I got my first dog about ten years ago when I got my own house - Mum refused to have pets anywhere near her - George a Lab?Mastiff Cross came from the pound and after some initial issues is now the most laid back canine ever. Dad has been here most days this week helping with this DIY lark and what does George do? Stay in bed (which means the double bed in the spare room) until his human mum comes home from work for lunch.

And yes I am a dog person.

4 cats all rejects of society and I wouldn’t be without any of them.

No.1 cat is hiding under the desk as she has just had medicene injected down her throat and will have another different one in half an hour. Shes also on steriods for life and has an incurable illness that flares up maybe four or five times a year, too much hassle for her previous owners and too much expense! They left her at a dog’s home of all places!!! Shes been with us 5 years now and although not a lap cat can be very affectionate and loving and when Shes in good health has a quality of life that’s worth living - Shes a very happy and loyal lady.

No.2 Cat is snoozing in his bed in the front room. A loveable rogue who must be about 2.5 years now. Our vet put us in touch with a woman who had rescued him at 5 weeks as he was being used as training bait for fighting dogs!!! We have had him since his eyes changed which we think was about 8 weeks.

No.3 Cat affectionately known as Tripod is lying outside the cat flap, close to home but appreciating the cool of the night - but close enough to jump in of he hears the sounds of biscuits ....... Lost a leg, fractured eye socket and Broken Jaw before we took him in - has his own clock and goes to bed regularly at ten unless its too hot like tonight then waits for me.

No.4 Cat Asleep on Kitchen table - although knows he is not supposed to be!!!! What can I tell you, mean, grumpy, bad tempered and the heat is not helping this elderly Longhaired beast about the size of small (not toy) dog! But you gotta love him for all his grumbling he’s an old man and had a very hard life going from home to home.

First time I really got to take to a cat was when we first married. Older gent downstairs was looking after his daughter's cat whilst she was working abroad.....Cat was called Snap..1983/84. He visited us so often, that when we re-painted our front door, it had Snap paw prints!

I thought about abducting him when we moved house, as he was a regular visitor. By now I was pregnant and hormonal. Alas, Snap's lady owner returned home.

Next cat , was a manic ginger tom, called Skipper. We had him for about a year. He was partial to climbing wallpaper and curtains!

One day, a strange, new cat appeared in our garden. Whenever I tried to get Skipper into the house,this newbie got between us and hissed with a passion. Skipper seemed happy to have a new friend!?! He stayed out that night.

Next morning , hissy new cat.... no Skipper. Never did find him! Still sad to think about what happened to him. I put up 'Lost posters', but no luck!

Next cat( no.3), was another rescue cat, called Cassie. She was a lady from the off! Part Persian and she walked around like she owned the place!

To keep Cassie company, we adopted another female called Tipsy.(4) We got her from the local Cat and Dog home. She was a tortoishell and white mixture.

We added to the family by taking on Leo.(5) He was a silver tabby kitten when we got him. Not the nicest looking of cats when we brought him home. But as he was all alone, and looked as if to say ' take me, please?', we couldn't resist. He grew into a very handsome cat....but was only too happy to bring home regular gifts.

When we lost Leo, around 18 months ago, we decided not to have another cat. You get too attached to them!.......But about 8 months ago, our daughter Gemma, got herself a rescue cat... Tom.

A few weeks later, or daughter gets word that she has got a full time job! This now means, that from taking the children to childminder, and going to work, Tom is being left for around 11 hours on his own.

There is only one logical option....Would we think about taking Tom to live with us?........................So, since mid November, we now have Tom!!
We could hardly say no!!

5 cats 1 dog and a husband,and trust me the animals are a lot easier than the husband

HI I have two lovely ginger toms, I've always had dogs too,but after the last two died of old age, decided not to have the hassle of all the walkies ect as i'm no spring chicken. Make do with dog sitting the offsprings pets when they go on hols.

Have to admit I've never had cat that is quite as accepting of me as one of the three.
George is incredibly affectionate, but he insists on showing me his butt every time he wants affection!!

I have never been without a cat for my entire life. Even when working overseas for two years, my landlady's cat adopted me and slept on my bed while my Mum cared for my other cat back home.

I've had dogs intermittently and loved them but always had someone else to bath and walk them. I won't have one now that I'm on my own because I don't believe anyone should have an animal if they can't care for them properly and I would not be able to do it. I can care for my cat and get her to the Vet if and when necessary so I have to settle for that these days.
This one is thoroughly spoiled but is good company. I don't have long conversations with her, but when I do speak to her, she looks at my face and talks back to me - so I don't feel ridiculous about talking to 'myself'!!

I have a delightful rescue cat - my best pal and good company - his name is Cadwaladr, Caddy for short!!

I was told she was spayed.......
Mum (lovely though she was) had to go back as she obviously wanted to be the only cat and, apart from attacking her offspring - used to wee in my bed! She was rehomed a week later (I'd had her spayed).

Previously: the neighbours abandoned cat, 2 cats from a 'friend' who was trying to sell his house - one was verging on the senile - the other cr*pped on the landing (not good when trying to sell a house)

The first two I had (long dead now) - I actually chose - 1984!!!!

I love dogs - but work.

Dogs are my preference but we have also had some lovely cats over the years.

Our last cat was killed crossing the road last year and I won't get another as it was awful having to tell the grandchildren.

We currently have a beautiful giant breed chunky chocolate labrador who is now 15mths old. Keeps nicking my drawers off the line!

We also have a tortoise and she is about 90yrs old.

We have two baby budgies. Bought them from a chap who breeds champion show birds. These two were rejects and didn't tick all the boxes but they are lovely.

Oh, and we have a couple of visitors for the next couple of weeks. Two gerbils while the grandkids are on holiday. Noisy little beggers.

Also have a tame robin in the garden who sits on the bench outside the kitchen window waiting to be fed every day.

1 dog a lurcher called Tess (2 children and a husband lol) from the local animal refuge her and her sister and brother were abandoned at 4 months old. We got her when oh mum died as a pick us up and boy did she pick us up lol not stopped since.

Like all animals but draw the line at rats, mice, cats, ferrets etc

I do agree with you on that and I hope that what goes around does so quickly.
And yes Cats do choose their servants rather than the other way round. lol

i've got a dog, she's about 9 years old and we've had her for 4 years, got her from Blue Cross. our last pet was a dog, also a rescue. And used to have a budgie

I like cats but they make me sneeze!

Aaaaaaaaah. hoobity boobity.. I do so feel for your lost cats!

I hope that the saying that my late mother in law used,( what goes around, comes around) , is paid back, to those that harmed your cats!

I do believe what you say, though, that our feline friends choose to stay with us!

I have one dog ,called Chester.Would love another cat though,but have seen too many get squished on the road ,so will just stick with a dog lol

You mentioned rabbits! My last Tom, sadly no longer with us!, was a bugger, for bringing them home as gifts. As our house borders onto waste ground, he had a number of field days! Sadly, they were mostly little ones!

As I said earlier, new boy Tom, doesn't venture out much. Only when we are with him, as he tends to 'panic' when he cannot see us!

This suits us all. As when we were without cat(s) for about a year,we have put lots of feed/ seeds in the garden for the birds!

I have 2 dogs and 3 cats

But I am more of a dog person than cat.

Tbh........I probably won't get another cat .......2 of my 3 are delinquents and have put me off for life lol xx
