Don't seem to be getting your e.mails Shirl. Glad you had a good time out with the family, your son and I are in good company, Prince Charles birthday too.

We called the end of the bread the crust. and like Frank me and my brother always wanted the crust but being the lovely brother he is, I always got it. Spoilt little madam :-D

That's another one Jane, like leafs and leaves, I'm never sure when to use spoiled and spoilt.

I loved malt. It was in an enormous brown glass jar and mum would give us a spoonful every Friday evening.

Have I missed a post, are you trying to give up smoking Mel. Is that what the electric ciggies are for, wouldn't mind a vanilla one. I always bought a 200 pack of cigarettes from the supermarket and decided, like Frank, out of the blue to stop, I hadn't even opened the pack, but they stayed in the cupboard for about 6 months, just in case, I gave them away in the end, that was 20 odd years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done.

Fiona, when you can stand something on your waist you might find soft track suit trousers are best. Meanwhile under your housecoat why not get some knee length socks, they would keep your legs warm.

When I was aged about 4, a lot of wool coats for little girls had velvet collars and black patent bar shoes were very popular too. I remember going to school in little pinafore dresses that adjusted with buttons on the shoulder. They were bought too big so the hem could be turned up to let down as I grew and then the buttons on the shoulders would be moved to make them last longer too. Underneath would be a liberty bodice, a home knit jumper and often I had a home knit cardie on top too. Schools and houses weren't heated as much as they are now and you needed those layers. Much healthier though I think. We wore knee socks with the top edge turned down over a band of elastic and they were always falling down or 'going to bed' as mum would say. Home knit bonnets with pom poms and home knit scarves and mittens too to use up oddments of wool. The wool shops must have done a roaring trade!! Little boys wore short trousers all year, often in a scratchy wool material and they would get shorter as they grew out of them so their knees would get chapped with the cold in winter. They all seemed to wear home knit 'pullies' and caps too which provoked a lot of snatching them off and throwing them to each other . Most young boys I remember had the severe 'short back and sides' their dad's had in the Forces and they wore the Bry*cream same as their dads too. Mothers seemed obsessed that no wisp of hair should be sticking up and would plaster it down with a bit of spit (yuk!) and sharp kerbigrips. How painful were they when they lost the protective blobs of glue stuff off the ends of the grip. I used to bite them off too. We all had hair partings, one side for girls, the other for boys and would fidget while our mums would spend for ever with a sharp toothed comb raking our scalps over and over to get that parting dead straight!!

Here I am and still have'nt had a ciggy.....arn't I good? :-D

Went and picked up the girls this afternoon. Came back withthem and opened up the chicken crate and they all just sat there in the crate!!!! I had to get them all out and pop them on the top of it before they would move. Then I cleaned out the nest boxes whilst looking to see who was pecking who and haveing to break a couple of fights up. They were sparring for the pecking order!! Anyway the new ones were in a barn when I got to Val's farm. Saw the new baby, Henry and month old today. Grandson of Val. He was fast asleep laying on gt grans lap in front of the aga. GT gran used to be our neighbour but she now lives with her only daughter, Val, and her eldest now has Margarets bungalow next door to us. Well up away out the front.

When it came to shuting the girls away there were still some out that had'nt gone in the house. I caught them up one by one and popped them in and the last three I popped in the nest boxes as they are easier to open than the pop hole which slides up.

Ann I have heard of a Noggin as the end of the bread too.

Well done Mel.....try and do it again tomorrow!

I got some funny looks today when OH and I were out and called in somewhere for a coffee. I took my coat off and people kept looking across. Then I realised what it was! I have to wear the accelerometer again for a week after my hospital visit and I had it on under my black tee shirt to the right side of my waist. It flashes a red light every few seconds and I hadn't realised it showed through the tee shirt!! I said to OH it must look like my kidney is glowing!!

I remember Mum pressing a wave into my hair ,once the dreaded parting had been done :-S.Then that hair grip that nearly took your scalp off as it was pushed in.Yes they did have gluey bobbly bits on the end didn't they.I just had a look upstairs as there are a couple of grips (from Hannah) no bobble bits on them.
The garters always made your legs itch when they were a bit too tight. It felt so good to have a good scratch when you took them off.Left deep grooves too.I'm surprised the circulation was never cut off lol

I have been busy today doing this ,that and the other .Market Harborough this morning ,garden stuff this afternoon.

Maureen ,it sounds like you had good meal and fun for your Birthday .
Sorry I missed your Post Shirl saying it was your Son's birthday too.Belated wishes to him.

Mel good girl ditching those skinny ciggies for your new ones. When I was at Marks wedding in July I saw 2 people with those that you have.

Fiona ,if you are comfy at home in your Jim jams and aren't planning on going out ,I would stay in them.I doubt you will be feeling sore for much longer now. Also I will quite happily give you some of my fat to help you put on a bit of weight :-D :-D.I have plenty to give :-S :-S

I do seem to have missed a lot of posts these last couple of days..Hope I haven't missed anything important.I have been trying to spend a little less time on here .Not because I want to you understand but there are so many things I need to get done around here.
Tonight for dinner I have bunged everything all together in one big baking tin.I hope it works ok.it is Chicken breasts wrapped in Pancetta,Red Onions quartered ,courgettes and Red and Yellow Peppers, and Charlotte potatoes (halved). All coated in Olive Oil.
I had better go and check on it now.

