Have you tried the Rustic chips Anne, I think they are McCain, they came out top in a trial. I don't usually have a problem, maybe the thermostat on your cooker is a bit wonky. I cook mine on those baking sheets you use on trays to save the mess, they are £1 from the Poundshop, lol surprise surprise.
Some chips and roast potatoes actually have a batter on them, did you realise?
Good luck, maybe better to use potatoes, I scrub new potatoes or small ones, and cook in water in a casserole, in the microwave, for about ten mins, drain them then put on one of those baking sheets on a baking tray, sprinkle a little olive oil over and cook as long as required, you can have them soft or crispy on the outside, depending on what you are cooking in with them. Much more healthy, the smaller the chip the more oil on them so more fattening.

Actually I usually do my own but keep a bag of oven chips - yes oven chips ( for emergencies) - which I deep fry - only takes about 3 mins, totally ruins the oil but then you should not reuse oil already used once anyway (cholesterol).

I cannot believe Steve you dont know what oven chips are !

Also where is our artist for discussion? lol - - whoops just read through the other threads - *on bended knee* apologies Steve.xxx

If i put them on the for the time and at the heat it says on the bag they come out rock hard and burnt.........

So I figure - put them on a lower heat but for longer ............... they come out still uncooked in the middle

And to add insult to injury - i STILL manage to burn my tongue on the first one :O( lolol
