If a woman was listed as " housekeeper" in 1841 do you think it's quite likely that she might have been the cook as well ?

Possible.

Or, even, the "lady of the house". I've come across one that I tracked back to "housekeeper" but she had children by the man of the house ...

I've got a daughter living with her father (Widowed) and she was housekeeper age 16.

LOL Mrs Grumpy.......I don't think the one I'm searching for was the lady of the house but she is certainly giving me the run around !

As it happens it was Lynda's " Sandwich " tread that has sparked me off again......just to bang my head on the same blinking wall I always end up at ....ggrrrr

I've got a photo of the one I'm looking for ( my G.G.Grand mother ) judging by the looks of her I'm not at all surprised she only had one child , I can't imagine she would have been up for much " hows your father "......lol

Family story is that she was the cook at Walmer Castle . I've found Walmer castle on the 1841 census and the housekeeper was a Mary ( her Christian name ).......so maybe I have found her ?

Housekeeper, no she'd be the main cook/in charge of the staff..

Agree with Whirley in this case. If she was housekeeper at Walmer Castle she wouldn't be making the gravy, she'd be checking that the Castle was running smoothly.

I know Lynda.....lol.....I wish I hadn't seen you thread , it started me off !
Your ALWAYS in my places of interest............lol

From what I've seen on the cencus Whirley it was all staff and no people....lol.....just a child Lord and Lady in 1841 ?

I don't actually know when my G.G. Grandmother was in the position of cook......might well have been before 1841 anyway : (
