Afternoon one and all,

Taken me ages to read all the posts.

Denise, please feel free to say what you want on here, we all let of steam from time to time. I think I might be the worst. I had a stroke 8 years ago come March 26th. Which has left me with terrible temper/depression bouts, and I lead off like something rotton, but the "GIRLS" just give me their support, and all well again till next time.

Smells, I am a bit queer about those, I love the smell of horses stables, coal bunkers, fresh laid tar, chimney smoke from coal/wood fires. Babies flesh, that just bathed smell. and a good roast dinner.

Very strange sort of day here also, no movement with the trees, and the air seems very still.

I woke this morning, hardley able to swallow, and a raging headache, so it looks like it's on it's way back. !!!

Keep well all, see you later.

Or perhaps Frank that is the end of it!! I hope so for your sake. You don't want to go through that lot again!! :-) :-)

Well I have'nt done a thing this morning. so I think it is a bit of ironing and then lunch. O just looked at the time. Now I think it is lunch and then a bit of ironing.

Looking forward to Edwin Drood tonight and hope like Liz that it is better than Great Expectations. Did'nt like Miss Haversham in the last one....... not old enough.

Watched Silent Witness last night.

Pat I enjoyed the young Morse program too. It would make a good new serise (sp) Would'nt mind the young James Herriot as an on going thing either.

Afternoon All
Dull but dry. quiet here,
I was a the dentist myself this morning and knew she would find something as it's been a long time since my last visit,
my teeth are slowly disintergrating and all she can do is pack them , I have 15 teeth to be packed over the next few weeks, and I have to take extra care when cleaning them. she says if I don't get them sorted out I will finely have to have root treatment, also have a bit of an infection in my gums which should clear up if I change the way I clean my teeth.

SMELLS I LIKE
- Lily of The Val*y reminds me of my mum perfume,
Frank I also love the smell of a baby when it's just had a bath, Sofia's hair smells lovely when it's first washed.
Clean fresh sheets when they are first put on the bed, especially after I have used Lavender fabric conditioner.
The smell of leather,
The smell of a sweetie shop,

SMELLS I DON'T LIKE-
Yeast fermenting
fresh bread in supermarket
Beer.
Home made wine, used to hate it when mum and dad took up making wine at home , they kept the demi Johns in the little bathroom, the smell made me feel sick
Parmasan Cheese, smells like someones been sick
unfortunatly I get hay fever so I can't go into any place where they keep animals,
Long haired dogs make me sneeze, and my eyes swell up and I have difficulty breathing.
When OH cleans the kitchen he uses to much, Fl*sh
and Fair* Power Spray, splutter splutter!!!!! :-| :-|

I think Jane has painted an un-erasable picture in all our minds. If I were to take my wife a cup of tea in that state of undress, she'd probably say "You don't expect me to stir my tea with THAT, do you?" (Hope no ones offended).
It's funny how we can still be modest with our loved ones, but under tricky hospital situations, all modesty goes out the window with perfect strangers on the medical staff - I know, I've been that person!

Yes, Ann, we do go via Sharnford, I know it fairly well anyway. When I was on my own living in Coventry, I gave a chap who lived out there a bed for the night as he couldn't get back there due to the late hour. I was amazed when the next time he saw me, for my kindness he presented me with a Royal Doulton figure, which is probably fairly valuable now. A mutual pal told me his family were well off, Nice to know our little acts of kindness are appreciated.

I see the latest on the thread is smells, I guess I must have some but until this lousy cold lifts, I'd be grateful to smell anything. I think I remember the nice smells better than the nasty ones. Don't you think bad smells are a sort of warning. I remember one time I got violently sick drinking too much gin (no, I'm not an alchy, it was in my RAF days on a night out with the lads). Since then the very sniff of a gin bottle turns my stomach. Do you recall the days when the pubs had a cellar and the brewers truck would lower the barrels down. I could never stand the smell of stale beer waffting up.

