Hello all,

Quaills for dinner today! Blink and you miss 'em! Still, nice for a change eh?

Going back to the name thing, Lily came up with someone who went by the name of Wayne Kerr. Well, there was a young guy worked in our office who thought he was God's gift to the fair sex. I was told that when he went out on the town (the 'pull' I think they say now) he used to go by the name Wayne Collett - not sure if he thought that one through? The one that always amuses me is the singer/actress, Minnie Driver...

I've been off in my Time Machine again today. How about some of these. Does anyone recall Quix washing up liquid? Then there was Izal disinfectant, both cost one shilling a bottle - has anyone noticed that you now pay VAT on disinfectant?
Also, for washing day was the Acme wringer, I think you could attach it to your sink. There was Cidal soap for your complexion, or more mundane jobs got Hudson's soap.
Mr Therm cooked our meals, kept us warm - in those days energy providers didn't tout at your door for business!
A nice floor covering could be achieved by using Congoleum squares.
A special treat was Clarnico Regency Candies, in a pretty striped box with a cameo on the lid - the box lined and each candy in it's own individual 'cup'. Back to my sherbet fountains - they were made by Barrett's, and could be found with the black-jacks and dolly mixtures, and Barrett's sweet cigarettes. You could also get a 'penny pipe' , the stem was a bit of Spanish liquorice with a thick bowl and 'filled' with red stuff like mini allsorts. How un-P C in these days!
The rag and bone man - if Mum gave him something to take away, I'd get a windmill. I don't know anyone who ever gave him 'bones'? Any horse and cart in the road was carefully watched for a 'delivery' of dung, when a bucket & shovel swiftly appeared and the steaming 'manure' was whisked away to the garden.
Ladies, Maureen mentioned Amami, you could get the Quick Setting Amami Wave set. The Toni 'Home Perm' came with SPIN curlers. Men had Brylcreem, ladies had Brylfoam cream shampoo.
School - before the days of biros - ink wells in the desks had to be refilled by the 'ink monitor' from a big stone bottle of Stephen's Ink, kept in the cupboard with the books and things. There was always a smell of chalk in the classroom and an agressive teacher would often throw a wood and felt 'board rubber' at any pupil who kept talking in class. But, on the plus side, when Songs of Praise is on TV, I still recall all the songs we sang in the hall at assembly.

We were going to start the Xmas decs this morning, but only got as far as getting the cards ready for the post in the morning. We got a shock yesterday when it cost us £6 for 12 2nd class stamps in the Post Office. I could buy a box of cards for that in January!!!

Does anyone have access to actual death certificates? I'm a bit surprised to learn that my paternal grandfather and grandmother both died in the same quarter in 1937.
He was Richard Roe b Oct qtr 1861 in Hackney
died 1st quarter 1937 at Lambeth - Vol 1d - 256

She was Mary Naomi nee Teedon) b Aprl qtr 1863 in Shoreditch
died 1st quarter 1937 Lambeth - Vol 1d - 226

Be interesting to know just how close their last days were.

Afternoon All,

Mandy I bet your kitchen smells lovely with your Christmas cake baking......I miss that! I haven't baked one for ages as we never seem to fancy a heavy fruit cake with all the other things there are to eat at Christmas. OH loves it though, so I might make one after Christmas ready for his birthday in March!! lol.

William, I didn't know some of those things! I usually had the sweet cigarettes in my Christmas stocking though.......used the tips as lipstick! Our Rag and Bone man used to give goldfish. :-D

I may be wrong but I don't think you can see death certs on line, you would have to buy them to see the dates of death. I have sent you an email William.

Liz, it must have been warmer where you are today, it's been perishing here today and some of the frost never melted. Crickley Hall again tonight.........will we see the dog again I wonder?

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 2 Dec 2012 17:43

It's the last Crickley tonight. Boo hoo......

William I member those pipes with the pink seedy bits on the top. they still sell sweet cigarets but they arn't called that anymore and don't have the pink bit on the end that Ann used as lipstick. You used to be able to get a smoking set in Chocolate. There would be matches and ciggies and a pipe and a cigar with silver paper round it.

I think you could have a chioce out of the liquorice box of strips of elastice, a catherine wheel, pipe, bar with something writen on the squashed end a twist, a boot lace asnd I think a watch which had one of those liquorice allsort stuck in the middle with all the seedy bits on it in either pink or blue. Can't think what lese there was in the box. Mum loved liquorice of any kind when I was young and she would get a selection and I could have which one I wanted.

You have to buy death certs to see who registered the death and the cause.

What year was the flu epidemic in London. My grandad lost his mother and a sister in that.

