So, it looks as if the Elizabeth that died in 1768 may have been Elizabeth King. But that means William may have had children with Elizabeth Brothers for a few years before they married in 1774.

Oh these Williams and Elizabeths are giving me a headache LOL.

~Summer Scribe~ Report 11 Nov 2008 17:02

Hmm, now when I did the original run through on IGI.

I had Martha d of William & Elizabeth
William (1738) s of William (1714)
William (1714) s of William (1687 or 1690)
William (1687 or 1690) s of Jonathan.

The contact that I have, who is descended from Martha's sister, claims that her father was 1714 she does say that Elizabeth (King) dies and then marries again so that fits with that last marriage you found, I think. But I do doubt about Elizabeth King because according to her she had Martha at 43 and then had two more children. While having a child at 43 I can get, I find it unlikely she had more after that. *goes back to look at the deaths you found* Like I said, if only they'd had unique names LOL.

Once again, thank you for your help :-)

Hummmmm..

Now I have gone back further I am now wondering if that William(1730 s Henry)is the right one!!

There is
Marriage 03 August 1676 at North Hinksey
Jonathon BELCHER of W.Hanney
Ann DEW of E. Hanney

Jonathon had the following children baptised at E.Hanney (he is described as a yeoman)
There is no mention of Ann!

01 Sep 1684-Jonathon
19 Sep 1686-William (bur 1686)
04 Jan 1690-William
26 Jul 1691-Richard
02 Aug 1696-Anne
14 Feb 1698/9-Henry
26 Nov 1701-Hannah (bur 1701)
19 Jan 1709-Elizabeth

There is a marriage 10 March 1730 at Wantage
Richard BELCHER-30-yeoman-of Hanney
Martha SLATER-24 of Hanney

They has the following children baptised at Hanney(again no mention of the mother!)
30 Jan 1731/2-Marey
01 Apr 1733-Anne
28 Dec 1734-William

There are no more baptisms for Richard.

I will see if he/and or Martha are in the buriel index.

I am wondering if this William (1734) is the one who married Elizabeth KING in 1753?

The names of the children suggest it might be.

What do you think?

Oh-- yes-- I found another marriage:-
20 July 1774 at Hanney
William BELCHER wid
Elizabeth BROTHERS wid

)got this from the Wiltshire Marriage Bonds and Licences and the bondsman for the licence was....William Belcher!!)

LOL Margaret, I do it far too often, thankfully only in non-important ways.

Elizabeth, thank you so much for your hardwork, you're doing a great job, wish I could get my head around it LOL.

2 years is quite long and it's weird that none of the sons were named William. Of course, we can speculate about having a baby elsewhere or whatever but it's not relevant, I guess.

Thanks.

No,there are no baptisms for William & Elizabeth prior to the 1755 one and not one under KING either.

I had looked as I thought the gap between the marriage and the first child was unusually long for those days!!

I am looking to see if,by going back further, there might be a clue as to who the various William's are I will let you know when I post the results!

Quite enjoying it!

Checking back I realised that the transcripts are from April to March before 1754 and therefore the baptism of William in January 1729 was 1729/30
I feel sure he is the right William it is just the Elizabeth's that are a puzzle!!

~Summer Scribe~ Report 4 Nov 2008 19:06

I wonder if William and Elizabeth King had an illegitimate son called William (?King) before they married, it seems odd that he wouldn't call one of his (first) sons William, don't you think? Would it be possible to check that, please?

Thanks

Thank you so much, you've worked incredibly hard. I didn't see this yesterday. I'll sift through and see what shakes loose.

It would look like Martha is the daughter of William and Elizabeth King, but what concerns me is that as you say, she was born in 1723 and that would make her 43-4 when she had Martha; not unheard of I know, but increasingly unlikely.

So very confusing.

Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it :-)

Still not going be easy!!

The registers for East Hanney and West Hanney are combined at this time and just say E.H or W.H (or nothing!)

