well when i went to school many moons ago
we had to wear school uniform , we had no choice .
and the school my grandsons go to have to wear uniform as well . i think its a good idea so that all the children are dressed the same other wise i think your going to get the children who's parents can afford expensive clothes and those who cant and i think thats where the trouble would start. i maybe wrong i dont know .........

Yes. It is (in our case) so much cheaper and more practical as their good clothes don't get ruined by paint, glue etc.

Ooh, something that has been debated since goodness knows when.

I think school uniform is a good thing, as long as the uniform is easily available and inexpensive. If it can be purchased anywhere, i.e. if it is not too rigid with special blazers etc then it can save parents money as little Johny and Susie will be dressed the same as their friends and there will be no competition as to who can wear the prettiest dress, most expensive trainers.

It also gives the children a sense of identity, and from outsiders points of view identifies a child with a school (this can come in useful with trouble makers of course.)

I think that the last three school years pupils (used to be fifth and lower and upper sixth form but I know it is different now should have a slightly different uniform, a bit more grown up and a bit more leeway. Maybe even no uniform in the last year. however, not all schools these days have sixth form as there are sixth form colleges. So not uniform for them and usually not a lot of dress code.

I will be interested to hear from people with school age children as I admit to being a bit out of touch. Is uniform expensive these days? it was in my time, only one shop stocked it, special blazers with woven badges being very expensive.

I agree with Haxel and MezzoForteSal they should wear them, then nobody stands out with the designer stuff etc, this could be a strain on parents as their children will want the same sort of stuff as the designer stuff

Definately well until they've finished their GCSE's, I do feel sorry for the people I met at uni whose schools insisted they were school uniform in sixth form too. By sixth form you could wear what you wanted, as long as it was decent, the fact we had to wear uniform until then made us appreciate the freedom to wear what we wanted to.

I think they are a good idea providing they are kept simple and inexpensive.

Our school is black trousers, white polo shirt and royal blue logo {£7} sweatshirt with smart black shoes ~ these can be black trainers providing they are smart, however from september they are changing to a new uniform ~ I have two there already and one going up

The new uniform will be

boys: black trousers, White shirt, tie with logo, blazer with badge, Royal blue {black for us cos son yr 11} logo tank top {summer}/pullover {winter} and black brogue type shoes ~ one complete set price around £150 pounds for year 11 pupil {no spares}

girls: black skirt, white blouse, neck scarf with logo, blazer with badge, knee high white socks, crossbar black shoes and royal blue cardigan ~ one complete set £135 for year 9 pupil and £120 for year 7 pupil {no spares}

They are also looking a pe kits, sports/book/satchel bags and sunhats/caps all with logos

To me it seems silly when uniform is smart, inexpensive and easy to take care of to change now

PME, sons in sixth form and expected to wear uniform. Thing is he is six foot two and size eleven feet. He shaves every day because facial hair is not allowed (exceptions made for teachers of both sexes apparently.).
Other school in our area has a policy of sixth formers wearing a suit and tie, much cheaper... and much more popular.

My old high school phased in a strict uniform over five or so years, this meant no one really had to suddenly fork out for new or extra uniform. So when they introduced blazers, after they'd cracked down on everything else, I think year 11 (and possiably 10) were exempt.

I think very strict uniforms, such as speficying shoes or a cetian shade of shirt that can only be bought for an over the odds price at one shop are over the top.

One thing I will say is even though my old school became very strict on uniform, girls were allowes to wear trousers or skirts and in PE a gym skirt and knickers or shorts. There woudl have been a riot if the school had tried to make the girls wear skirts.

Seems like the schools enforcing a private school type uniform with little regard for what parents can afford (the shoe things actually what really gets me), shocked the board of governers hasn't intervened, hope they do on the possiable logo madness, sewing on a badge fair enough but insisting on items with logo's on espically when I bet some children will be bigger than the standard uniform size will cause problems,

Well my two have a Navy blue polo shirt with the schools name embroidered on it. They are £8. Their sweatshirts are also Navy with the school badge on and range from £12-£16. They wear black trousers. They are NOT allowed to wear trainers except for PE and their socks must be black. The 6th form wear what they want.
It's practical and fairly smart although not as smart admittedly as a blazer, shirt and tie.

I agree there should be school uniform,so the children are the same whatever background they come from.I t must be very difficult for parents who are badgered by their children for the latest fashion item ,that everyone else has but them!!!!!!!

It cost me an absolute fortune as the school also insisted on a certain type of outdoor coat etc etc, yet for me, yes ... they should wear a school uniform.

When you go to school you go to work, when you're in your own time, you can wear what you want. That's how I was brought up.

Wore it in 6th Form too, a different colour from the lower years, twas nice too, navy blue with a white blouse.

My daughter being a prefect has a different coloured polo shirt and her sweatshirt has a light blue line around the neck. In total I can fit them out for around £60 each with the 'must have' shirts and jumpers form school. And the sizes go way up into the adults range.

Sons school uniform... High school 1st year (sorry can,t get my head around this yr 8-9 etc) he was 14 .. The Blazer has Blue ribbon sewn around the sleeves. PE kit is a certain colour. Year 2 of high school blazer does not have ribbon and different PE kit. Girls wear blouses in blue and white pin stripe , they can only be bought from one school shop.
6th form blazer with different badge , new tie only can be bought from one shop.his school used to be a Grammar school until the late 70,s
Other son , different school.. same uniform throughout and just a suit and tie for sixth form.. This school was the comprehensive in the late 70,s.

I think on the whole they're a good idea - as long as they're comfortable and affordable, and available frommore than one outlet.
Why do some schools still insist on ties? How many of you ladies wear a tie?
At my daughter's school they dropped the summer uniform and even short sleeved shirts, so in the summer they had to wear the same as in the winter - long sleeved shirt, tie and blazer - but could 'drop' the jumper!
It was awful! the first summer it was very hot - and they had to wear ties and nasty nylon blazers.
Not exactly conjusive to learning - more like a torture.
