This is from a page full of those intending to change their names in 1944 from the London Gazette online which is free to search and download. Entering your surname may bring up some surprising results. I found a couple of my OH's, one in the Airforce 1936 and another made bankrupt 1899. He went from being a store owner to an assistant. I haven't started on my names yet :-)

I just found my Great Great Grandfather had a Patent accepted in 1863 for the invention
of "improvements in apparatus for steering
ships and vessels."......didn't expect that!


If CC looks in...as you have an unusual name...maybe the Clissold who also invented something is one of yours :-)))

Lol I am on a roll with the London Gazette

1870
I have just found his brother who moved to Leeds and was a
Tailor.... his invention.....

for the invention of " improvements
in the manufacture of wearing apparel
such as coats, vests, trousers, jackets, shirts,
drawers, and other similar articles."

The mind boggles if he had any influence on what people wore. Mind you....other documents state that he was made bankrupt in the same year.....maybe it was the £50 that had to be paid to the patent office.


This all goes to prove that it is worth searching. I had no idea about any of it.

Am searching Bradbury Tansley and Holding although Holding is a bit difficult as I get every page with the word Holding as well

Try adding the full name to the middle box at the bottom where it says 'With the exact Phrase'

in the advanced search ( top right )


I have just emailed my children my findings.....should have known better than to have expected them to whoop with joy at their ancestors achievments......all I got from both of them was.....'Does that mean we are rich then?' and then proceeded to give me a list of wants disguised as needs.

Tsk!.....they don't get it from me....honest :-)))))

Will have a look at that later. Don't hold up a lot of hope though, my lot never appear in these interesting publications. OK so I am feeling pessimistic this morning, will go ad have breakfast and give myself a talking to.

Aww Ann.....If it is any consolation I never dreamed I would find so much info on my lot.....just thought they would all be poor and boring....so I didn't even bother when I saw the words Gent or any occupation higher than something as low as an ameoba ( I have many of them lol )....I also didn't expect to find anything in the Newspapers.....I just like reading them......so Ok my lot were made Bankrupt this time......but maybe that is why a lot of our ancesters 'were' poor.....we only usually get to see the census and never really know what happened in between. I just know you will break down your brick wall some day.

Try Durham as a keyword as well as the name

If they were made bankrupt, divorced, died intestate, were in the forces patented an invention etc it covers the whole country

Many thanks for posting this information on the London Gazette - I shall take a look as soon as I can.

Ref: your g.g.grandad who had a Patent granted...I wonder if you would be able to get a copy of the Patent Application and/or Granted Patent which would give you lots more information on his product. That might prove an interesting document to add to your family history. The people on the central enquiries desk at the UK Patent Office, now known as the UK IPO, are extremely helpful. The UK IPO is in Newport, South Wales and their phone numbers are 0845 9500 505 and 01633 814000.
You need to specify that it's an Archive Patent you are interested in, and give as much info as you can , ie g.g.grandad's name, title of patent, date of patent application, date of granted patent, etc.
