toy whilst in sunny Wales to be wrapped and labelled for my first g.gchild! Expected perhaps in next 8 to 10 years! This toy so reminded me of the happiness a similar one gave to me as a child - he is so smart, he has a waistcoat and a tailcoat and has striped trousers - can you guess?

Teddy,Golly and Goldilocks doll, my favourites. because they were all cuddly.

Gollywog is a no-no but think you get away with Golly....By the way black friends of mine think the PC brigade are hilarious and totally out of touch but then a lot of the PC brigade arent black lol. As well as Golly I had a black collie dog as a child called Nigger again these days not acceptable.

As a black doll has been mentioned - I too had one she was named Topsy - however my father told me she was black as not only had she been bought in Blackpool but that she was born in the blackout! Topsy had long gone when my g.daughter wanted a black doll. Word went out to friends and family when you are travelling and see a black doll please buy it - after about 18 months her gdad and I found one - in Lubeck, Germany! In the eighties we travelled quite a bit and on three occasions found myself in various parts of Africa and then the Caribeean during the Christmas run-up and the shops all decorated - lots of dolls and not a single black one. I found that so weird. I hope this g.gchild in the future appreciates the Golly!

I had a pair of black dolls, the reason being that I wanted a Boko doll.

It seems that was a pair of conjoined twins born or seperated who had come from somewhere in Africa and one of them was called Boko.

Somehow I had latched on to this name and wanted a Boko doll so was given the twins for Christmas.

It must have been the mid to late fifties.Does anybody else remember the baby Boko.

Chris, i still have a black baby doll that belonged to my mother, and it's also called Topsy! How funny. It's arms and legs are a bit loose these days and the two front teeth are sinking.

The doll came from Canada in the 30's where some of Mum's family had emigrated to.

I remember Boko and her sister Tomo. They came from West Africa and their father was employed by a Unilever company .Unilever paid for them to come over and they stayed in Holland Park in a Company owned house where visiting managers stayed.
I was working in Unilever House Blackfriars at the time and remember seeing the parents coming in to visit . The mum wore traditional colourful clothes with the matching swathed turban. They were a little overwhelmed with all the publicity. Unfortunately Tomo didn't survive the surgery but Boko went home with her parents.
