It's shocking that anyone could do something so horrendous to a defenceless old lady like that. I remember when I was in my late teens, my nanna was burgled while she was upstairs in bed. Fortunately, the little thug didn't go upstairs or get violent, but she never felt safe in her own home again and it took her a long time to feel comfortable. It turned out he had committed a string of similar burglaries and was arrested for aggravated burglary, if I remember right he was under 18 and was given something like 6months in a young offenders institute.

Sentencing in this country is completely out of proportion with the crimes and there are people that never see prison for something like this even though convicted.

I'm not going to make excuses for the little shit, but, there are usually warning signs that have gone unheeded and not always by uncaring parents. I would never use abuse as a reason, because there are plenty of well-adjusted abuse survivors out there and I think it belittles them to blame that. However, the one thing that comes to mind is foetal alcohol syndrome and the way it can affect development of conscience. I am in no way condoning though because there would have been indicators and nothing had been done, had it been done then that poor brave lady would not be in the situation she is.

Bev, I am in awe of the job yourself and people like you do. It must be infuriating and frustrating at times like this.

I think some people may not have replied simply because any emotive topic can so easily deteriorate into a very nasty slanging match here on GR.

I have tremendous respect for nurses and I have a lot to be thankful for after all the hospital treatment my husband has received over the years. I could tell when I met you Bev that you are a caring person and I am not surprised that this case has affected you so much.

There was a very heated debate on hanging on this site quite a while ago and I stated my opinions on it then. They haven't changed.

What has happened to this poor elderly lady is dreadful and if someone had done this to someone I cared about then I would want to do them some harm in return.

But that would be revenge and we need judgements to be done by those who are not seeking revenge.

Most of us on GR have done enough family and social history to know how severe punishments for even minor crimes were in the past.
If harsh punishments had worked it ought to follow that the past would have been a safer place to live.

I also haven't seen any evidence that capital punishment acts as a deterrent in countries which still use it.

I've no easy solutions to offer but I still can't agree that hanging (or any form of capital punishment) is the answer.

Hoping you get a good night's sleep and thinking of the poor old lady and those who love her.

Sue
