You may need a Koi pond filter and pump for that size pond. Ours is always murky at this time of year and the filter at the moment neds cleaning every fortnight. We have just bought a bigger pump and it is much better. We have too many fish, a few frogs and some toads, but at 75 it becomes a little of a hurdle to do anything about depopulating the pond!

what a lovely funny thread xx

Wend, me and my oh did a swap with a house that had a big pond, we had never had one before we woke one night to this weird noise never heard anything like it in my life always being a town girl i wouldn't of had a clue.
So i told him he better check what it was, he came running back upstairs saying that it looked like so huge ugly frogs were drowning smaller ones, so i told him to get a stick and push them of , he said you will have a job there are hundreds.
I called my mum the next morning to tell her we had killer frogs , she asked why what was happening 0))))))))))) her reply was did i ever learn anything at school lol .

Sadly another hurdle was when we mowed the lawn .
Finaly just before we split up he came home late from seeing his bit off fluff and fell in it lol lol

Mac - thanks very much for your advice.

Wend Report 10 May 2010 14:44

Oh Daff, how could you possibly suggest that I eat my little fishy friends? ha, ha. I remember when I last cleaned out the pond, there were only frogs in it. I put them all in 2 buckets and drove to the park. Felt a bit of a dipstick walking through the park carrying 2 buckets and got some strange looks, but I put them by the pond there and they all happily hopped in. When I got home, as I got out of the car I saw this forlorn-looking little frog sitting on the back seat looking at me!!

You could try sprouts with a fish side dish?????

Haven't a clue, Wend... but I bet there will be a local by-law prohibiting it!! ;¬))

Oh dear Daff - that's ridiculous - some people are so petty lol xxx

Mac - very good - you are a clever lad lol xxx

My problem is I've been quoted £200 minimum for cleaning out my 13ft x 6ft pond. The same man fitted a filter 6 months ago, which isn't working properly because there's just too much silt in the pond for it to cope with. I haven't cleaned it out for about 5 years and since putting fish in it 4 years ago, it's become very dirty. I know it's not the time to clean out now, but I think the fish are being adversely affected. I have decided to do it myself by putting them in a holding tank (in the form of my granddaughter's paddling pool!) and emptying the water out with a bucket (hubby said he would help me) and then I want to sift through the silt to save the snails. Also, the pond is now overstocked with goldfish and shubunkins - a few about 8 inches long, quite a few medium size and about 20 small ones from last year's breeding, and I need to do it now, because the adult fish will 'doing the annual business' again soon! One of my queries is - would it be ok for me to remove some of the fish to a large pond in one of our local parks, or would that be too traumatic for them? Any help gratefully received.

How can anyone dislike sprouts - they're yummy, especially when they're not overcooked.

Sorry Pusser - slapped wrist lol x

MrDaff Report 10 May 2010 13:57

Wend, when I first started posting, Puss was on a long ban... in those days all bans were for 8 weeks... anyway.... it was because someone objected to her use of the p***y word in her name at the time..... and reported her.

However.... Puss herself banned sprouts, but did cook some for a couple of us when we went to her house for dinner once.... very brave of her!

After cringing at my last post (I do realise I should stay away from this computer when I've had a couple of glasses of wine, ha ha), I'd like to return to the original question. My advice to you pussy would be to get some proper seed compost and sow some more dwarf peas and carry on with the mushroom compost to grow mushrooms. Mushroom compost is really just a soil improver, but it's very interesting that in a propagator it will produce mushrooms.

Whilst on the subject of matters horti, being a relatively new veggie grower, can anyone tell me if there are any veg that shouldn't be grown in soil with manure added?

Also, I need some pond cleaning advice and have a couple of queries. Does anyone have experience of pond cleaning? Perhaps I should start another thread about this, if anyone can help.

Daff, Sprouts are a firm favourite in this household. The perfect winter veg, and Christmas Dinner would not be the same without them. OH has already planted ours in the allotment. Just keeping an eye on the frosts at this time of the year, but it is essential for the perfect taste, to allow a frost on them, at the back end of the year. Around here, we always say, not to pick them until they have had a winter frost on them.
Happy Sprouting
