You're welcome Barbara. :-))

Marion, I know exactly how you feel - you feel guilty at playing God don't you.
I've mentioned him here before now, but one of our 5, Pepper, lost a back leg 2 years ago after being hit by a car. Earlier this year he was diagnosed with Pancreatitis, we suspect as a result of the trauma. The vets say it's not curable and he's having medication but every now and then he has a turn, it's apparently very painful indeed.
He has regular bouts of nausea and lack of appetite; thank God for a drug called Zispin! It's an appetiser as well as anti-emetic which we give him every few days. Really peps him up!
We're monitoring him obviously, and when he shows us signs he's had enough, we'll call the vet to come to our house to do the deed.
In the meantime, he has quality of life so as long as he's happy, so are we.

Thanks Glenys

Will copy your poem and keep it it's so poignant, I have a little cat myself who was a stray and can't even think about what I'll be like when her time comes but hope I can do the right thing when I have to.

Oh that's selfish of the owner Glenys,that should be treated as a cruelty case.

One of the best bits of advice I've ever had was from my cousin.
She said " If you do the 'deed' then think 'oh they could have had longer you feel bad. If you leave it too late you feel even worse.You put it off because you will feel bad, but you have to think of your pet.

My cat was 15.In the May he took a wobbly turn had been fine till then,anyway to cut a long story short,he had lots of tests etc. turned out was his kidneys.,and toxoplasmosis.He was on lots of tablets and special diet.
He was due to get check up on the Mon 16th Aug.
I decided I would have the vet come to the house and put him to sleep.He agreed i was doing the right thing. But, they will carry on as long as they are getting money.

Yes he could have gone on longer but he was starting to lose weight,and to watch him take a turn was heart breaking.
The night before I gave his fav food etc.

My eyes are leaking as I write this as it still hurts like hell.But I did it for him.

You dont always know when they are really suffering, you just need to watch. Animal cop's Houston or Phenix or any of the vet programmes. some of them are very badly hurt,neglected or injured yet, they still wag their tails or purr.

Sorry for rabbiting on ;((

Hi Barbara, Blue, Helen and Marion, this is a poem hubby and I saw pinned to the notice board at our local vets, when we were taking a much-loved cat in for treatment in 1997 (kidney failure; old age).
I asked if I could take a photocopy, and it gave us a lot of comfort. :-))
I've mentioned it before on General, but won't hijack Dawnie's thread lol, about a cat we saw at the vets, with terminal nasal cancer, and the owner would not have him put to sleep, because she "loved him too much" ............... We (and the staff) were so angry about it; I came home and wrote about it and now have it on Word.
Sorry, waffling now .............

Barbara, you can talk! lol That's lovely.

Oh little doggie, I hope and pray
You perk up soon and have a lovely day
Your time might soon come to an end
But you will be there with your friend

Up in the sky you will go
To be reunited with friends you know
All little doggies, faces aglow
Are waiting for you, this we know

And so I say a prayer for you
God keep you safe and one day too
Your tail a wagging, you will meet
Your old mum waiting for you, with a treat

Glenys

You should leave a box of tissues beside that.
All very true,you got to think of your pets feeling's and not yours.
You feel bad when ever it happens :((

Dawn, I have to say what a fantastic family you all are. I know it's been printed out before, but this is very appropriate - and comforting, believe it or not!
(((HUGS))) to all of you.

A Pet’s Prayer

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle can’t be won.

You will be sad – I understand –
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand;
For this day, more than all the rest
Your love and friendship stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years,
What is to come can hold no fears;
You’d not want me to suffer so
When the time comes, please let me go.

Take me where my needs they’ll tend,
Only – stay with me till the end;
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will see
It’s a kindness that you do for me;
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.

Don’t grieve that it should be you
Who has to decide this thing to do;
We’ve been so close all through the years,
Don’t let your heart hold any tears.

well he has perked up a bit and eaten his dinner, been in the garden but walks a bit then falls over and cant get up.

He must be in kitchen now as have just heard his water bowl go flying across kitchen, poor old man cant see it so walks in it and then sits in it.

Will see how is is tomorrow but we have said if he is bad will do the dreaded deed as cant bear to see him suffer. He is going with children to my parents while we are away and they will take him to thier vets if he is bad while at theres and have even said they will bury him their garden if it happens when he is there.

And im just gullible for a sad story which is why he is with us, didnt offer to take him 1st time he was on the oldies sight and he was rehomed but she bought him back so 2nd time I really couldnt resist
