Sue Report 3 May 2008 17:24

For those of you that know what I am talking about I hope you appreciate this, for those that don't spare us a thought or a laugh too.

In the morning I have to put my socks on. "Hmmmm so what" I hear you say! Well I can't bend down to put the right one on. So left sock goes on, oh goody, a warm foot. Now I have the torment of using the dreaded..........................................

SOCK AID

For those who don't know it is a preformed piece of plastic with very long cords attached to the upper sides. The idea is you slip the sock onto the form, stick your foot in it and pull the sock onto your foot and up to the ankle whilst withdrawing the plastic form.
Good eh?

Now for the truth!

You sit on the side of your bed and try to contort your body into a shape which means you don't have to use the sock aid. You know you can't, cos you tried it yesterday, your hands are still 18" away from your naked foot and you didn't turn into Twizzle overnight. (If you are not old enough to remember him please don't ask).

So you now slip the sock over the sock aid and chuck it onto the floor, remembering to hang on to the straps (silly!) and manoever it with other foot into a position where you can, please God, get your bare hoof into it.

Ah success, foot in the plastic part, you now haul on the straps and the sock, e v e r s o s l o w l y begins to move. Does it adhere to the laws of physics....NO it bl@@dy well doesn't, it twists. As you now draw the sock up the plastic form pops out and you nearly blind yourself as the hands tugging on the straps move at great speed toward your face.

With me so far?

Now looking at the foot you have a twisted sock halfway up it. Now here is a dilema....if you couldn't bend down to put the sock on how do you bend down and get it off? Didn't tell you how to handle that in occupational therapy did they?

So you have a choice now. Get the long handled shoe horn, reverse it and slide it down the top of the foot under the sock and try to push it off. OK in theory, gives a nice scrape mark on top of foot as a bonus. Or you can get your 'helping hand' and try to continue putting the offending sock on by trying to grip it and ease it up bit by bit. Well as I don't have the patience to sit there for 2 hours whilst inflicting large pinches on my lower extremity I don't do that.

So after turning bedroom air blue, you then retrieve the sock aid from where ever it landed after you have thrown it in temper. Put it and sock back in the drawer and wait for OH to come home.

Who designs these things?

If you have managed to read all this cr*p well done.

If you have laughed...good! My suffering isn't in vain then :-))

PMSL Sue. I hope you know I am laughing with you and not at you:)

It sounds like medieval torture and I am sure that sometimes you must feel like screaming but keep on laughing love. It is very therapeutic.

Woody's Report 3 May 2008 17:45

I see they haven't improved since 1993 then!
My late mum in law had the same problem - used to take her a good hour to get dressed every morning as she didn't want to admit she needed help.
She didn't wear socks, she wore tights, so you can imagine the twists they got into - not to mention the rips!

Oh God, don't remind me of the dreaded sock aid...what a stupid un-useable contraption that is. Never got the hang of it, had to get OH to put it on for me.

I got quite adept and putting on me knickers with the helping hand though...lol

I haven't worn tights since I had my hip done....LOL

roflmao, now, how do I get up again lol?

Sue, you should have seen me trying to cut my toenails today! I was on my own as o.h. at work, not that I would trust him with a pair of scissors or clippers lol, but the contortions I got into....!
I have problems getting my socks on too as I am getting so apple shaped and there is no bend in the rolypoly bit lol
I hate wearing tights, just about got them on the other day to go out, but this winter have been cheating by wearing my old leggings with holey crotches and then socks, and tucking everything into boots. Skirt over the top and no one would ever know unless the wind blows! So much easier to get on and still warm as toast, especially as no central heating in this house of o.h's only a gas fire in the open plan lounge so I was quite snug, altho looked a bit odd when I took the boots off and put my slippers on lol

Re the toenails I gave up waiting for an appointment and braved OH wielding clippers! Had no choice as I was in danger of lacerating his legs in bed!
