Ok, I had never heard of it until I moved to the North East coast 10 years ago.

Although we had a nice sunny weekend. Come around 4pm in it rolled. Then there is a mass exodos from the beach and terrible traffic jams on the roads.

Today we have not seen the sun at all, and most of the day, when you look out the window it looks like a foggy November day.

Who else has had Sea Fret for the last few days?

Jenny

Do you mean when you lose all visibility (like in the film The Fog?)

Saw it a couple of times in Tresaith W Wales. A bit scary..

We get it all the time. It varies in density but is a blooming pain. You get a mile inland and it disappears. We've had it all weekend.

It's strange when you've been inland on a nice day then you come home, it's like sleepy hollow. lol

Helen are you on the East Coast?
Apparently it is more frequent in the East according to 'Google'

Hi Jenny

We're a bit inland here but last year we went for a day out at the coast cos it was boiling here. By the time we'd got half an hour down the road it was thick with it. We sat on the beach all day with the kids in it and had to keep going to the water's edge with them cos we couldn't see them lol

Hi Jenny---yeah even get a bit of it in Drlington and the real term for it is a Haar---that's what its called up here
I remember often when we were kids and we got to the sea there was a fret----go inland and it's gone---but not today

We used to get it in West Cornwall and some days it was a nightmare. One winters night driving over the county from south to north coast it was so bad that I literally couldnt see the front of the car bonnet now that was scary

We get them along the south coast as well, although I've just called them sea mists.
One hot sunny day in Hove, OH and I decided to have a picnic on the beach (10 mins walk away). At the last minute he decided that rather than walking to the beach, we should drive to Camber Sands (45ish mins drive away). I had never been there, and he said how beautiful it was with the sand dunes compared to the pebble beach of Hove.

Well, we sat by the sand dunes and ate the picnic shivering from the cold. We couldn't see our hand in front of us, let alone the sea. That was my first and last time at Camber Sands.

Sorry folks, got a bit lost on Ancestry.

Thanks for all your replies. I find all this 'Sea Fret' fascinating. (Sp) Went out as far as the back door not long ago, and it is damp and foggy.

'Google' Sea Fret. It explains if fully.

It happens along the Bristol Channel sometimes too.

Not heard it called that before though.

Yes, sitting on Carbis Bay Beach in Cornwall....mist came in from the sea and rolled up the beach until you could not see 5 foot in front of you.......covered in cold damp cloud, and it was really eerie......then it seemed to just go and it became clear again....

We in south northumberland tend to call the Haar what you get after a thunder storm. x
