From what I've seen on the cencus Whirley it was all staff and no people....lol.....just a child Lord and Lady in 1841 ?

I don't actually know when my G.G. Grandmother was in the position of cook......might well have been before 1841 anyway : (

Agree with Whirley in this case. If she was housekeeper at Walmer Castle she wouldn't be making the gravy, she'd be checking that the Castle was running smoothly.

Family story is that she was the cook at Walmer Castle . I've found Walmer castle on the 1841 census and the housekeeper was a Mary ( her Christian name ).......so maybe I have found her ?

I've got a photo of the one I'm looking for ( my G.G.Grand mother ) judging by the looks of her I'm not at all surprised she only had one child , I can't imagine she would have been up for much " hows your father "......lol

Or, even, the "lady of the house". I've come across one that I tracked back to "housekeeper" but she had children by the man of the house ...

If a woman was listed as " housekeeper" in 1841 do you think it's quite likely that she might have been the cook as well ?
