UzziAndHerDogs Report 26 Apr 2009 17:39

I came back from my dads funeral with his memoirs in hand. I wanted to go on the net and I wanted my friend to explain about a family tree. She did and suggested GR as a cheap option to start with.
A month to day of losing my Dad, I started finding about rellies I also started finding that people were friends and there for me in my grief.
This site helped me stay together on the loss of me Dad.
Since then it has taught me about the internet (how to use it ) I hate to say that its also taught me that some know how to abuse it.
I joined the boards as often alone, I had time, and realised late on that they were no better than my old pub on a weekend. ( Gawd politics have a lot to learn from the local side).

Since then I have seen much more but that would come under a different heading.
but I have stayed for the friendship more than hot matches !

WHY DID YOU JOIN GR ?

Grabagran Report 26 Apr 2009 17:43

Hi Uzzi. With the goal of trying to find out about my rellies, but hey ho I've not got round to doing a tree, and what I have found came from other sources lol

I don't go out to the pub, so find it a good way to pass the night, even if I don't add to any threads.
Just reading them can be amusing.

Hope you have a good night

xx

I joined GR, after joining Friends Reuniited to look for an old workmate. I saw the ad and thought about all the old photos and odd certs sitting in a suitcase, and the basic tree I had of my Irish side . To start with I just read the tips and 'pottered' on the freebmd that was mentioned...then saw a thread about Watermen and asked for help...bingo lol.

But I stay for the friends, and also because with more confidence (and an ancestry sub lol ) I like doing look ups :))

Hi Uzzi, Vicki

This is a good thread, thank you.

Why did I join GR?

I joined for very personal reasons, one of which was to try and find siblings I had only recently discovered existed.

I was searching for them by myself then one day decided to give up GR. The next minute a hot match came, twas one of the long-lost adopted siblings I'd been searching for, rejoined and somehow 'fell into Chat', put a thread up called 'What's it like to meet up with an adopted sibling' and the rest as they say, is history.

I am so glad I joined GR, that I am on Chat, Gen and more and like you Uzzi, I have stayed more for the friendships I have made.

I only bought my lappy two years ago. Grandchildren, who'd have them. Told me I had to get with it.
Anyway, started to do my family tree, and got back to 1750. Stumped then, so I started to come on the boards occassionally. I join in threads if I feel I will be made welcome, and leave the controvercial ones alone. Expressed my own opinions on some subjects, but get dismayed when I turn on in a morning and find people have been up setting each other in the night.

Hello Uzzi ,

I joined back in 2003 as one of the first people I ever " met " on the web from my tree recommended the site . The several years I worked on my tree..............then a couple of years ago I stumbled upon the general board.........I've been hanging around the boards ever since.........lol

I still think this is a great site and I do still find " new " connections to my tree. The thrill of making someones day by giving them a helping hand with tree info has never gone away for me : ))

Sally Report 26 Apr 2009 18:44

At first I asked OH to show me how to use the computer to find out info on herbal remedies for Equine Cushings Disease, which I did......Agnus Castus which kept him going for another 2 years........after my horse died......I found FR on the computer and met up with a long lost classmate who came over from Canada to see me.....

......then GR and I decided to look up my Dad's side of the family.......he always said he did not know anything much about his side......whereas Mum's was a close and loving family, even to Gt. Uncles and Aunts......

I did my Granny's tree with a lot of help from Chris Drake on here who had researched my Granny's rare name for 35 years back to 1702......when I showed him that my Granny had been the youngest of 13 children......he said......Oh noooo, that cannot be her, she came from a posh family, they owned butchers and hairdressers........ so I did not tell him any more.......of course, it was Granny.......

Have found out so much family stuff......mainly that we come from a long line of miners and ag labs with other things like seamen popping up now and again.......nothing notable.......but family nevertheless....

So the short answer Uzzi......was that looking for my Dad's rellies prompted me........sorry about your Dad......mine has gone now too......but not so sad anymore.....

Hello Uzzi

I've been doing my tree for over 20 years but actually joined here in 2003 to get in touch with someone. I made loads of contacts on here, cousins of all variations and have kept in touch with many of them. Don't have my tree on here now but have made some very good mates and occasionally use the site for help:)

SueMaid Report 26 Apr 2009 21:57

I became interested in the family tree while helping my youngest with a school project but didn't do anything about it until I became interested in the computer. I've always wanted to find my roots because my parents and I had emigrated to Australia and no other family were here or followed us. My father has always talked about the family so I knew the names of some family members.

This site was recommended to me and I joined and put up a basic tree. Within a few days I had a message from a cousin who I never knew I had. I met him last year for the first time - it was wonderful:) I have had some wonderful help from this site and made some great friends - some I've been lucky enough to meet:) I found the chat board by accident - that could be a good or bad thing. I'm not sure:))
