Tip-
If you want to hatch fertile eggs, do not
refrigerate them beforehand.
Refrigeration drastically effects hatchability.

Something to be said for buying eggs layed by battery hens, they've never seen a cockerel so they're not likely to hatch. Although that doesn't seem to stop me buying free range organic.

TIP OF THE DAY...

Do NOT place overdue fertile eggs under the grill and then tap them!

Couldn't get rid of the smell for weeks and the kids went around gagging for two days!

Puss, if you really want to know, I have hatched eggs (well, my chickens have) from supermarket eggs. Obviously you need a free range hen with access to a cockerel, and most of our shop eggs are man-free. A hen can retain sperm for upto 12 days, apparently, and will sit on her eggs to incubate them when she thinks she has laid enough. Clever or what!

As for eggs, the shell develops as the yolk descends before being ready to be laid. Sometimes a new layer will lay an egg with a soft shell, which is really bizarre!
