four minutes if it's a big one

Bobtanian Report 27 Jan 2009 18:05

if the potato is fairly large, wrap it in damp tissue, and cook on full power for about 6 minutes, turning it over and then doing it again........its really trial and error, depending on its power rating!! good luck, Bob

ooooooooooooooppss!
write 500 times I MUST read all the thread before replying.............

Depends on size of potato and power of microwave.
I usually put an average size potato that they sell for baking in for ten minutes (turning half way through and don't forget to stab it first!!) then 10 - 15 mins in oven.
Sometimes they are better than others, but when you are not a good cook you become less bothered!!

Now I fancy a jacket with my favourite filling - cottage cheese, coleslaw and shredded beetroot - maybe not a good idea having had a tooth outh this afternoon!!

EDIT Looking at other replies reckon it's trial and error here - and depends how soon you want to eat.

Karen, please warn your daughters not to use anything like tupperware in the microwave. back in 1978 my son thought he would be clever, he was 11 and being looked after by his 16 year old sister, microwave quite new, I was at work. He put some jelly sweets into a tupperware bowl to melt them. sugar gets very hot, when he lifted the bowl out it melted, to prevent it making a mess he instinctively put out his hand to catch the drips, which were a combination of melted plastic and boiling sugar. We were back and fro to the hospital (I got called home from work by daughter, luckily only 5 minutes away) for a week while he had the palm of his hand dressed.

A lesson learned the hard way!

OMG welcome to the 21st Century, I use my microwave for all sorts of stuff, I start my potatoes in the microwave, (prick the skin first) then I rub with olive oil and finish off in a hot oven.

Microwaves are great so quick, my favourite is microwave meringues and such fun to make,

Mrs BE Please give us the recipe for microwave meringues. Didn't know you could do that.

If doing baked spuds I just prick skin and bung spud in for a few mins - time depends on size of spud. Once I reckon it's nearly soft enuff it goes in oven to finish off and to get the skin crisp.

If I'm doing roast spuds and/or roast parsnips I parboil them in MWave then smear them with a little goose fat then cook in oven in normal way for about 30-40 mins.

oooooooh Ann thats sound nasty.....E did burn her arm on it but only very slightly.

well i did my spuds in there but they're just not the same.......i think it may spend more time gathering dust than being used.............the last one we had was a wedding present(17yrs ago) and i never used it so gave it to one of my sis in laws,

I find it handy if I am in a hurry or if i don't want the oven on for ages just for the potatoes. Mainly mine is used for re-heating. Usually veg, baked beans etc. although i do poach eggs in it.

Oh sorry, half a brain here tonight

Icing sugar,
one egg white,

really simple mix icing sugar into egg white, keep on mixing until you can add no more, you end up with a stiff lump, roll it into marble sized pieces place them on kitchen roll and nuke em on full power.
I can't remember how long for, (not long) but watch them as they do their thing, (I won't tell you what, it would spoil the fun) they are ready when you peel them off the kitchen roll and they are dry underneath.

BEWARE you are heating sugar and it gets frelling hot, also if you overheat them they burn in the middle and they stink..

Do have a go they are really simple, quick and such fun.

Hope that helps

Microwave Meringues (I make them too)

1 egg white
10-11 ounces of icing sugar (MUST be icing sugar)

Gradually add the sugar to lightly beaten egg white.

Roll into 32 little balls.

Cook on greaseproof paper in 4 batches of 8 at a time (I arrange them in a circle).

Cook each batch for one and half minutes on high (if a very high power microwave it may be a little less).

Easy and they keep well in a tin.

Scrambled egg is the best done in the microwave. Mix it up in a bowl and cook it on full power, stopping every so often to stir it and mix it up until it is ready. Light and fluffy, doesn't stick to dish and you have no yucky pan to wash :-)
