Daff, I do too, it's the scientist in me, same with putting a line through a 7 to highlight it's not a 1 LOL

The reason there is a slash across it is to differentiate between an 0 (zero) and an O (capital letter o)

Europeans use it all the time, although less common over here.

Hubby always puts a slash through the number 0.. He was trained to use that by the military..... also a little line at the base of a 6.... to show that it is a 6 and can't be turned upside down and confused with a 9, lol

As Anita says, if it's a diagonal 'slash' then it's a zero

Bev... don't confuse me with questions like that.;-0)
An 'O' is a big enough problem for me.
When reading an address, is it an 'O' or a ZERO??

Vertically = Phi
Horizontally = Theta (although I think it's more a ~ than a -)

There are two greek letters that are O with a line either vertically or horizontally through them. They're not Omega though.
