I was thinking this morning, as I was withdrawing £100 from a cash machine - who is watching me, who has seen me put that in my handbag. I was clutching the bag so hard as I trundled around the town.

I sometimes feel annoyed as the announcements in supermarkets keep telling you to keep your purse in your hand, not on the trolley. I want to shout that I am doing that!

I know to my cost the folly of hanging a handbag on the front of the trolley from about 5 or more years ago. I parked the trolley after unloading my shopping and left it there. Some evil person took it, not back to the customer services desk. I lost quite a lot of money, all cards, irreplaceable photos and my eternity ring. I realised within moments but ended up with new cards, new locks on doors, plus Mum-in-law's doors, family allowance book and so much more. (The family allowance book showed my address.) OK, thinking about it, it was much more than 5 years ago - the children are long grown, and one married. How time flies!!

Check your statements, my sister very rarely checks hers did last week found some one had used her account 3 times first time in august for a pound to a charity then 99 pounds in September and again the same amount in october for on line shopping, bank will pay her back but all the hassles of getting new cards

Sorry to be the bearer of depressing news but We have just had our account debited by £2000. The bank phoned me on wednesday to enquire about a large transaction. It turns out that the scam is Key Stroke Robbers and the bank details have been extracted from our computer.
We have been told by the bank that we will be reimbursed and that they are on to the investigation. Meanwhile our account is frozen.

Sorry to hear about this Joan, but good that your bank alerted you and that you will get the money back.
I had to cancel one of my cards yesterday - I had ordered something online (only about £20), and the money went out of my account the day after my order.
Then Thursday I suddenly realised the goods hadn't arrived, so emailed the company.........no response! Then yesterday spent all morning trying to ring them - still no answer so went to bank and cancelled card.....just in case.
They had used a supposedly secure payment system called protx, which I have never heard of.
No other money had been taken from my account, but you just never know these days.

I mentioned this before, we have ALL our cards insured for a flat fee of £29.00 pa against fraud. The policy gives us immediate access to £1,000 until the cards have been re-issued and we are reimbursed for any fraudulent transactions.

Check with your main bank for details.

When we returned from holiday we had a message on phone to ring a number at the bank as card had been used fraudently. I did not ring this number but used the no to contact bank which was on my statement. It turned out that there had been no adverse use of my card and no one had rung from the bank. Explanation that it was some sort of scam to get us to ring given no and give bank details to some scamster. Do not give details to any one who rings claiming to be bank but put phone down and ring bank on no on statement is what I was told to do.

We didn't give our details to anyone. When the bank phoned me they asked if I had recently made a large transaction I said that I hadn't. Then I phoned my OH and told him. He phoned our bank and was put through many departments which verified the details.
It does make you wary, as we were targeted two years ago with a £900 spend on OH's card. That was traced back to a petrol station strangely enough; my friend also had her card fraudulently cloned at the same petrol station too.
Please beware and especially at this time of year. You could be buying other peoples' christmas presents. Check your statements.

well OH card was used to pay off some scammers credit card, but bank couldn't/wouldn't find them!!!

Petrol stations are notorious for skimming cards, so are restaurants, particularly Asian ones.

Don't let your cards out of your sight.

The point of chip and pin is that you don't actually let anyone even touch your card.

You put it in the machine, you type in your pin and you remove the card.

Should anyone even try to take hold of your card or even worse, try to take it out of your sight, then stop them and kick up a stink.

Hubby and I had about £2000, taken out of our joint account, sept 2007. We had checked tha account on the monday, to make sure enough in to cover outgoings - bills etc. On the Saturday, I checkedto see what had come out to find £5 and pence left. Went straight into branch, Found that the money had been taken out as cash (joint a/c is hole in wall card only) since the tuesday.
Cards were cancelld, had new ones delivered in 3 working days and monies refunded by the friday.
Altough we had debits and things bouncing, bank did not charge.
We check more frequent now.

it was a waiter in a local Indian restaurant in our village who used my son's card's details - he was caught - but my son went in the other local Indian restaurant the other day and the same chap was in there - I wouldn't say he went white when he saw my son, but he certainly looked a bit shaken up!!!!

Never use a debit card for online transactions. If money is taken from a credit card the onus is on the credit card company to prove you used it, if money is taken from your bank account the onus is on you to prove you didn't use it.

Ann, I hope your son told the owners about his reputation. I know they'd want to know if they were employing a crook. It could be really damaging to their business.
