.The valve insides sticking in the wrong place.
Get a new valve fitted in the cistern or have it looked at by a competent plumber.
In the mean time to stop it mis-behaving remove the cistern lid and raise the valves arm and tie it in the raised position.
This tells the valve the cistern is full.

You cannot have a flood as near the top of the cistern you should see an over flow pipe from the cistern, usually goes through the wall and over flows sarely in the drain.

Annx Report 21 Aug 2012 19:19

Yes, I love green and mauve too Mel!

Thanks for that Frank/David. The first problem is the toilet flushes with a button that is in the top of the cistern lid, so that would have to come out before the cistern lid could come off. I remember years ago using that trick of tying the ballcock? up. (bet somebody sniggered!). Then we had a toilet that had a polythene bag thing in the cistern instead and it split and we had to have a new valve and bag assembly. I've used the flush since and it was better this time so something is sticking at times. I think I will do a bit of googling and go to a plumbers for advice. Thinking about it I'm pretty sure there is a valve to turn the water off to it under some panelling so I could always do that if it gets so it won't stop.

Rumbles of thunder have started here now!!

They sorted OH's car out by taking the offending plastic cover off!! They said a new one would be £170, but it wasn't really necessary to have it. They are put on to help channel the air to cool the engine in very hot countries. Not bad service really as I'm sure a dealership would have just fitted a new one!! The garage didn't charge OH a penny!! :-D

Frank

Frank Report 21 Aug 2012 20:45

Ann, I forgot to tell you that that bit of plastic doesn't do anything, but my old brain only seems to work when it likes :-| :-| :-| As for the cistern. I would think if you have a stop cock, turn it on and off as you need to use the loo. Till you can get the washer fitted. Do you know a good DIY person, as it's not a big job. and some of these plumbers want £50.00 call out charge. !!!! So be carefull.

#was sitting in the conservatory just now watching football, and we had a shower that lasted all of 30 seconds. Looks like there is more up there, and it's turned a .lot cooler. will be able to sleep in bed tonight.

Jane, I haven't grown chillies as Ros can't and won't eat them. She has Lica planis I think thats what it's called. Anything too spicey sets it off. My Peppers have been a dissaster this year. They are about the size of a cherry tomato, and look dead.
Starting to get Cherry tomato's from the greenhouse now. and the Money Makers are starting to get bigger.

Going to get a cold beer, as HOLBY is almost finished, and I can sit and watch a bit of Tele.

Annx

Annx Report 21 Aug 2012 21:43

Yes, I'll look for someone local Frank, they are usually a lot cheaper as you say. My word you and Ros have worked hard on your garden!! It is a real credit to you both and full of plants and colour. The lawn looks like that fine turf on bowling greens...... :-D We had a short rainstorm too, watered the garden nicely.

I researched a bit of OH's family earlier and found something that will interest FIL. He used to be a cinema projectionist in Nuneaton. Well it seems his gt grandfather's brother's grandson was managing director of a cinema in Nuneaton in 1911!! That will surprise him.......must be in the 'genes'. :-D

Jane Report 21 Aug 2012 22:16

Frank ,our Peppers are not good in the greenhouse this year. They seem to turn brown before they grow properly .The Chilli Peppers are doing great as have the cucumbers.I think we just have one more good cucumber to pick.
I have sent Chris off to bed with a flea in his ear.He was a real pain in the backside tonight. Not his fault really but he just gets ars** with me when he has had a bad day.,and today he has had to give 2 people very bad news.I am the one who has to take the brunt :-S :-S.I am used to it now after 30 odd years ,but it does tick me off sometimes.Hey Ho! I'll keep smiling :-D :-D :-D ;-).I think people sometimes think GPs/Drs are as tough as old boots......not so!.They keep the front up at work but then when they come through the front door !!! a different person :-S :-S
I'm just having a minor grumble lol.Tomorrow is a new day :-D :-D
Tatty Bye for now .See you all in the morning xx

Morning all,

I hope everyone is well today and over any ills.

It has been a sunny 24 here today. I was out the back feeding a young Currawong who was sitting on the fence. He was very keen to take the bread from my hand and kept leaning further towards me. In the end I threw the food out onto the reserve and he helped himself. I do love them, they are such intelligent birds.

