Hi, has anyone any advise for the prevention/treatment for colic.

we have tried infacol/colileaf ect nothing works. Doc won't give anything as he is only 3 weeks old.

Homeopathy has reccommended fennel seeds in a cup of bioling water when cooled to give a few drops of the juice not seeds, it's apparently fantastic. Has anyone heard of this?

Any other tips will be appreciated.
I'm off to work wil look in later.
Thanks guys.

Ask the health visitor to show you some baby massage techniques, this was the only thing that helped my youngest who suffered really badly from colic.

You can get a baby fennel drink which my daughter used on her little one, it was in pellet form and mixed with water, i think she got it from boots

Yes, we used the fennel seed method for our little one. It was an indian grandma who was visiting her daughter in my maternity ward who told us about it.

I checked with the midwife first who confirmed it would be ok. We put a teaspoon of sugar in the fennel/hot water mixture. Keep it in a sterilised medicine bottle in the fridge and it will last a week.

Because it is only one teaspoon of sugar over the course of a week it is ok, and it is the sugar which helps to clear the colic as much as the fennel.

Carring the baby helps so often its best to buy a baby carier but I would use it outside coz if mum falls ..............

warm boiled water before a feed
rocking baby on your knee with baby laying flat on his tummy

Anti clic bottles are good but seem to remember you useing them .........

some bottles are plastic bags insisde a tube ....so you make the milk then squeeze the bag until the air is out ..then feed baby

patting babys bottom can simulate heart beat and calm baby .

rocking in pram car or arms !!! hard work

have you tried gripe water ...not as good but works for some babys ....

It is also important for mum to watch her diet if she is breast feeding.

I am afraid that I don't have any advice but my heart goes out to you!
My daughter had colic from three weeks old ( I tried just about everything, didn't know about fennel then though) she cried from 11am until 6pm every day, we were both exhausted, she lost weight, the doctor thought she had an intolerance to formula ( this wasn't the case) the health visitor was a waste of time, I was desperate and at 10 weeks I put her on solids, she thrived....the health visitor was horrified when she did her 'home visit', but alternative would have been far worse, I was at breaking point.

Keeping everything crossed that the fennel works for you,

Try an osteopath .........about £40.00 but often works as the birth can be the cause ......

KempinaPartyhat Report 6 Nov 2008 09:34

Tin fields ...thats what we did put baby on solids coz we could listen to the crying .......my dad did it !! I was cross but it shut baby up ....

And baby was 5 weeks every time I gave him milk he cried and screamed ..doctor said it wasnt the cows milk ...we never got any answers

use a low lactose milk powder ......cow and gate is the lowest on the open market and if your health visitor cant help then try that .........

I took my daughter off tinned milk and onto cows when she was 3wks old. Never looked back.

My grandson had colic and she used Infacol/Infracol.
Have you tried boiled water a spot of sugar in it.

It lasts til they are 3months old.

Such a sore thing for a baby to have, and upsetting for the mother because you feel useless, and it's very frustrating.

Hope you get a solution that works soon.

I used to use gripe water, always Woodwards as any other make was vile, we used gripe water fom about 10 days old, we also did gentle tummy rub as well as laying him on his tummy across my knees so as to extend the tummy to release the wind head tilted up, it calmed my son down, you don't say if you are feeding yourself or formula? also is your baby constipated or the other way?
Is your baby a sicky baby? my lad was and he was the only one who had colic.

Hi Irish girl
is this baby breast or bottle feeding.
does he have frequent wet nappies and brightyellow poo.
is he gaining weight?.
Is he uncomfortable during a feed or afterwards.
Does he give a bit of a cough after a feed
Is he happy being carried around or does he cry anyway
there are heaps of variables,pm me with as much info as you can and I will try and help you work through them.

When my daugher was a baby I never put her over my shoulder and pat her back to "wind" her - I had read somewhere that it was only something the western culture did. When she had finished feeding I would just lay on her front across my lap for a while before putting her in her cot - she never had colic.

Well I say never - she did once after ,my mum had looked after her and she had done the burping over the shoulder thing with her. lol

All I can say is do what my daughter did - dump the baby with g.parents each weekend! g.son nearly 20 and I remember with horror the day and night colic from 3 mths. We took the baby to give them some sleep at weekends whilst here, OH, myself and son took it in turns - tried everything changed from breast milk, to different types of food, different bottles, different teats, goats milk, bottles with plastic liners. I thought colic usually came at around 3 months - fingers crossed for you.
