Snap......................shall we say it here then?

Cut out all animal fats and use semi-skimmed milk and low fat spreads.

The hospital dietician should be able to provide you with some factsheets of information too.

It is better to know what the problem is though Colin, this way you can be proactive in lowering your cholestrol to avoid health problems in the future.

Take care of yourself.

Hi Posh :):)

Thank you for your feedback :):) Now porridge is something I would gladly start my day off with :)

Ive been told not to eat so many eggs (I live of them ) and porridge would be a great substitute for breakfast :):)

Thanks Val :):)

I certainly have to change my ways :)

Fruit and Veg is something I lack in eating really. I have lived a life on dairy products, guess I was asking for something to happen

From the net.....

How can I reduce my cholesterol levels?

High cholesterol is a major factor of heart disease, but it can be treated through diet and exercise. The first step in lowering cholesterol levels is to change your diet. Most individuals can reduce their cholesterol level 15-20% by reducing the intake of foods high in cholesterol and fat, especially saturated fat.

Food to avoid or limit:

Fatty meats but if you do eat them cut off all the visible fat.
Sausages, goose and duck.
Pies and pastries.
Fat or oil in cooking.
Prawns, shrimp and fish roe.
Fried foods
Dairy products such as full milk, cream, cheese, butter and ice cream.
Egg yolks, limit to 2 a week.
Cakes, crisps, biscuits, sweets and chocolate.
Try to grill or steam meats instead of frying or roasting but if you do roast, place meat on a rack to allow the fat to drain off. When frying choose a vegetable oil, such as sunflower.

Healthier foods which you could try eating are as follows:

Fish, especially oil rich fish such as sardines, salmon, mackerel, pilchards and trout. This type of fish contains Omega-3 fatty acids and they are thought to lower LDL cholesterol.
Poultry (chicken, veal or turkey) but remove the skin.
Low-Fat dairy products, use semi skimmed or skimmed milk, low fat yoghurts and mono or poly-unsaturated spreads.
Foods high in polyunsaturated (found in nuts, seeds and vegetable oils) and monounsaturated (found in olive, rapeseed, walnut oil and avocado) fats.
Fruit and vegetables, you should eat at least 5 portions every day.
Garlic
Wholegrain breads
Cereals
Baked beans and red kidney beans
Pasta and rice
If buying low fat foods ensure they are labelled "low in saturated fat"

hi Colin, I didn't see the other thread so I assume you have a cholesterol problem. can I say that if you are offered statins take them. I tried the diet way to no avail, my cholesterol was almost 6. I have been taking a fairly low dose statin 20mg Simvastatin for 6 months and my HDL cholesterol is now 3.5 and the LDL is 1.5 so it has dropped considerably. tony too has to take statins and he only has a 10mg Simvastatin and his too immediately dropped right down

I should add we still stick to a low fat low dairy diet and always use benecol spread not butter.

Hi Colin - high cholesterol is not necessarily anything to do with what you eat. I was diagnosed with high cholesterol about ten years or so ago - I kept thinking I was having heart attacks - chest pains. Cholesterol was checked and was 9, so I asked GP not to give me tablets but said I'll sort it, I eat all the wrong things, so I cut out all the naughty things and one month later my cholesterol was 11.6!!!! I immediately went on Simvastatin and that was changed about two years ago to Atorvastatin. My high cholesterol is apparently called familial - one of my parents would have suffered from it. Had my annual check two weeks ago and it is 4.6

hi Anne, my doctor put me on 40mg simvastatin, but i dont think it agrees with me. ive felt really unwell since taking it, so its good to know lowering cholesteral can be done through a ghange of diet. thankyou, nite x