There are 3 marriages which could be relevant:

24 April 1753 at West Hanney
Willaim BELCHER
Elizabeth KING

20 June 1764 at East Hanney
Willaim BELCHER
Betty HEARMAN

12 August 1770 (not defined)
William BELCHER
Elizabeth HIGGS

I think the East Hanney one can be left as she was baptised as Betty but they do seem to be in W /Hanney as well and Esther (1776) was baptised d William & Elizabeth E/Hanney!!

Baptisms - William & Elizabeth W/Hanney
02 Jun 1755-Robert
10 Feb 1757-James
04 Feb 1759-Richard
04 Jun 1761-Richard
12 Apr 1762-Daniel
22 Apr 1764-Elizabeth
20 Jan 1767-Martha

02 Sep 1770-Ann
03 Mar 1771-Thomas
14 Feb 1773-Elizabeth
26 Feb 1775-William
22 Sep 1776-Danial
28 Sep 1777-Mary & Sarah twin d Will & Eliz W/H
20 Feb 1780-Henery was admitted into the church
04 Aug 1782-Martha d ? & Elizabeth
03 Aug 1783-Charles
18 Dec 1785-Robert
19 Oct 1788-James
22 Jan 1792-Joseph
19 Oct 1794-Charles

I have left a gap because it seems likely that there are 2 Elizabeth's but ? just the one William

The only Elizabeth King in the transcripts was baptised at W/Hanney 01 Dec 1723 d Richard
This would make her 30 when she married

There is a buriel 14 July 1768-Elizabeth w William-no age given!

I left a gap because I wonder if the William who married in 1770 was a widower and the children that followed had a different mother?

Unfortunatley it does not say in the transcripts but the actual registers may.

Elizabeth HIGGS was baptised at W/Hanney 23 Feb 1751 d Richard & Elizabeth

A buriel for William BELCHER at W/Hanney 06 Jan 1803 age 83 fits with a baptism for William 28 Jan 1729 s Henry

(there is also 22 Oct 1726 William s Michael!!)

More buriels
02 Apr 1768-Thomas s William
17 Mar 1769-Betty d William
19 Jan 1784-William (no age given)
04 Apr 1797-Sarah 19
01 Aug 1799-William 50 (cannot see a bapt!)
24 Jan 1809-Robert 24
18 Apr 1809-Elizabeth 69
25 Nov 1811-Charles 17
27 Nov 1815-Elizabeth 44
05 Jul 1816-Elizabeth 64
25 Jan 1837-James 80

The buriel transcripts only go to 1784 but I have the Berkshire Buriel Index as well

Let me know if you want anything more

Sorry for the delay!

I have Longworth too

Marriage 26 October 1788 at Longworth
James THATCHER b
Martha BELCHER sp
Wit=James Belcher/Thomas Bennett

The Belcher's go back to the late 1500s in Hanney!

I will do the rest tomorrow

~Summer Scribe~ Report 2 Nov 2008 15:15

LOL Margaret. I know, you get so caught up dealing with the 1800's don't you?!

Elizabeth...me too. PMSL.

Ok, serious head on.

First of all I'm looking for a marriage between Martha BELCHER and James THATCHER but you might not have that as it's Longworth in 1788.

Martha Belcher was born 1766 in West Hanney. IGI has her father as William and mother Elizabeth. Unfortunately it seems there are lots of William's and Elizabeth's around there at that time. So, I need to make sure I get the right ones. I'd like to know who her siblings were (and who were cousins).

According to IGI there are William's in 1737 (father william), 1714 (father william), 1690 & 1687 (both father's are Jonathan). The rellie that contacted me is convinced 1714 is Martha's father, but that means he was really getting on when she was born (if her research is right then the 'right' Elizabeth was born in 1724 and they then had another 2 kids after Martha, I just really need to confirm all this)

Thank you for your help :-)

Hey Sumner, what a laugh! I recently completed an application for a new job, with details of previous experience, and when I printed it off I had put 1868-1872, Nat West Bank, 1872-1890 Ferodo Limited!

My hubby was once miffed cos I remember a relly of his that he had his birthdate wrong, I told him it was 1846 not 1848!

You may need to order the film into your local Church of Latter Day Saints. You might/should find father's occupation and an address (hopefully a reasonable sort of address and not just some village or area!). That ought to help a bit - even if not with all of them at least with some ...

Good luck!!