Anyway, that's me off, gotta take my next antibiotic!

William

William Report 10 Jan 2012 15:24

It's me back again - antibiotic duly taken.

I didn't see Great Expectations but the thread reminded me of something, especially as I was watching a programme about Whitechapel and area of the 1880's. When I were a lad (there I go again with the bread advert!) and worked in London's East City (EC3 - Lloyds Avenue, off Fenchurch Street), I used to have to commute to Liverpool Street Station. I recall there was a pub opposite (who said, not booze again?) and it had been owned by someone who was 'crossed in love' on their wedding day. As I remember, it was still laid out for the wedding reception but hadn't changed, complete with cobwebs, stale cake - the lot - all sort of 'Miss Haversham-ish'. Am I right in thinking it was called Dirty Dick's? Anyone recall that?? I think my Dad took me in there once just for the experience.

I think I need another antibiotic after that - Frank, send me another joke quick....

William

William Report 10 Jan 2012 15:32

Back again to answer my own question, which some of you may find interesting. I looked up Diry Dicks on Wikipaedia and heres what it says - on the site there is a photo of it too.

Dirty Dick was Nathaniel (Dick) Bentley, an 18th century merchant who owned a hardware shop and warehouse in London, and is one of the people who is considered as a possible inspiration for Miss Havisham in Dickens' Great Expectations after he refused to wash following the death of his fiancée on his wedding day.
A pub in Bishopsgate, London at the beginning of the 19th century, changed its name from The Old Jerusalem to Dirty Dick's, and recreated the look of Bentley's warehouse shop.
The contents, including cobwebs and dead cats, were originally a part of the cellar bar, but have now been tidied a to a glass display case. Successive owners of the Bishopsgate Distillery and its tap capitalised on the legend. By the end of the 19th century, its owner, a public house company called William Barker's (D.D) Ltd, was producing commemorative booklets and promotional material to advertise the pub.
The pub was described in 1866 as having "cobwebs festoons dangling from the black rafters." It is now owned by Young's

Denise I just spotted your bit you added on to your last post.Well done you, getting to the National Championships. It just goes to show that you can achieve amazing things even after being diagnosed with something as devastating as PD.Hopefully it won't be too long before you are back in the saddle again.I think the RDA is brilliant. They used to use the stables across the road from me.It's nice to think you can share this with us.Thanks.
As Frank says if someone is feeling a bit down or angry or just in need of unloading, we are always here to lend an ear and give a bit of support ,shoulder to cry on or whatever.

Back to smells
All those wet gabardine macs or duffel coats hanging on the pegs in the school cloakroom .Didn't they whiff .The awful mop and bucket used to mop up nasty things on the classroom floors. That string mop always smelled like sick :-S :-S
A smell that I remember well from childhood Christmases are the scented bath cubes and bath oil things that would melt in the bath water. There always seemed to one bit of those that refused to dissolve and I would try and chase around the water to get it and squish it between my fingers.

Mandy .Your poor back sounds so sore.I hope you are being looked after well. :-D :-D.Frank have you be gassing too much with that sore throat.I hate it when I have a bad throat and tonsils .It feels like 2 golf balls.

Must do a bit of hoovering now I think BBL :-S :-S

Sheila Report 10 Jan 2012 16:13

Well I do get myself into some pickles. Today I was being very good and enjoying doing the garden and went in the house for a shower. I heard some noise and decided it was coming from the cupboard where the boiler is so I opened the bathroom door and saw a bottom sticking out which looked liked my hubbies so I slapped it really hard and dived back into the bathroom. I heard all this muttering in a strange language opened the door and there stood the italian electrician that did our lights my ho had let him in and he went up to check the light in the boiler cupboard which is also my airing cupboard .

The poor man looked at me like I had gone barmy or somthing he said why you slap me . I said I thought you were my husband sorry he said do I look like your husband I said well I could only see your bottom part he went down the stairs muttering and told my ho who he said had tried not to laugh but could not help it. I will not do that again in a hurry.

