do them I would end up in A&E :-S :-S.Not a pretty sight.

I see Frank Carson has died .......Now that's a Cracker !!

I love Trevor Eve .Looking forward to the programme tonight.

Jane Report 23 Feb 2012 19:44

Just read back my last post.
I didn't mean "that's a cracker ' he has died.Just one of his catch phrases. It just sounded a bit insensitive.I know he wasn't everyone's cup of tea...but he did come out with some real crackers lolol

Hi everyone, what a lovely day it's been,

It was so nice Carmel actually asked me to take her for a drive this afternoon. We went via the back lanes as far as Kenilworth. A few days a go we couldn't put enough clothes on, today it was undo my collar and my coat.

Yes dear old Frank Carson has gone to the great playhouse in the sky. The last time we saw him he was behind us boarding the Ry*nAir plane from Dublin to Birmingham. I think he'd been over in Ireland playing golf. I was a bit nosey to see what he bought in the Duty Free!

The cake decoration is all done now, I'll take a photo and let those interested see it. I put my foot in it today. I suggested we go into Ik*a in the morning. Carmel said, that'll be good, I can get my 100 free tea light candles with the voucher they sent. Not thinking, I said think they'll come in handy to go on your birthday cake - oooops!!!!!

Should soon have photo/s of Baby Grace. She has colic at the moment. Would you believe they couldn't get any gripe water anywhere? We managed to get some for them in Kenilworth. What a good excuse to pop in and see her. She is still as beautiful as ever and today had her eyes wide open.

Talking of the horse and carts, my Dad was a brewery drayman(boy) when he left school, not sure what brewery but they lived in Southwark at the time. I don't think he liked it too much as he lied about his age and joined the army. When he got very old and had a touch of dementia, he would talk about the horses outside. He was in a care home in the middle of Barking, bless him.

It wasn't just the 'beer at home', do you remember they used to deliver 'pop' to your door too. I'm trying to think of the one that delivered around the Nuneaton area.

Anyway, I'm running a bit late tonight, so I'll catch you all tomorrow. loved your one about your computer on Facebook Pat. I'mm off to check my emails now, you can see I've got my priorities right, her first . . .

TTFN
Off to see if there's any of Frank's gems in my emails. I'm still think about shipwrecks surrounded by camels!!!

Jane Report 23 Feb 2012 20:44

David I was sweating because it was flipping warm lol.I tend not to get 'those' sweats so much these days (thank goodness),but they do crop up now and then.
We had the Knife Sharpening Man ,on a Tricycle with a box thingy with the sharpening wheel in.I remember Dad rushing out to get things done.Especially scissors.
On a Weekend I might have been sent out to the Ice Cream Van to get a block of Neapolitan .That would be for pudding with tinned fruit and a bit of Carnation.
Sometimes when Dad must have had a bit of spare money and the Ice Cream man came I would get a 99 (with the flake) .Mum always had the one with the 2 wafer biscuits on each side of the ice cream. Was that called a Wafer?

Tracey

Tracey Report 23 Feb 2012 21:29

JANE WE CALLED THAT TWO WAFER A SLIDER--WE ALSO HAD A ROUND LIGHT BISCUIT (LIKE A BABY RUSK) ICE CREAM WITH A SNOWBALL IN CENTER--YUMMY

Just came back from doing the weekly shopping tonight, SIL going to be late (I think)again tomorrow and on Saturday, cupboards and counter tops for porch are being delivered so we really don't have much time to do the shopping this weekend. actually it was very quiet tonight in Morr*sons.

Just as we went through the doors to go out to the car after shopping, OH say's to me keep walking, I will catch you up
and as I turn back there is this young couple walking very close behind us, when they see OH stop the young girl stops and turns to walk in the opposite direction and the boy stops and pretends to be looking in his shopping bag.
I carried on walking to the car and when OH gets to the car I said whats going on, OH say's I think that young lad was going to rob me,
we got into the car and as we drove out of the car park we passed the young couple both were staggering around, looked like they were both drunk or on drugs, :-| :-|, OH is beginning to know the signs when something funny is going on. probably because of his experence in Barcelona.

Well I'm away to get a drink and read the local newpaper,

I will say goodnight to everyone.

I can remember getting neopolitan wafers with the 3 colours too. They were wrapped in a sort of greaseproof and would be unwrapped and a wafer slapped on both sides.......mmmm running your tongue around the edge between the wafers....yum, yum. I can remember when staying at grans age about 5 getting milk lollies from the icecream man too.

I've just been looking at some 1880s newspapers for Essex (OH has ancestors there). There was an article dated 1889 about a christmas tree being put up in the village and being decorated with toys, sweetmeats and bonbons. OH said if they put all that on a tree around here they would all be gone the next day!

Jane

Jane Report 23 Feb 2012 22:01

Shirl ,I can understand them being called Sliders lol.Once they started to melt the ice ream would slide out between the two wafers .Trying to grab it quickly before it slid out was always a nightmare .
Ann,yes licking around all the sides .It then ended up with the lump of ice cream in the middle and nothing around the edges .Then I would squeeze the 2 wafers together to get the ice cream to come out to the sides again.Very often by that time the edges of the wafers were soggy .I think I preferred the good old cornet. It was far less messy :-D

Fiona .it sounds like you were lucky to escape being robbed.Good job your OH was on the ball.

Right that is me for the night .I am away to bed .
See you all in the morning xx

Sneeze Report 23 Feb 2012 22:31

Just read about the Neapolitan ice cream in the middle of two wafers. Lovely could just imagine it now. I think we all did the same lick the ice cream from around the edges of the wafer so you had a load in the middle and nothing around the edges and then squeeze so all the ice cream ran out the sides of the wafers. Yummy !!!

Have just watched Kidnap and Ransom the Trevor Eve programme I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Oh well off to bed now.

Morning All,

Dull again but still much warmer than it has been.

Dad always had a wafer but I did'nt like them. I much prefered a cone. Did'nt like chocolate either so never had a 99. dad did sometimes have an oyster which was like what Shirl was talking about. You can still buy those in Morrison's. I think it was probably a pearl inside the shell. The icecream I mean! and not known to me as a snowball.

We would also go to Southend On Sea sometmes and visit Rossi's Icecream parlour. They did all different flavours of icecream. Dad always had their choclate one and Strawberry for me.
