Ros,

I buy mine every year at the school fayre in December from a lady know as "sweet Marilyn" who bakes..with a fairy's touch..but no brandy butter as I prefer Devon custard.

Ros............an addiction indeed.........lol

34 years for me.........lol.........the only year I have missed was 1990 , as I'd been in a road accident and couldn't have made it that year if I'd have wanted to.

I found out that one of my G.Grandfathers was a " Master Baker"........perhaps that is where my urge to bake " the Great Cake " comes from..........lol

I've made them every year since I was at school. Famous for my rich fruit cakes I am! ;o)

This year I only have 6 to make though. One for son & his family, one for daughter & her family, one for daughter's friend, one for OH's bachelor friend (made one every year for him since his Mum died), one for a man I used to work with (who's ex hated fruit cake) and one for us.

Thought I'd have to make one for the hamper that's being raffled to raise funds for our Village Hall, but my friend is doing it instead. My cakes taste better than hers, but she decorates them better than I do! LOL I'm making a sponge snowman cake instead ;o)

My recipe is from long before Delia!!! It's my mother's ,and she was a lovely cake and pastry maker.
Over the last years of her life I made her one as well, and of course it had to come up to her standards.
I buy my marzipan though these days, but ice them myself.

I have given up making my own as I always burnt them.
I don't even bother buying one now as no-one eats them.OH always buys a Dundee Cake at Xmas ! No idea why as we don't eat that either .Every few years I have to chuck out xmas pudds,as we don't eat them either. So why do we buy them???????Tradition!!!!!!!!!!!!
I buy Dates at xmas too .No-one likes them.I do it because that's what I had as a child.Turkish Delight, lemon and orange slices, oooh I could go on.
