Morning Jax yes I agree manners is more than the please and thankyou's. Altho' they are a good start.
part of manners is treating those around you with respect and consideration.

As you say nothing nicer than a bit of consideration ......wiping seats off for you.

It's all about making the world a nicer place for everyone really. I think manners is about being considerate and it really doesn't matter whether the person you are being pleasant to is male/female/young or old.

Sadly there are children growing up in homes where there is a lack of consideration for others.

I was walking in our shopping area of town a few days ago and a child was sitting in the back seat of a parked car while a woman was in the front passenger seat. The child (aged about 3 or 4) had been eating a packet of crisps and was in the process of pushing the remains of the packet and the wrapping out of the slightly open back window.

I picked up the packet as I walked past and took it to the front window and said to the woman "I think you want to take this home". She took it off me sheepishly but had a rather thunderous look as I looked back.

Little ones need to learn manners and consideration for others from a very early age and they learn by example.

Sue - lucky for her you weren't the local Litter Warden or she'd have had a nice fine as well as a thunderous look lol

I'll always hold doors open for the next person etc - step back on a narrow footpath to let someone thru and such like - but if i don't get any response to acknowledge my good manners, i just say to them - 'Don't mention it' or 'My pleasure' LOL ...........

Laughin lol!

I have just had to mind my manners ......

Cassius flew through our house ..... oh my word, what was that in his mouth ...... twas one of my best flip flop type shoes, white with a small kitten heel ....

He thought it very funny, dancing round, charging here there and everywhere with me chasing him ... norti dog, what is he like?!

Had to mind my tone, be firm yet polite ... won in the end but oh gosh, am puffed!

Yes, you guessed .... won when I stood still and took control using the voice I used for my son when he was small .... firm yet low. xxx

Maybe it sounds petty but it really grates with me when I hear someone just shout 'scuse me' without saying please. It sounds like an order rather than a request and these individuals rarely say thank you when you move for them. Like others on here have said good manners is showing consideration for others. Teaching children to be aware of the needs of others is badly needed these days and teaching good manners is a great introduction to this.

Hi Annx,

We were brought up in the knowledge that you were a representative of your own family no matter where you were.

Annx sometimes the s'cuse me is more of an order than a request but it's better than an elbow at times.
Was telling OH bout this thread and it made him realise what he does without thinking on it. Holding doors for the next person saying excuse me when passing by etc He says he don't think about it just natural.
He did say he holds me hand crossing the road and walks on the outside cos he can't trust me not to wander off lol

Annx Report 18 Sep 2008 14:00

Shimms you made me chuckle - my OH says mind the step now - ever since he walked ahead of me across a road and I fell forward grabbing the only thing in reach to stop me falling - the sides of his trousers, which nearly came down! He has good manners though, walks on outside, opens doors for people.

Ohhhh Annx, am laughin!

Me, I used to walk along in my high high heels, one minute I was there, the next I was gone! He still married me ..... :)

If he sees neighbours he will always stop, wish them good morning or similar, would think it rude even if he was in a hurry just to disappear into the house.

my two year old grandaughter makes me laugh.
she nearly always says thankyou, it is not very often you have to remind her to say please or thankyou but what does tickle me is for as long as she could talk she has always said 'you're welcome' if you say thankyou to her!
i think this is lovely and alsways makes others smile.
her newest phrase at the moment is 'just in case' to everything she does or says.