Denise how lovely being able to enjoy your riding and being rewarded for it . I think you are very brave having Parkinson disease and wish you the best of luck for the future. They say a problem shared is a problem halved
so feel free to tell me what you like or anyone else there are some nice caring people .

I loved the smell of puppies when first born and pear drop sweets and I hated the smell of school on Monday morning it had a clinical smell and when entering the infants school my tummy used to churn with nerves. My hair would stick out on both sides of my face curled with dinky metal curlers after being washed and suffering the things all night so was very tired. i hated the smell of pubs at the week end.
Beer smells make me feel sick if someone throws up in our shop.

Jane Michelle wants to go to Tunisia to investigate if Sirine is Mohsens daughter she cannot divorce Mohsen here for five years he can divorce her straight away but will not. My ho told Michelle not to go women have been murdered for marriage break down in Tunisia I found a report on the treatment of English women by Tunisian men but must add not all Tunisian men are the same. Many have done what Mohsens done to Shell took money , lied about family and lots more things. Michelle knew Mohsen for a long time I told you when a child and she said he was lovely he mixes with very bad people here in the city and we know that on a Sunday he was going out to the boot sales buying clothes and taking them home to Tunisia to sell at Nabule market. clothes are so expensive in Tunisia he would make a lot out of it. Michelle never saw a penny .

Serine may not be Mohsens I asked his brother Adel and he said no she was Nazeens daughter like Mohsen said Nazeen had one daughter who was ok but three children with cleft palets she wanted an abortion when expecting Sirene and Mohsen told her not to have one and he would pay for anything the child needed if she was deformed but Sirine is perfect in everyway and Mohsen had a taxi business until someone crashed it for him he got in english money 800 pound a week in the summer time. but it dropped off in wintertime. He lent his taxi to a man when not using it.
I hope he stays in Tunisia now .I cannot keep turning my effections on
and off all the while it hurts me.
I hate Great Expectations where Mrs Haversham gets burnt by the fire after keeping her wedding gown on and her wedding feast in the room all those years poor Pip ,Estella gave him a rottom time .
I remember when very young watching Great Expectations when the convict jumps out at Pip and makes him get vitals from his home and take them to him. It frightened me to death and still wince when I watch that film. He was in the grave yard. My hubby was a very funny man when young he used to take me to the graveyard to kiss and cuddle. I thought of that film and would be stretched over someones grave with him on top of me kissing me passionately thinking oh god let me get out of this place wish he would hurry up and stop kissing me.
Once my hos friend came with us he did not like me and he would jump out from behind a grave stone making horrible ghostly noises.

Jane fancy Chris being naked with a mug of tea . Gosh my old man would not do that not that I would want to see him and his saggy bits perhaps Chris is toned nicely. I once bumped into him coming out the shower doing a flit across the landing and that was enough.

Having had a heart attack and a cancer scare I feel lucky to be alive .
It is lovely here in Brum today warm and sunny .

I was reading about people going to the doctors and the doctor making sour comments. My horror is a nurse who since I fell over twice and shes been in the reception comments to me Hello trouble are you still standing on your feet. I feel like saying yes you silly old moo. I fell twice so what is her problem does she think I drink our shop contents or something. People around give me a funny look.

I once went to the doctors and said I have a bad head doctor and it will not go I was really feeling ill and the doctor looked at me and said what will not go your head or the headache. I had not seen this doctor before was so upset I did not go back to him again.

My Berillll friend phoned and said Oh did I suffer thought Donnie knew I had false teeth. i said do you not take them out at night and she said no I said it is a wonder you do not choke on them. Beryl did not answer that one. Donnie slept on a blown up bed. I wonder why!!!! I am afraid I find it all a bit strange that relationship. i phoned my friend Annie but shes gone off to South Africa to help save tigers or something.

