Marion I thought cold too, but I seem to remember that when I did it, the one that worked was hot... trying to remember if what i did was lay it in the bath, or just pour the kettle water over the join????

BC I have come to this thread really late having been away a few days. I take it you have a vacuum cleaner nozzle stuck inside the other end of the pipe.

Vaseline and other slippery substances will not help get it off, they only have limited use and should be applied before the two ends are engaged. They also might dry out a bit and exacerbate (lovely word) the problem.

My usual solution to the probelm is to place one end of the pipe into a vise (you know the contraption the male member of the family has on the bench in the shed). May sure it is squezed fairly tightly and then hold onto the other end and twist.

You might like to try spraying WD40 or CRC around the joint for added lubrication.

Give it a go.