Brrrrrr! It's blooming chilly again now.
Any one got a spare mangle??.I think I have found somewhere that will do laundry (wash and dry) so will give a ring tomorrow. And they collect and deliver. :-D

William ,I'm sure someone will be able to tell you how to go about getting/finding death certificates.I'm no help I'm afraid :-S
I have never eaten Quail. They look so tiny and bony.Do they taste gamey or chickeny?

I actually got a couple of Xmas Pressies this afternoon :-D.A lovely perfume for Hannah and a Jacket for James.(I think you call it a Pea Jacket)..Didn't someone mention them the other week?.I also bought a nice fleecy blanket for poor old Chester.I am getting quite concerned about his weight loss now ,but am dreading having to go to the Vet.I feel quite sick just at the thought :-S.I just have a horrible feeling that something is very wrong.

Frank my friend and the other Lady who saw that little dog dumped didn't get chance to get the number plate as they drove off too fast. But my friend did ring the Police.Sadly it is the time of year when these things tend to happen more.I just cannot understand why these people who for whatever reason don't want or can't keep their pets just don't take them to an animal shelter or a Vet.They don't even have to say that they belong to them.I will say no more ,otherwise It will keep playing on my mind.

The Beef Casserole is smelling do good ...my tummy is rumbling.

Fitz reminded me the other day how 'change' used to be counted out back into your hand...Nowadays it is just plonked there and you have to check it yourself.

Our Verandah gets all the sun up to middle day, and with the overhang it is well sheltered. I sat with a jacket on for a while and the sun was pretty warm, thawing the heavy frost we'd had; it did cloud up at lunch time, and I think tomorrow it'll rain!! Watching a prog about Titanic at the moment, this chap has studied the tragedy for years, and it's amazing what new evidence he has discovered - fascinating stuff.

Ooh the Liquorish Catherine Wheel was my favourite from that box Mel.The Pipe too although that was quite a chewy bit of Liquorish.
I'm glad I don't have to go anywhere tonight. It is all warm and cosy here with the fire blazing away.James is home now from visiting Jess .He has just 2 more weeks of work and then Redundency :-S :-SJust before Christmas too :-(

I keep going into the garage as I can here a machine.I keep thinking it is the Tumble Drier......but of course it can't be...It is the dehumidifier and fan :-S :-S :-S :-S

Yes the cake did smell good while it was cooking ,i just don't have the christmasy feeling yet, i suppose its still a bit early , hubby asked when we were getting the christmas tree down from the loft but i think we'll do that next week end ,although we should be taking the little ones to see Santa next week end too and it depends on the weather which day we go because we'll be going to the Dinosaur Park again and we need it to be a nice dry day to do that .

Oh i remember using the red tip on the end of the sweet cigarettes as lip stick, and i used the red ones from the Liquorice Torpedos too :-D

The Pork was nice ,although i only had a tiny piece ,i liked all the veg and the roasties best , and i've just had a mince pie with a little cream ,so i suppose that's a bit christmasy .

I think i might have the start of a cold !! my throat feels like i have a pea skin stuck in it !! :-S

Jane

Jane Report 2 Dec 2012 18:57

Now those torpedoes ...another of my favourites :-D :-D and yes rubbing the red ones on my lips for lipstick.I will buy some next time I see them :-D
Ooh Mandy does that feel like that 'skin' is stuck on your tonsils and you keep wanting to do the 'Hoik Hoik' thing where you try and clear it???.Touch wood we have been clear here of colds and throats, but I have seen many folk sniffling and coughing .There was one chap behind me at the till today who was spluttering(without his hand in front of his mouth :-S) I just held my breath and made sure I was facing away from him.
I just hope you don't get your Chesty thing again Mandy. When was it you got carted off to hospital?? Was that 2 years ago?

MillymollyAmanda

Oh Frank.Deep Breath again for both of you I think. You can't be moving out into a one bed place. Are the pair of you just a bit too feisty? and needs one to back down? You have been there before and it all calms down.Just a bit of space for some time always helps. You know where I am and my number <3 <3

William

William Report 2 Dec 2012 19:40

Jane, the quail was nice, a bit chickeny but a slightly toughy texture. True, a lot of bones, definitely a 'finger licking job'. We did them in a casserole with a sauce and a couple of sausages added. Then, we had veg, roast spuds and Yorkshire puddings. It was very nice for a change - finished off with individual trifles.
Got 4 quails from A*di for just undr a fiver, so 2 birds between us today and two we'll have tomorrow.

Sorry to hear about Frank's troubles, I hope it all blows over. I shall be worrying about him all the time now
