Tony, it did look genuine at first glance. It had the MSN logo. But it was late afternoon and I was flagging so didnt notice a couple of small things until just as I clicked on 'Send'. MSN send quite a few emails wanting me to do different things with their site. In future I will just dump such things just in case they arent the real McCoy. I never take up their offers anyway. I usually dump emails if I dont know who they are from, without opening them. Anyway, I think I am safe, after all if I gave the wrong password to Scumball he wouldnt have been able to get in, would he. I am wondering if he might have been phishing for a young nubile gullible woman. I only fit the latter part. Far from young and nubile.

hee hee.....sorry x
Weird sense of Aussie humor....lol

Some of us are like that. Its genetic...... and handed down through the generations from the convict era.

Huia. Sorry to hear you were scammed, mate.
I always think,( emails ) if it dosent look right, then dont open it ( delete ).
Always telling OH never open anything that looks suspicious that comes into her email box, or ask for your personal details.

She enters Aussie comps every day,( wins heaps too ) and belongs to a membership Competition forum on the net, so receives many emails daily.

Happy mothers day for Sunday also, to our Aussie mums and also to our N.Z mums across the pond.

I have come to the conclusion that I have probably panicked unneccesarily. I think I might have changed my password last year, but didnt note down what the new one was, and being old I have forgotten it, so gave out the wrong password! I was able to change it this morning anyway, but in the meantime I will not use hotmail for a couple of weeks if I can help it.

Oh no Huia not scammed - I have a Russian security system and it is like the KGB - it is very good plus Firefox is there as well (sometimes it can slow things down depending what mood the vixen is in). I was thinking of you the other day - had lunch with my friend from Ararimu.

When I was learning typing at high school Persey, it was a definite no-no to eat or drink by the typewriter. I must admit I play on my computer while eating and drinking but try not to have food or drink over the keyboard. It gets enough fluff in it anyway. I have a childs small paint brush which I sometimes use to try to get the fluff out.

Huia who has 2 new email addies to make up for being scammed.

Where I worked our IT person had a problem with his keyboard. He had dropped some noodles on it when eating his lunch the day before - they had dried and jammed his keys.

He was such an authoritarian person, shared an office with me - I absolutely relished e-mailing everyone his mishap.

A unique method of "data compression" and many other interesting things.lol! I thought you were serious too,Tony, but wondered at the mention of putting the CD in the tumble dryer, and don't insert the CD upside down because the data will fall off and clog up the internal mechanism,etc,etc..... Then I realised that you were having a lend of us newbies,Tony..lol :))

Huia

Huia Report 5 May 2010 03:28

Oh Tony, you are wicked. At first I thought you were serious.
1 Never leave CDs in the disc drive (I know that), but the next bit I started to wonder and before long I knew you had your tongue firmly in your cheek. I just hope no newbies take you seriously and do all the things you say.

"How to make your own disc's"

1. Find any old 45s.. rpm records.
2. Put in Microwave oven on high for 3 min to shrink to size.
3. Remove and wash under cold water...then dry.
4 Take tin foil from pantry and place shrunken record onto tin foil and make template.
5. Cut n' glue tin foil to record.

Presto!!....one new cd disc.

Warning!!
You must be over 18 to do this.

Help guide for computer beginners.

1. Never leave cd's in the disc drive, as data can leak out of the disc and corrode the inner mechanics of the drive. cd's should be washed in luke warm water, and spun dry in tumble dryer.

2. Disc's should be cleaned and waxed once a week. Microscopic metal particles can be removed by waving a powerful magnet over the surface of the disk. Any stubborn metallic shavings can be removed with scouring powder and soap. When waxing disc's, make sure application is even. This will allow the diskettes to spin faster, resulting in better access time.

3. Do not fold disc's unless they do not fit in the drive. "Big" disc's may be put in microwave to shrink or make soft enough to fold and used in "little" disc drives.

4. Never insert a disc into the drive upside down. The data can fall off the surface of the disc and jam the intricate mechanics of the drive.

5. cd disc's cannot be backed up by running them through the Xerox machine. If your data needs to be backed up, simply insert two disc's together into the drive whenever you update a document; the data will be recorded on both cd's.

6. Disc's should not be inserted into, or removed from the drive while the red light is flashing. Doing so could result in smeared or possibly unreadable text. Occasionally the red light continues to flash in what is known as a "hung" or "hooked" state. If your system is "hooking" you, you will probably need to insert several dollars before being allowed to access the disc drive.

7. If your cd disc is full and you need more storage space, remove the disc from the drive and shake vigorously for two minutes. This will pack the data to one side("data compression") enough to allow for more storage. Be sure to cover this packed side with scotch tape to prevent loss of data.

When I first got a computer (a refurbished one) several years ago, there was no book of instructions with it and I hadnt had any real lessons, just the man in the photo shop who had a computer for people to use and he told me how to send emails etc but he never told me how to turn it on/off. When I got my computer I managed to set it up myself and found the button to turn it on. When I finished for the day I assumed it was the same button to turn it off, and when I turned it on the next day it smacked my hand for not turning off the correct way. It was quite some time later after many smacks that I discovered by accident that the start button produced a button which was for turning the computer off. You live and learn.

Yes, got the WoF. The Hunua garage fixed the soft tyre, a small nail in it, then did the WoF. They will pump fuel for us, unlike a lot of the 'service' stations as on the TV tonight. Small country garages certainly give service, even though they dont call them service stations.

I always have either note pad, or a word doc or even a spreadsheet available on the bottom bar of computer and just copy and paste to that what ever I happen to like.

I have all of Tony's websites for look ups on a word doc. I am never sure what genes will get up to and would not like to lose my bookmarked ones so have backups.

Hope you pass your WOF our Huia....

Thanks everyone for telling me where to find Accessories. I had forgotten about that 'Programmes' bit on the Start programme, although I did look at the list on Start but missed Programmes. Old age getting to me. I will have to bookmark this thread as I am going to town soon, our WoF is due tomorrow and one of my tyres keeps getting soft so will get the local garage to fix it (I hope) before I go for the WoF.

Glad you worked it out.

I use copy/paste to note pad a lot for FH ( recording relos, BDM's before adding to my tree) or to add various notes. You can also "save" your work in Notepad or "Save as" ( under "File" )..... and give it a title.

Great for going back on to check something.

Theres a few different ways to Copy/Paste and Bob's way is a goodun too.

You can copy/paste various "text" or text sections, on the www ( world wide web.) Sports, Songs, Jokes, Music, ect,ect

Some Web sites wont let you... ( Copyright )

Huia. Just as others said.

Go to "START" ( bottom left hand crn.)..and hover or "click" mouse pointer over it....see: " Programs" or "All Programs"
Box will open up..... and "Accessories" is usually up near top. Notepad and Wordpad are in here along with other items such as "Paint"...... "Calculator".....and much more.

This has made me think of something I thought very funny at the time.
Some twenty-five years ago, a young girl in my office convinced the powers that be, that they should pay for her to go to nightclass for Computer studies. She completed the course, very well.
Funny thing was, nobody showed her how to turn the computer on, and it cost the company more money, to sort out the problems she cuased to the system.
Well, I thought it was funny at the time.
