Promiscuous women are responsible for earthquakes, a senior Iranian cleric has said.
Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedighi told worshippers in Tehran last Friday that they had to stick to strict codes of modesty to protect themselves.

"Many women who do not dress modestly lead young men astray and spread adultery in society which increases earthquakes," he said.

Tens of thousands of people have died in Iran earthquakes in the last decade.

Mr Sedighi was delivering a sermon on the need for a "general repentance" by Iranians.

"What can we do to avoid being buried under the rubble? There is no other solution but to take refuge in religion and to adapt our lives to Islam's moral codes," he said.

'Disappoint God'

Young Iranians sometimes push the boundaries of how they can dress, showing hair under their headscarves or wearing tight fitting clothes.

Mr Sedighi also referred to violence following last year's elections, which occurred when thousands of - mostly young - Iranians protested against the result, as a "political earthquake".

"Now if a natural earthquake hits Tehran, no one will be able to confront such a calamity but God's power, only God's power. So lets not disappoint God."

Hmmm I read the article...... nonsense ofcourse, and only a man would come up with this.

Ronald exactly what is your viewpoint, and reason for putting this up without a clarifying comment of your own, and how you stand?

To me, it appears that you have made a deliberate attempt to stir up anti-Islamic feeling amongst GR members who contribute to the boards. Which I find somewhat offensive to be honest.

Now THAT would be worthy of a BNP agitator.

Nasty b's, the BNP.

Shame this 'cleric' didn't mention that the modesty laws apply to men too!

Really pees me off to see a moslem woman appropriately attired, in the company of (I presume) her husband in shorts walking down a British street!
This wouldn't be allowed in a strict moslem country, but I have seen it in lax Moslem countries. One law for one - one law for everyone I say!!!

I'm intrigued about how inappropriate dress (obviously from what he said - only by women) can cause extramarital sex . Certainly 'ordinary' women wouldn't - nay couldn't. Surely there aren't any prostitutes in Iran? If there are - how can they stay there? Oh that would be because hypocritical religious men like Ayatollah Kazem Sedighi and his ilk have a use for them!!
I also note he says it's attractive inappropriately dressed women - so he's been looking has he??? Naughty boy! Probably okay for unattractive women then!

Perhaps it's hypocrisy in ALL religons that cause earthquakes......

......or maybe it's tectonic plates moving

Lol Sharron..... that made me giggle.

Just so, Maggie.

But I would still like to know why Ronald saw fit to take the effort to C & P this news item, but didn't see fit to state his purpose for doing so.

In my opinion, humble or otherwise... I believe Ronald's intentions were to stir up either anti muslim OR anti woman feeling. There is no other reason to use this article on these boards, otherwise.

Unless he thought it amusing??

Sorry, I am not laughing, Ronald.

I agree with everyone's comments on this thread, which is strange in itself, lol!!!

However it does annoy me that men are expected to have uncontrollable urges which women are responsible for dealing with by dressing modestly. I personally feel that men are responsible for lots of the injustices in this world and when they realise that it will be a nicer place for all of us.

Looks like this might end up being an anti-men thread, after all.

(And I have a lovely hubby and two sons as well as a daughter.)

To be honest Daff, I was going to post the same thing when I saw it, but didn't get around to it. I often leave no comments when posting news articles to let others voice their opinions.

I'm not anti muslim, I would be just posting to show the absurdity of it and highlight the things that women around the world still have to endure.

If it had been posted by the CofE or some religious cult in America, i still would have done the same thing.

Hiya 0071/2... it feels rather a strange one to just leave like that.... no comments, no nothing... and no re-visit to put me in my place, either.... I allowed plenty of time for that!! You would certainly have monitored a thread of that sort... it is your *style* and you would have joined in with healthy debate.

This has just been dumped!!

I would have been very happy to apologise to Ronald had he answered and allayed my early suspicion... but to put something this contentious up and then just leave it!!

I am not saying he is anti-muslim himself.... but I feel the way it was put up, and left up, invites anti-muslim feelings of anger... it is the way *that* party works... I have recently heard them in action, and very palusible they sounded too.....

And this post *felt* rather like that.

Women do indeed have to endure so dreadful things in the world. One thing I have never been able to understand is that female genital mutilation in little girls is carried out by women.

I just can't fathom that at all.

MrDaff Report 21 Apr 2010 20:07

I know, Sharron..... and very often the poor little girl's own mother, grandmother and aunts.

And it still happens in this country, illegally of course, but it happens none the less.

In my view an inflammatory thing for Hojatoleslam Kazem Sedigh to say and an inflammatory thread for Ronald to put up.

You are reading things into the thread that ain't there.

I ain't BNP for a start - some of you women do like to stir things up for no reason.

It was an item on BBC News website and I found it both sad, absurd and funny but thought it would be of interest to people

To me it shows how religion can be 'twisted' to serve a nutters ends.

I trust this response is of interest but no doubt some twisted person will find it offensive just for the hell of it.

Do have a nice day and thank the good Lord that you don't live in such a controlled society as Iran

Rambling

Rambling Report 21 Apr 2010 21:57

Ronald i always find, not being a woman who like to stir things up for no reason, that when posting a quote,or item of news, it always helps to say WHY one has posted it...just a short sentence along the lines of 'Isn't this upsetting/funny/thought provoking' etc.

Perhaps even (heaven forfend), give my own serious opinions on the matter . :) That way there is never any doubt as to my motivation in posting.

Ron2 Report 21 Apr 2010 22:17

RamblingRose - that's your view, but it's yours not mine. Why should I conform to your view? I'm entitled to mine just as you entitled to yours. Pity you've nowt better to do with your time than argue for the sake of it.

Being the daughter of a Moslem, I could say I agree with everything the Ayatollah said - after all wasn't I brought up to be a 'good' girl/woman?

Fortunately my father wasn't a fascist. I have a good education, wear 'normal' clothes and was pregnant when I got married (to the man I loved - at the time) - no stoning involved!!

This sort of reporting - of the looniest members of life/religion/sexual preferences etc, just adds to the 'pigeonholing of people in society and should be treated with the contempt/sarcasm it deserves!!

The words of this plonker should have remained in his bathroom, and were not worthy of reporting.

The islamic countries were far more advanced than the Western world in times gone by - and knew about the stars, science and volcanoes etc way before the West - unfortunately men's lust for power (via 'religion') got in the way and they are now reduced to ignorant pratts like this uttering total drivel - giving the rest of the world the opinion that they've just emerged from the stone age!

Sharron Report 22 Apr 2010 08:21

I had a muslim boyfriend for three years when I was in my early twenties. He came from Pakistan where,I believe, the interpretation of Islam is a little at theconvenience of men,he would drink and do one or to other things(very well I might add!)but be a hardline muslim when it suited him.
This left me very wary of muslims until I met a Turkish family of muslims who were very laid back. As it was explained to me, as not all christians are not Bretheren or other extremists neither are all muslims. Just because one bigot talks extremist crap it does not make them all bigots, just like not all Catholic priests are paedoes.
