Saudi cleric favours one-eye veil

A Muslim cleric in Saudi Arabia has called on women to wear a full veil, or niqab, that reveals only one eye.

Sheikh Muhammad al-Habadan said showing both eyes encouraged women to use eye make-up to look seductive.

The question of how much of her face a woman should cover is a controversial topic in many Muslim societies.

The niqab is more common in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, but women in much of the Muslim Middle East wear a headscarf which covers only their hair.

Sheikh Habadan, an ultra-conservative cleric who is said to have wide influence among religious Saudis, was answering questions on the Muslim satellite channel al-Majd.

It is of course true that many of us will find this preposterous !

BUT please don't let us go to the other extreme and insist on abolishing any kind of cover-up - as they appear to be trying to do in France. We should be very careful before we ban what seems to be excess modesty.
By all means we must encourage and educate both men and women not to see unveiled women as shocking - but don't embarrass or offend the women and girls who do feel it is proper

There must be a time when they feel very protected under all that material. I don't know for sure but do they perhaps feel - safe?

But Mick, if they've worn a veil for donkeys years - wouldn't some of them find it really hard not to wear it?

And I did mean safe with a question mark. Perhaps a bit like a security blanket - if you're hidden from the world, you are also maybe hiding from the world? Sorry, struggling to find the right words here - I will have to think about it a bit more.

If the woman choose to wear the full cover up I guess that's up to them. I know that some do feel safe that way...BUT..for a dictat that only one eye can be exposed is just bloody ridiculous. This cleric should look at his own morals if two eyes disturb him that much..

I am sure I remember - and I must be talking about forty or fifty years ago! an Iranian friend telling me that when the Shah pronounced that women should stop wearing the veil it caused a lot of distress to older women who felt hugely embarrassed by having to appear in publilc so undressed

Purely as a matter of safety I would think it would be dangerous in modern society to only be able to see from one eye and that sight being very restricted. Imagine trying to cross a busy road etc.

As a matter of banning the wearing of the full cover up I think what they wear is up to them, except in places where disguise could be a matter of safety, such as Banks and airports. I think their faces should be visible for the time they pass through security or when at the counter in the bank.

I do believe some women choose to wear the burkha but no one should be forced to by any man if they do not wish to do so.

when these women were young they were likely quite beautiful, does all this cover up imply that they have turned into camels?
and the men are ashamed of their womenfolk?

i think ppl who wear these are bleedy scarey marys lol
its not religion its just so other men dont look at muslims wifes its the husbands they make them ware it .. its ok in their country but i think its scary
if i went to sauldi or somewhere like that i would have to cover up ...(wont be going there then ) .

Hello

A lady of a muslim faith can wear a head dress but without the veil. The head dress is covering enough.

Most muslim ladies of all ages that I see wear the head dress, but certainly no veil.

I don't see why for practical reasons anyone should be made to cover their face.

No women or man is the property of another.
