You're so right Hayley,who watches that rubbish anyway?

There were very good social dramas in the sixties and seventies.

Annie was that play called 'Who's a good boy then' with Thora Hird as the mother?

There was also another one called Walter.It was about a man who had mental health issues and lived with his mother.His mother died in bed and Walter let all his pigeons fly around the house.He was eventually put into a instituion and was treated very bad. Annie

I remember this well Hayley.It part of the popular Wednesday play series in 1966
Very emotional and highlighted Shelter which had been started earlier,it's sad to think the charity is still needed today! and sadly there are families even now who are being evicted due to mortgages not being met. Although I would hope they will be rehoused.

~~~~~to BC how's yer poorly feet me dear? XX
I remember seeing the film / play when I was a youngster , it frightened me .
I've just been reading up about it on Wikipedia.......apparently a lot of good did come from it ( after all it was very powerful stuff ).......the organisation " Shelter " became a national organisation not long after it was first screened .
The man who wrote it also wrote " Edna , the Inebriate Woman " ( which was another powerful play back in the early 70s . His wife penned " Up the Junction " , so the pair of them must have been very interested in social change.........hats off to them .
As a last resort the family were seprated and he has to find lodgings and she goes to live in a sort of mother and baby unit, to start with he visits her often and gives her £6.00 aweek ( he earns £11.00) as she has to pay for her keep in the unit, he visits less and less then stops so does the money and she is unable to to pay, the last scene is of her sat on a train station platform and with no where to go, they just come take her children and leave her there.
They also move from there to a house which is boarded up, he paid a bloke in the pub £10.00 as a deposit for that place and by then she had another tiny baby, she was quiet to make a home there till they were evicted from there as well.
I remember it caused a massive reaction when it was broadcast. There was an awful lot of denials in the press that it could happen in the way it was portrayed.
It does still happen to a degree but social housing is supposed to scoop up families with young children. I saw a programme about a family being evicted as they were in serious arrears with their mortgage. They were given exactly one hour to get as many possession out of the house as they could. The distress on the childrens' faces was so upsetting.
