Ann it does feel nice. The only thing is i didn't have it dried fully so it is a bit flicky in some parts if you know what I mean.It hopefully will settle after sleeping on it tonight. If not i will just have to wet it down and dry it again in the morning. It feels all silky.I just love having it washed and having my head massaged .So relaxing :-D.My sister hates having hers done.
She is coming to stay on Sunday now ,not Saturday.I was thinking if we want to go to town Monday/Tuesday we will have to catch the bus!!!!!.So I have just found the timetable on the computer. That will be a treat for both of us lolol.

This morning when I woke.I could hear a lot of cows mooing .They sounded agitated :-S and so close. Then I discovered that they have been moved down to the field at the beginning of the lane opposite as there are diggers ,digging trenches in the top field. This has been happening in several fields around here lately.I don't know why and am not sure how to find out.

Good thing that Paedophile has been jailed Ann.Was he one on his own or part of a ring?I wonder what will happen to that teacher who has disappeared with his school girl ? I heard his Father on the radio appealing for him to get in touch.

Oh My!I have just seen something run up the tree trunk just outside the patio window. It was either a mouse or a rat!!!!! .I hope it wasn't a rat :-S :-S.It definitely wasn't a bird.

Oh dear
I seem to have dropped in on the coffee morning, excuse me. I was expecting someone to tickle my memory with tales of malt extract and things like that. Anyway as i'm here. Apart from sherbet in paper twists at a farthing, and playing on bombed buildings in North London. My mum didnt know i suppose or she would have gone mental. I recall from some deep distant memory, walking down my nanna's garden path, which seemed miles long, it was the front garden, there was only a yard at the back. The reason fro the walk was to get the milk. The milk was ladled out of a churn into a jug which i held, from the back of the milk mans cart, he had a horse at the front end. His name was Meyrick, this must have been around 1949ish in South Wales and i remember also the straw and grass that came free of charge with the milk.
Sorry about that, but as i was here i thought id share
Enjoy
David ;-)

David stick with us :-D.We run short of childhood memories as the thread has been going for so long now.So we need people like you to jog the grey matter.
I do remember seeing the Milk Churns at the end of the farm lane waiting to be collected, but this would have been in the 60's .
We have done the Virol to death lol and the Cod Liver Oil .I hated that Virol .Dished out on a big Tablespoon..Yuk Yuk!

Lol. Yes David stick with us.........the more memories you post, the less time for coffee!!! :-D

Up to the age of 8/9 in the 1950s all of our (untreated) milk was collected from the farm over the road from us. Usually mum would fetch it in a big jug, too heavy for me to carry. When there was a newborn calf, mum would make egg custard from the rich milk or beaslings I think she called it. They kept a bull too, but he was kept in a stall, chained by a ring in his nose. I was scared of him and kept well away. The first milk I saw in bottles, other than the small school milk bottles, was when we moved to leicestershire. Then the test for 'gone off' milk was the smell, same with meat!! I hardly ever had sweets, except at christmas, usually Da*ry Box, until about the age of 12, then most of what I had was bought with my pocket money, so it might be a toss up between a banana toffee bar or the plastic horse I wanted.

When I got home from school, my first job was to put on my old play clothes so I didn't spoil my good clothes. Then there were your best clothes, in which you were watched like a hawk in case you scuffed shoes or got marks like grass stains on them. Mum only took me to school for a couple of days, after that I was expected to catch the bus, then when I moved to primary school I would do the half hour walk on my own partly along a public footpath across fields, come rain or shine or snow and in the dark in winter too. When I got my 2 wheeler bike for my 7th birthday I felt so grown up, pedalling to school on my bike (well after I learned to ride it that is!). I loved the tic, tic as you free wheeled down the hill and how quick I could get to school and home too! There was hardly any traffic on the country lanes then and lungfuls of bracken and pine smell instead of fumes.

Been doing a bit of family research for a change today, found some interesting things (names) and something I clearly missed before.
Anyway, Ann, I think that is a really brilliant idea of yours to record voices, maybe telling some family tale or the other. Not sure how long recorded tapes last, maybe best to record to DVD via computer I guess.

I was relating to someone by email today about my late brother. It was to do with when my step-granddad passed away in 1952. We lived in Chadwell Heath Essex and he lived in Plaistow East London, some good 10-12 miles away (Frank will know). My brother was tinkering away in my Dad's workshed at the bottom of the garden. Mum & I were in the kitchen when he came up and said that he had thought 'blind granddad Charley' was standing behind him. Of course when he turned round no one was there, but the feeling was so strong. It was after that we received news that Granddad had died. It was the same when I was 29, living in Nuneaton and my brother in Hornchurch Essex. I became very ill, and if he hadn't followed his sixth sense and drove all the way up, I would have surely died without his swift action when he arrived. I've always been grateful for that and his birthday will be here soon and I shall thank him, even though he's not around anymore.

