At work this week I heard a student, my age, boasting that she was working on the sly for 2 weeks while on benefits and it would pay for her and the kids to have a holiday.

My OH and myself work and pay taxes and cant afford to go away. Would you have said something?

i know people who cheat the system as well, but i have to say i often do the odd cash job so i suppose i am cheating the tax system in a way

so i could not say anything to be honest lol

Atleast she defrauded the system for a reason.

not that i agree with it .but there are many out there who are very well off that would rather buy a plasma TV.

phone the hotline i work but can only earn £95 a week as i get carers allowance for my son who has a learning disability i make sure i m home for him at all times if i went over that amount they would take my huge amount of carers allowance off me which is £48 a week i see to all his personal needs, feed, dress well you could say i do all for him saying that i would do it for nothing hes my son people like that make me mad

Thats it, I see everyones point of view. Part of me thinks it was for a good reason but 2 of her kids are in care and she said her boyfriend, also not working was going. Its a very difficult issue.


Ok yes suppose I am peed of that its her 2nd holiday this year and we cant afford 1 as we are taxed at every angle and dont get anything ,

if she already has children in care
and you make that call. she could end up in prison and then all her kids would be taken away.
and for the sake of her defrauding for 2 weeks , is it really worth it.
But i do see why your miffed i would be too , but i dont think i could call the hotline .

If you don't, then you cant put your hand on your heart in the future and complain about benefit fraud.

i dont think id do anything to be honest altho its against the law i no people who do it somtimes and there nt hurting no one i supiose yes we pay our taxs but we would pay them anyways even if people didnt do guvvy jobs

As someone who used to work in the Benefits Office, I know their attitude towards the claimants. I resigned because of it.

Surely, if some one defrauds the system, then they should except the consequences.

If it was me I'd phone the hotline.

I think it's bad enough that people defraud a system that's there to help people who genuinely are in need (and I don't mind paying taxes to support those people)

but to boast about it as well is stupid, insensitive, and deserves a dobbing in as far as I'm concerned.

The clue was in your question Caz - conscience - some people just don't have one.

I might sound unsympathetic, but if your son is joining the specials - or is trying to - then you have an idea of what he will be faced with all the time.

Wheter they follow it up or not is up to them. Get her reported. Its a cop out to tell everyone then do nowt about it :-)

I feel strongly but dont know what to do, I didnt feel I could say much as a member of staff and thats partly why I posted.

It is very hard to watch someone with a better lifestyle who is cheating the system,
