Is there any way in which I can find out the name of my grandfather's mother without sending for certificates.

Thanks

Depends on how much you know to start with really!

if your grandfathers name is fairly uncommon, you know his birth year and he can be found on a census you might be lucky ...

put up the details you have and someone will look , even so you may only be 100% sure with a cert.

Have you found the family on the 1871 census to find out his mother's first name? It would then be easier to find the marriage of his parents.

I have looked at the 1871 census but cannot find any of these listed. I realise that if I could find them or even william at least hopefully it would show his mother's name. I do know that his father's mane was William as this is on the marriage cert.

I think on this one you are going to need the birth certificate, the name is not scarce enough .