William Report 27 Sep 2012 20:16

Tracey has just reminded me of the old scrubbing boards for laundering your clothes, shirts, pants whatever. My Mum had a glass one, with all the 'bumps' down it (was that high tech then?) and I loved the sound of the soap thrumming up and down the washboard. Mum & Dad only had a small 'kitchenette' so a washing machine was out of the question. After my Mum died, Dad would still do his 'smalls' on that wshboard and it was probably there when the house was cleared. I wonder whatever happened to it ?

I think that the terraced house we lived in must have had a wash-boiler in it when built. There was a 'lump' on the upper rear kitchen wall. If you went outside, there was a chimney up above it so it must have all been blocked off before we moved into it in 1940. We rented it (or at least Dad did) until the owner sold it to Dad as a sitting tenant. I have the old rent book for it here, amazing what was paid in rent by todays standards. It even has details of the two lots of bomb damage that were repaired from doodle bug and V2 rocket damage.

We have just had a lovely shepherds pie with cabbage and now I am stuffed.

Mel Fairy Godmother Report 27 Sep 2012 21:32

My mum had a glass washboard too. Reeded glass and grandad would sometimes play it with his fingernails rapping them up and down and rpound and round.

Our mangle was out in the shed with the big oval galvanised bath under it. This is the same bath that I used as a paddling pool on hot summer days when mum would put it on the lawn and half fill it for me to play in.

I also had a childrens size washboard just the same as mums. We had one gas point in the kitchen under the butlers sink which had a wooden draining board. This gas point was connected to a big gas ring which would go underneath the green boiler when the sheets were boiled up. The steam would fill the kitchen and it was always cold meat and mash and peas for dinner on that Monday night.

The only Liselotte I've heard of Jane, was Elisabeth Charlotte, (Liselotte was a combination of her two names) born in Heidleburg in May 1652, who was married to Louis 1Vth's younger brother Phillippe, after the death of his first wife Minette, who was the youngest sister of Charles 11. Liselotte and Monsieur founded the modern house of Orleans!!
Raining her today, Ian wanted to get on the roof to fix the cowl on the chimney,it'll have to wait till tomorrow! Rotavator being delivered this evening, so we can start our veg patch in earnest!!

Morning all,evening Kim.

Not much better this morning. Frightened to pass wind !!!!

Was in bed by 10.00 pm last night. Didn't read or listen to the radio. Slept like a log till 5.00 am. Had to get up for loo. Dozed for a couple of hours, but have been back and forth to my fried since. I have only had one cup of tea, and no breakfast.

Wednesday evering I did a Roast Chicked. When I got the stuffing from the cupboard, I found it was Aunt Bess# and not PAX#. Why Ros bought it I don't know.
Anyway. unbeknown to me, she didn't like the taste of it so didn't eat any. I just tucked in as usual, and cleared the lot. During Wednesday evening/night thats all I could taste. So I'm putting my upset tummy down to that. The rest of the "NEW" packet is in the bin !!!

We had rain a bit earlier, but now the sun is trying to break through. Quite a strong wind, so that might blow the rain away.

Got to read a lot of old memories. The kids of today wouldn't know how to cope with the things we and our parents took for granted.

I may have mentioned this before (OLD AGE) My brother and I were all dress up in our Sunday best "Lumber Jacket suit" and went for a walk. A bomb had dropped the night before up the road, so we went searching for scrapnel. The crater was very deep, and quite a lot of water had filled the hole. The soiul was full of clay, As we ventured down into the depths,we gor more and more clay and water on our new cloths. We did find a Stainless Steel cone from the bomb. So went home as proud as peacocks. NOT SO. When we knocked on the door with our bounty, all HELL was let loose. We were stripped off, and scrubbed down in the back garden, The suits were ruined, and as everything was on ration, (apart from a good hiding,) it didn't go down well with Mum. The replacement suits finally came after saving the
cupeons. They were far to big for us, with the coat sleves tucked up and a belt round the trousers. Mum sait "YOU WILL GROW INTO IT" when we did the cuffs were a different colour to the rest of the suit.

All the furniture of that time was "UTILITY" and again all rationed. I remember we had a rexine sofa and two chairs , You slid off them as they were so shiney, and smooth.

I use to like my hair being washed at the hairdressers Jane. There is something about the way they massage your scalp. Hope you have a nice few days with your sister.

Yes William, I knew Plastow quite well, I had relations living around there. Also East and West Ham. Millwall, Charlton. My Aunt had a stall on the Market at Green Lane. East ham, that I would visit with my Mum.

Going to get a piece of toast and a glass of milk.

Carelessness, disobedience lying and rudeness were arch-sins when I was a child! I can remember losing my wrist watch along the river bank (why did I take it off?!) and being sent straight back to look for it, and not to come home till I had found it! - luckily I did!! I can remember asking if I could bath our dog, and being told that I couldn't, I did anyway thinking that she would dry quickly (!) and no one would find out - she didn't, and they did!!! I was camping in the garden and she rolled, first on the gravel, then the flower bed (!) and then on the sheets in my tent!!! BIG, BIG trouble!!!! ruined flowers, ruined sheets and ruined me!I had to use those sheets for years, they even went sides to middle! (at school, no question of new ones!) stains and all, in the interests of a lesson learned! :-0
