I found this little item today. It's made of lead alloy and looks to me like possibly a jester or someone in late medieval dress. It's got me a bit stumped, so any ideas of what it might be gratefully accepted.....I need to put a rough date to it. It's 4cm tall.

I think it's a voodoo doll. Did you find any pins nearby?

No, its not a voodoo doll. This thread OK for you?

Maybe it was some sort of child's toy. Or the equivalent of a 'fairing'. It sort of looks like a pixie or joker.

Wow, that's wonderful! Maybe we'll see you one day on the antiques Roadshow ;)

It does look very "jesterish" doesn't it?

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 22 Apr 2010 22:14

yes, its got the look of a jester sort of thing. I'm not sure about it being a toy - its got a fixing on the rear. The context in which it was found would suggest 16th C......

Punchinello ...

AnninGlos Report 22 Apr 2010 22:16

If it has a fixing could it have been a brooch?

Rose iv got the punchinella song in my head now!

could it be som sort of good luck charm?

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 22 Apr 2010 22:24

I'm liking the punchinello idea.........I dont think it's a brooch or a charm, I wouldnt expect either to be made of lead, but it's still possible. It may, of course, be mor emodern than I think, but I definetely like the punchinello.

Mwaah Rose!

Just away having a search, but the shape of the collar is certainly about right for Punchinello / Pulchinello 17th c Commedia del arte ( wishing I'd kept the theatre books i had tsk)

I THINK ITS A TOY PIRATE DOLL cVICTORIAN

supercrutch

supercrutch Report 22 Apr 2010 23:34

Just my opinion, if it's 16c then I can't see it being a toy because the arms are defined as opposed to being close to the body. If it has a fixing then possibly a tradesmans advertising piece.

Hey what the hell do I know...lol

Do you have the answer? and are being a little tease?

Eldrick

Eldrick Report 22 Apr 2010 23:34

thanks, but its not a pirate or a doll, lol.

As I say, it was a definite late medieval context that I found it (archaeological site) but it's possible that it has somehow been introduced into the layer.