Well duty calls must go and pick up April shes got a french exam today we had all the parlous vou Englaise yesterday ,la fenetra and fermez la booch. do you speak english ,the window and shut your mouth see I am learning. Gosh what will I do when I loose my family to the States. Ryan said when I was having a bad day and crying my eyes up all over Mohens coat he had left said Dont cry mumsie you have me to look after you now
and that started me off more. I said you are going also and there I was sobbing like a nut case. Michelle sometimes joins in but being a solicitor does have lots of cases of worse things she reads and is going to Bedford on my birthday to a luncheon and degree honours because she paid for a course and passed it. some degree to help her career. Work is the best answer . oh Anne my job was making paper spills for my uncle to light his fire and his pipe .

His name or nick name was Dirty Dick.
Legend has it he could cure things doctors had given up on.

Shirl I love the smell of Detto*.I always have a bottle of it in the cupboard.

Jane, I doubt if you'll have to worry about dead cats skeletons, I reckon todays Health & Safety mania will prohibit live cats let alone dead cats LOL. Hope you enjoy your day in London.
You know, though I was born in the East End and worked in the East City as a young man, there were so many things in London that I didn't get the chance to enjoy. So, a few years ago, when my wife spent nearly 3 weeks in the National Neuro Hospital in St Anne's Square (near Russel Square tube) and I was staying nearby, I made up for lost time. I had several visits to the British Museum because it was nearest to the hospital. I went to the London Transport Museum at Covent Garden. I took the bus to where my Mums folks came from, Bethnal Green, and had a lovely morning in the Museum of Childhood (part of the V & A). My son also got me a pass for the Natural History Museum and I had a great time there too. Then there was a long mornings walk down via the embankment to see them erecting the London Eye and back up via Aldwych and the London theatres.
I know there are a lot of interesting things to do in nearby Coventry but a lot of the locals have never seen them because they take them for granted. There are times when it's an advantage to be a 'tourist/visitor'.

Evening in Paris,Denise. My Mums perfume .In a tiny bottle that used to be on her dressing table.I remember once my sister (when we fought like cat and dog) threw some of it in my eyes :-S :-SI have never let her forget that lol.
I remember the Ponds Cream too and also Nivea in a thin round blue tin.I still love the smell of that.It is wonderful.
Not so nice smells from childhood would be school dinners.Every day seemed to smell the same and it always lingered in the School Hall. The pong of the warm milk and the taste of drinking it through those dreadful waxy straws that would collapse at the top so you had trouble sucking. It was always great though being chosen as Milk Monitor.
I'm on a roll now........A lovely Pasty from IVOR DEWDNEY Gosh I really miss a proper Cornish Pasty.Mum would never let us eat in the street....too common :-S.But there was nothing nicer than having a hot pasty straight from the shop and eating it from the paper bag.My mouth is watering now just thinking about it.
Mums baking on a Sunday afternoon.Scones and cakes. The smell was delicious. It would be Strawberry Jam and Clotted Cream on the scones.
Just off to check dinner.

Evening all.

You have all been busy with your threads which I will have to read later.

Had an xray taken at the dentist..She needed to check with another person about the medication Im on. I have . osteoporosis and she is worried the tooth is going to break when pulled..I now have another appointment to go to another clinic attached to them to have it out in 2 weeks time..I have been given antibiotics as it is playing up now..
The xray showed its root is lodged at a funny angle against a wisdom tooth that has never come though ...

Work......the person who handed her notice in called in sick today..I also went and checked about my contract which now has to be renewed by april because of my age..I was told I will be given the oppotunity sp to take on another yearly one..So I said do I still have to give amonths notice if I dont..Yes she said so I said that will have to be given in by the end of feb ....she said if you decide you dont want to carry on,,,and we were both trying not to laugh...They just cant get the staff.....agency workers wont touch it as the job is only for an hour 10 mins lol..