Ann,one of my fillings was upper right of centre.
It replaced an old amalgam between two teeth.
She put a white one in.You wouldn't know it was there.
The second ond one was upper right at the back.
It's a temporary one.The tooths getting pulled (extracted) in two weeks.
It's been a nuisance for a long while.

David.I bet you will be doing big smiles now with your new invisible filling.Good luck when you have the back one out.I am just so relieved that the one I had crowned again is all hunky Dory now, after all those months of trouble.

Jane, that is nearly the same as a meal I often do (when I do cook!) and all in the one dish too! Do you add tomatoes at times and a bit of Basil. However you do it it is always very tasty!! We love it....

Off to watch some recordings now so will see you all tomorrow

Jane

Jane Report 15 Nov 2011 18:48

Mum had some things like bulldog clips to squeeze a wave in your hair. They had spiked bits that meshed into each other through your hair. I remember trying them out on my fingers....ouch!! It seemed then that hair had to be anything but natural, had to be tamed!!! Those awful rags I had in my hair every night to get ringlets.....it was like sleeping on a pile of golf balls, so uncomfortable. :-S Mum never changed her permed hairstyle until her late 30s and dad never did change his hairstyle and was very reluctant to give up the Br*lcream.

David I have had a couple of teeth that were a problem on and off for a long time. I didn't want to lose them, but life was so much better after they were pulled out!! You won't miss it I'm sure. Is the kitchen looking good now with the new floor?

Jane

Jane Report 15 Nov 2011 20:48

I never had Bulldog clips Ann or Rags.Just Mums hands pressing my hair into a wave. Just like crimping a Pasty lol.
Dinner was very nice but I as a bit too late bunging the Basil in.Not enough time for the flavour to come out.
I don't think I ever heard of Basil ,or Oregano or any type of herbs when I was young. It was just Salt and Pepper lol

Hello all and our new folk, I'm in Australia so don't understand half of what is talked about on here with regard to childhood memories and brand names mentioned, but it's all interesting.

Ann you did get the run-around at that hospital. A few signs would have saved some stress. Did you ask me about the budgies? We get wild ones in the bush, but a lot of the pet birds and parrots are escaping from their homes and once they mix with the wild birds they teach them to talk. So you have all these birds chattering away in the trees saying "who's a pretty boy then".

Fiona I am always in my pj's as I can't stand anything around my tummy. I've even been down to the doctor's and to have a coffee in them. Whatever feels comfortable whilst you get over all this. Easier to rest as well and maybe soft trackies as someone suggested when the tenderness lessens.

It's possible my cat got an infection from a fight, but she is inside most of the time. Now the other one is unwell and dropping clumps of fur everywhere. She will need to see the vet too :-S Next door's cat and the one from across the road had a right old barney at our front door last night. I don't know why they can't have their squabbles on their own patch.

Our neighbour used to put my hair in rags when I was little. She did my hair every morning for school, as my mother pulled too much and made me squeal, so I always went next door to Joyce. I remember the bobby pins crossed over to make kiss curls.

Mel I wish you well with giving up ciggies. My dad went cold turkey one day after being told he had lung damage. We had three smokers in the house and I used to have terrible bronchitis as a child. It was good when the boys moved out, but dad didn't give up until 1983. Good luck to you. Hope your new girls are settling in.

Shirl a belated happy birthday to your son for the 14th.

Maureen glad the card got there and you didn't open it, ;-) the way Greece's finances are, you be better to find a weathly sheikh (sp) who owns race horses and oil fields. Sounds like you had a lovely meal with your family.

I must have been a constipated child too Jane, not enough water because they used to dose me up with Laxsettes, those little chocolate squares. Oh the pains in the tummy were awful :-S Did you have those in the UK?

Time for a cuppa, have a good day everyone. 3.31 pm DST

Morning Kim and All

Misty moisty this morning and dull with it.The girls are out as oh didi it for me when he went to the garage. I can only see 15 from my bedroom window so I hope the others are laying me some eggs. It will be good to have gate sales again as I have been hanging on to my few for us as they were like gold dust!

Ann those things that put waves in the hair were called crimpers and mum still had a couple of sets of them in her hairdressing gear. Remember those metal curlers that you wound the hair round and then closed a metal bit over the curled hair and clipped a bit on the end. My nan used to have those when I was small. She used to lok funny with them in as she had very sparse fine hair. Dad had fine hair too and so have I but I used to have a lot of it. I think it is begining to thin now as it is so long and it breaks off each day I comb it. I have to take loads out of the comb in the morning.

Off to see what the girls have laid if anything. They may go off lay for a few days with all the upset of being in a car boot for 10 mins and a bit of a bumpy ride :-(
