Why is choosing babies names such a nightmare?

Daff, your son's name definitely won't 'go' with their surname...lol

I agree it's their decision but having a large family we end up saying 'so and so's Paul' and 'so and so's Henry.

Then we have the friends.....who are all called by their first name and the village where they were brought up tagged on (that's a hangover from school).

2 things ought to be considered when choosing a child's name

1) What is it going to be shortened to in the playground?
2) Could initials cause embarrassment eg Stephen Oliver Davis would end up as SOD - lol

What ever the parents choose, the child will be much loved.

Tell the parents to go with a name they like and forget everyone else. You won't please everyone and ultimately it's their child so therefore their decision.

My daughters name was chosen by me 30+ years before she was born

My OH thought up our sons name not that long before he was born...which was a good job really as he was 10 weeks prem

Well, there is my son's name.... and his brother was going to be called Rhodri or Cennydd, but I was staying with in laws and they were making my life hell... so he has a good old fashioned English name....

Older son was going to be Sian or Rhiannon... younger son Anwen or Carys if they had been girls...

Some of the Welsh names can sound a little harsh, I think.

I love Ffion, Owain, Caradoc (I know, no-one else does!!) Ianto, Morgan oh, and Dafydd.

Love

Julia,

They have so many friends so choosing one of their names is tricky..lol, which one ends up happy?

If it's a girl they are agreed, at the moment, on one name..lol that may change though.

Rita, I don't think they will get as far as three names! :-))

Edit: that's the problem with naming your child with the 'in' name, in later years it can become a joke because of TV programmes and the names they use as a stereotype.

Morning All, I like Gethin, which is soft sounding, and Gethin Jones is lovely and a big softie. On the other hand I find Geriant, rather hard sounding.
Good Luck to the prospective parents, and the impending new arrival

Thanks for your replies :-))

The only thing everyone agrees on it that the name should be a 'soft sounding' one, not Gerallt, Llyr, Gerwyn etc., and my OH has to be able to pronounce it...lol

When I was pregnant with my eldest, my ex and I were going to call him Michael Dennis, if it was a boy. We hadn't decided on a girls name. When I was in labour the midwife asked me what I was going to call him/her. The name I said was completely different (I still don't know why) for a boy, but still no name for a girl. Fortunately, I had a boy and he is the name that I blurted out whilst in labour.

We had such a problem naming our younger daughter that she was registered late.
Daughter and son in law couldn't decide on the middle name(s) for their youngest son (born March 21) - I had a thread up about this, but will repeat myself - someone suggested the grandfather's names, but son in law pointed out that Kevin Clyve sounded like pants from Poundland!
They made a panic decison in the registry office!

Found lots of problems with a 7 year gap between offspring and having oldest and youngest in the family.

OH came up with Nicholas which suits him well.

Where did he get it from? An Estate agents Board!!!!

You must stick to your guns and instinct and not worry about what everyone else says
All the Nicks we know were nice but was never on our list of names which by a process of elimination dwindled to zero.

A likes XX, B knows an XX and doesn't like them. B Likes YY but a friend is called the same name. A likes XY but C doesn't cos there was someone at school who was a nerd. A likes YX but we all know a TV personaility with that name and we all hate him.

FGS, it'll be called baby for the rest of it's life...lol

7 weeks to go so not much time left.

Daughter and I both love the name Delmi but my nephew laughed and said Delboy (I could have killed him). So Osian (Oshan) is the favourite but SIL likes another name altogether so if it's a boy he will probably be called IT.

Aaaaargh
