NOW how's about a GHB that is a Get Home Bag. If you had to leave your car and get home.. a lot of us wear unsuitable footwear for walking any distance, so bag in the boot could contain.

Walking shoes & socks
Waterproof clothing
Extra jumper
Trousers
Water
Torch (spare batteries)
Food.
Money for landline phones
First aid kit
List of important phone nos. (in case you can't access mobile)

Anything else you might consider necessary..

All packed in a rucksack to be easy to carry.

Be Ready!
Pack an Emergency Kit and keep it handy, this can be useful for all emergencies. It should contain:

First Aid Kit;
Contact numbers of family & friends;
Important documents such as photocopies of insurance certificates;
Spare set of warm clothes;
A battery powered radio;
Torch;
Bottled Water;
Emergency Food for 3 days, including special food for dietary requirements or babies.

If you live near a major industrial site you may have received specific public information regarding the local risk; make sure you read and understand the specific emergency arrangements.

Flooding
A predictable hazard in Gloucestershire is flooding in well known areas around the rivers Severn, Wye and Avon; check if you are at risk on the Environment Agency website or call Floodline on 08459 88 11 88.

If you are at risk:
Make a plan of action considering:
What preparations can you make beforehand (e.g. install products to prevent water coming in, property & contents insurance);
What will you do if flooding threatens - Make a checklist of things to do;

Evacuation
Cleaning up after a flood
Contamination
Drying out
Health Issues
Repairs
Helpful contacts

Anne I wouldn't let it frighten you, I think it is a good idea, if you had a bag with important contact numbers. any medication, glasses, waterproofs anything you couldn't be without plus a book and some snacky things. The site mentioned at the begining has more ideas. You could scoop it up and continue out of the door..

It isn't only flooding or hurricanes that may cause you to have to leave your home, think , Buncefield, what if a tanker containing chemicals overturned in your area. The car bag could have been useful in London when the bombs went off etc etc

This is not meant to be scary we had a water leak in our road recently and had to put some water in jugs etc, what if we had had no warning. At least with a couple of litres of bottled water we could have had a cup of tea...

having just looked at the site it could either frighten you to death or make you think what a very good idea. I suppose if we lived in the States where they have hurricanes etc we wouldn't think anything of it. However, think how an emergency pack stored upstairs could have helped the victims of the floods a year or so ago. I would think a basic emergency pack would be a good idea if you were in an area prone to flooding.