Had my appt. with the optometrist yesterday. Didn't need new glasses, but I did get some sunglasses (children's frames) in an aviator style to fit my tiny face. He did a thorough check of my eyes and macular and glaucoma tests were fine, but my right eye is totally dry and my left inner eye lid is very dry. He thinks I've had a bacterial or viral infection due to the dryness and I had to buy night time gel for sleep and new daytime drops. The Sjogren's is causing damage, but if I can manage to keep my eyes lubricated I should be able to cope.

After the appointment we went for a coffee and lime tart at The Glass Onion Society a little coffee shop at Long Jetty. It is decorated with furniture from the 40s through to the 70's. Such an interesting place and they sell clothes too. I had my eye on a cream vintage lace blouse with long sleeves and hinted several times. All my looking and proding was duly ignored. :-| ;-) Then we went for a drive down to Shelly Beach sat watching the sea and the tankers anchored way out waiting to get into the coal bunkers at Newcastle. We sat and laughed and forgot about our problems for a while. All in all it a pleasant no-pressure couple of hours.

Frank I look forward to seeing pictures of your garden when everything is planted.

Jane poor Hannah getting bitten by those ants. We have nasty green ants over here and they give a really nasty nip, some people are allergic to them. We have been inundated with spiders lately, sometimes 3-4 per night. I don't know whether there is a nest somewhere in the house or a hole in the rendering where they can get in. The nasties get squashed and the harmless ones are put outside, but I wish they would visit somewhere else.

Had to laugh at Joy on Friday. We had an ambulance in the street at one of the houses and she said she got three phone calls from neighbours checking to see if she was alright. Just goes to show that people do care.

Ann I hope you get the cistern problem sorted very quickly.

Liz I often watch Parliament Question Time and it is a complete joke and waste of time. We are certainly going backwards and I do fear all our manufacturing will eventually be offshore as most of it already is. So many people losing jobs and companies closing down. It doesn't bode well for the future, but they keep telling us we are the lucky country - not for much longer.

Well the kettle is boiled and I feel like a cuppa. Have a good day all, hope it is not too hot for you. 5.30 pm AEST

Morning All and Evening Kim,

Sun and showers this morning. Kim I am so glad you enjoyed your trip out even if it was to the opticains but I expect you enjoyed the coffee etc.

Must go and look in the tunnel this morning and have a water as I have'nt been up there for two days!! There will be more beans to pick and toms. Had a good day on the table out the front yesterday. Must get more eggs out there and toms.

Frank thanks for the pics and your garden puts my border to shame at the moment. I need to get up there too and do some weeding and cut off the dead heads and tie some things up. We have had a lot of strong winds lately and things that usually stand on their own have blowns sideways or down.

Lots of ironing to do too and I don't know yet if oh is ringing tonight, so must do him some shirts.

O well off to the tunnel before it gets too hot to water.

Ann I have a bit of trouble with our cistern sometimes and just give the flush a sort of sharp bang and it stops flowing. We have the cistern in the caravan with the button on the top.

Morning and evening all,

Nice morning here, a bit cooler, but the sun is out.

Ros is busy ironing, still in her nightie, to warm to be dressed yet.
I'm sitting in my shorts as usual, will be off to the lounger and my book later.

Kim/pat, I think I missed you out with the photo's yesterday so sent them this morning.

Ann, Most of the credit is down to Ros. She loves her garden. I'm the DOG'S BODY. Dig the holes for the larger plants, and do the lawns. The green lawns are down to "GREEN THUMB" they come 4 times a year to treat both lawns for £60.00. When I see the state of other lawns around the village, it's worth every penny. No clover, buttercups, or any other type of weed. Jusr a little moss down the left hand side of the back lawn where it's in shadow all the time.

Kim, Glad your eyes are O.K. and that you enjoyed your trip to the seaside. But then again, It's all around you, isn't it ??? You must be a little more firm with your OH when you see something you like. Ros would have just bought it.

Jane, It's that time of the year today. (DAD'S BIRTHDAY). I do feel for Chris. It must be one Hell of a job, to tell people bad news about their health, I am sure he must feel aulful, coming home and taking it out on you. But I bet you can HANDLE him after all these years. Hows Hannahs bites ?? does she need some cream rubbing on them LOL LOL.

Pat, When wee were yoiung kids, we found a HORNETS NEST. One of the lads decided to fire his catapult at it, most of us ran like the devil was after us. He reloaded his catapult for a second shot. TO LATE. They were all over him and stung his face so you couldn't reconise him He walked around for a couplke of weeks, rubbing Spanish onions on the stings. That would be about about 1950. How they treat them now I don't know.

