Went shopping this morning as OH returns to work Monday and I'll be stuck at home.

Well I didn't actually see a swarm of locusts but they had certainly been through the store.

No bread flour, which I needed, few potatoes, only packaged mushrooms etc., etc.,

I went to speak with a friend at customer services and she said someone had mentioned snow.

We live in Wales not bl**dy Siberia, youy only need a few days worth of fresh produce cos we are so near the coast that snow rarely sticks anyway.

So I was really grumpy by the time we got to the checkout.

I HATE shopping !

I do hope there will be enough left for us tomorrow.... R has loads, as there are two freezers full of scrummy stuff.... but not much really for me! Well, not much that is healthy for me now... loads of little treats that I can manage when I've had chemo........ that's my excuse, and I am sticking to it, lololol!! ;¬)))

Hello All - As you can see from my name I am in Derbyshire, and at lunch time today ,the Met. office released a warning for Derbyshire and Staffordshire with a predicted 5-10cm, not inches , of snow, for Monday and Tuesday, in the lower areas where I live, not the Peak District.
Now, I know it is only Friday teatime, and I am not doing my Mo***S**'N's until tomorrow,. but by then, everyone around here will have gone into a 'War has been declared mode' and everything will be on ration, or so they seem to think. Stock piling, will become the norm this weekend, with any activities suspended in favour of trawling all the big four supermarkets. A siege mentality will prevail with anything from s.paper to suet and beyond.
Being serious, we, in this country, only have to see a flake of snow, and everything seems to come to a standstill, and panic buying becomes the norm. Anyone remember 1946/7 and 1977/8

We are down to have a little bit of snow... but I live on a very flat bit of Wales... below sea level, actually... so am hoping we don't get too much. It is very pretty to look at, but I do not like to have to go out in it!!

Julia, I was in Germany 77/78... we had snow on the ground until about two weeks before my birthday at the end of June... first heavy fall was New Years Eve (party at the Mess was cancelled, so we had our own impromptu one... first footing in strappy sandals and strappy dress, carrying a cup of oil (no coal, you understand, lol) BUT... nothing stopped!! The roads stayed clear.. the pavements were all cleared (you have to clear your own bit by law) and the public transport system never even faltered!!

I remember heavy snow when I was about 8. in the early 60's.

I would like to see these morons living where you cannot rely on getting food (as per my son and nephew). You eat what is available in the shops, son gets chicken once a week in colder weather and that comes in on a bus. In the hot weather it's too dangerous to buy.

Nephew suffers shortages according to what the president declares what foods will be in short supply. You can only buy ONE x 5kg rice when it's actually available and he never knows when it will be available again.

I honestly think it's somewhat obscene and damn wasteful. How much of the fresh food over purchased will be thrown away?

To learn the art of stock pilling you have to adopt a 'War has been declaired/Seige' mentality. Grab everything, even if you don't use it. And please do not forget that the Co-op will always have a shipment of bananas, and you can tell your neighbours over the fence Les Dawson fashion.
Please, this is said very much 'tongue in cheek'. I have seen queues on the day before Christmas for bread, pork pies, sausage rolls, etc at our local bakery. For goodness sake, every one has a freezer these days.

Hi Sue,

Bella Donna's post about winter of '63 made me smile. Like her I wasn't quite born (!) but tales of that winter have been passed down from parents and grandparents.
We live in the country and our lane was completely blocked, so my Dad(legend has it) had to walk along the tops of the hedges to get to the shop to buy food. I swear nobody's nose grew when they told this story so I'm assuming it was true!!!!!

I'm always amazed at the panic-buying of bread/milk etc when we get an inkling of poor weather on the way.

Edit: Though I'm sure I did read somewhere that stock-piling of chocolate is a very good thing to do........................ ;)

Well........I always do my weekly shop on a Friday anyhow........and I buy what I need for that week......in all seriousness this week was no different.....though I do have a well stocked freezer as I buy meat in bulk at the farmers market. Plus I make my own bread and always have tonnes of ingredients to hand for that.........if the chickens are laying too we could live perfectly well on that alone lol

As long as the children have plenty of milk....we get through gallons ....it's still their drink of choice and the dogs, cats, rabbit, guinea pigs and chickens have what they need......I don't really care.

I'd be miffed if the snow comes and snows me in on Weds though........as i'd be perilously close to running out of vino LOLOLOL xx

Dormouse, the stories you have heard are TRUE! This was done by my OH that year, 8miles, to get our weekly shop. Snow was at the side of the rd until June, hereabouts. Since then, living down a long drive, had snow which made it impossible to get the car out for 6 weeks. Had to arrange to be picked up at the top of a mile long drive, to go to work.

MrDaff Report 30 Jan 2009 19:23

Dormouse.... it was true, lol... my dad was away... I was 8, my mum was pregnant (not sure which sibling, at the moment, lol) and also had half a dozen of us at home.. we didn't have a fridge, and not a lot of money... food was bought in on a day to day basis... I had to walk on snow banked up to the tops of the railings of the local school fence... about 6ft high.. to get to the shop each day to get the basics of bread and potatoes... the butchers wife used to take me out the back and warm me up before letting me go back out.... but... I always went back with some sausages, or a rack of lamb, or stewing steak, liver etc tucked into my bag.....

Meanwhile my dad was enjoying himself stuck in London at a *works do* in a posh hotel...still never quite forgiven him for it.... everything the shops gave me was *on tick* except the meat... which was slipped in by the butcher's wife.

I hate the cold to this day!! I had dreadful chilblains for a few years after.... and pneumonia.