I've been going on a bit this morning, so will leave you to it, and get my shower.

Afternoon everyone,Evening Kim,

Started off lovely and sunny ,but now the black clouds have come over and i don't think it will be long before we get some rain , got my washing in so i don't mind now, the gardens could do with a nice rain and every where seems so dusty !!

Ann, hope you've got your cistern trouble sorted , i remember when we were in Turkey ,the toilet in our bathroom had one of those bits that you pulled up to flush the loo
Well i think i pulled too hard as the whole thing came up and out in my hand
:-S :-D :-D :-D that meant that the water just kept running in the cistern, well we didn't want that noise all night , and it was late at night too, we had to wait for the maintenance man to come and fix it and he took ages , we had to sit there ,we couldn't undress and get into bed while he was there.
That was a holiday to remember so many things went wrong ,and it seemed to be some thing every day ,from getting trapped in the lift, a major fire in the grounds ,the lock on my suitcase got stuck and we had to have the man out again to cut it off,he came on his moped with a huge Angle Grinder :-D :-D :-D :-D the sparks were flying round the room you never saw any thing like it ...oh and sister and BIL had their bed go missing from their room :-D :-D :-D :-D :-D

Kim it sounds as if you really enjoyed your time out , nice for you to get out and forget about things for a while, the Lime Tart sounds good :-)
What an unusual name for a coffee shop ,wonder who thought that name up LOL

Frank, the garden looks a treat ,not a weed in sight i see, plenty of colour in it too with all the assorted plants.

Better get some more ironing done ,did a little first thing ,but the things from the line need doing now !!

Donkeys years ago after complaining there were wasps under his garden shed my Father decided to smoke them.
The wasps objected and got stung many times about the head and arms.
He ended up in the RVI

The Council got rid of the wasps at a later date.

Mandy, You will go off to these foreign places. What did you expect. Glad your sister and BIL weren't still in the BED. lol lol

We had a shower just fall of the wall in one place we went in Spain. The previos people had tried to stick it to the wall.

We had lots of rain this afternoon. Ros was busy in the border again, I took her a cup of tea and cake. Just as I got back in the conservatory, the heavens opened. She dashed into the greenhouse to have her tea and cake, and had to stat there till it stopped raining. She's now fasr asleep sitting on the safa. Her diabetis tends to make her sleep alot in the afternoon. Will wake her when dinner is ready if she doesn't wake before.

David, While I was in the Air Force, Stationed in Norwich, I did a lot of fishing on the Norfolk Broards. We found a wasps nest in a bank on camp, and decided to burn it out to get to the grubs, as they made good bait. Not a good idea, we burnt all the grubs as well :-( :-( :-(

Very nice lad came to give a quote .Blimey it's a heck of a lot.I do have the option of using the Insurers contractors .I wonder if that would be the best thing.
Any ideas anyone???? Please.

Talking disastrous holidays.I went to Spain with 2 friends when I was 17.(I think I have told this before)........we arrived at the Hotel and were given a room that was just the pits.Cockroach infested and a camp bed for one of us.After kicking up a stink we were promised to be moved the following day and in the meantime the room was sprayed with some very potent smelling stuff to get rid of the roaches. We were moved as promised to a room with a balcony(not looking over the sea ,but at the back) not a problem until we discovered a perv in very brief briefs trying to break in :-S :-S.
I went down with a very nasty tummy upset and had to have a doctor. The next thing was Marianne lost a very expensive ring that she had 'borrowed' form her mothers jewelry box in the swimming pool.
She then became ill and was carted of to hospital with Appendicitis :-S :-S.
The day came for us to come home and she was allowed out of hospital just in time .She was brought from the hospital to the airport in a wheelchair and her sister and I were told not to worry .She would be put on the plane. We got on the plane and waited ...no sign of Marianne. The engine started and we were off!!!!
It turned out Marianne had somehow been put on a different plane(luckily going to the right airport)Eventually we all met up at the airport and found their Dad who had come to pick us up.He had an estate car and Marianne lay in the back of it all the way back to Plymouth.
About 12months later she was taken to hospital with stomach pains. It was discovered that a surgical swab or something had been left inside her !!!!
It was a great holiday :-D :-S

Have you noticed how many members of the medical staff stand around with their arms folded? I'm pleasewd to say staff at OUR local hospital don't have time to stand around like that, let alone play throwing paper aeroplanes!
