Helen1959 Report 21 Apr 2008 21:07

I feel so down. We have problems with the car, Now please forgive my explanation. I'm not a driver so can only go on what hubby tells me.

Last Sunday, hubby and I got into car to go to Dad's, and when he started engine, rev counter went upto 2500 and stayed there, drove to Dad's and pulled up, hubby got out of car leaving engine running, and it was still reving, it was as if he had his foot on the accelerator and was pumping it up and down. He switched engine off and then restarted it and it was still doing the same thing. (We have a Mitsubishi space Wagon 1994) Rang a friend of Dad's who said it was either the engine management chip or problems with the throttle. Hubby took it to Mitsubshi garage on the Monday and they had a look. they tried resetting the Engine chip but that didn't work and put it on diagnostic machine and it came back that the Throttle box had gone. To replace it will cost almost £900 with labour. Told them we would have to go away and try and arrange finance. We rang them on Thursday to say that we had managed to get the money and could they order the part. Ok they said, would take approx 2 weeks to get here.

I was telling the girls at work today and some of them suggested we get in touch with garage and ask if they would provide a curtasey car as hubby works funny shifts and no public transport. Spoke to hubby and he got in touch with garage, they said no as it wasn't an accident. Then they turned round and said that it could now be upto 6/8 weeks before part gets here, if they can get it due to age of car. When hubby told me that, I flipped, we are supposed to be going on a fishing holiday on the 17th of May with hubby's parents to North Wales. Well there's no way we can take equipment on train. Some one then suggested ringing insurance company to see if they could help. (D***** L***) which I did when I got home. They said we couldn't make a claim for repaires as it wasn't an accident. So then I asked well if they can't get part the car will be a write-off can we then make a claim. Got told, No as it wouldn't be due to accident/ fire or theft. So it now looks as though we can't go on holiday. I was so looking forward to it as we haven't been away on holiday since the week before I lost my Mum which will be 7 years in September. I'm so p****d off at the moment, I want to scream and cry. I just had to put my thoughts down in words otherwise i will do something to the b****y car.

thanks for letting me vent my feelings.

love
Helen

Helen,

have you tried a different garage? You may find a small local garage that will help and be able to locate the part from a breakers yard. I dont know much about car prices in the UK anymore but is a 1994 Space Wagon worth spending that much on?

I had one years ago (older than yours) and had similar problems. Was awaiting a part when some person stole it, took it drag racing and obviously blew the engine... I was livid at the time but in the end it was a blessing in disguise. I rang the garage to let them know that it had gone and they told me they were glad (!!!) as they were about to tell me to try a breakers as they had been told I was to wait another 6 weeks plus for the part!!

Why not try & get a second hand one from an auto salvage yard.

McB Report 21 Apr 2008 21:21

The garage is probably just trying to say in a round about way that they don't want the job so the give you an exorbitant price

Sorry i disappeared, hubby came home from work and we were talking.

Theresa, because of the complex nature of a Mitsubshi engine, alot of local garages will not touch them round here.
Brian, We had thought of that and asked the Mitsubshi garage if we managed to get a salvedged one form another Space Wagon could we get if fitted, they said that because there are so many sensors connected to the part, you couldn't guarantee that you would get all the correct ones to attach it to our car. We have spoken to other meccanic at a different garages and they wouldn't touch it.
I just feel like crying at the mo, because I was so looking forward to getting away.

I was lucky as a small garage owner nearby specialised in Japanese makes. He was good for all my cars until I got the Nissan and again we struggled for aprts on that one!!

Got a good old Opel now!!

Hi Helen,
So sorry to hear about the car.
If you can afford it, why not hire a car to go on your fishing holiday to North Wales?
Hope things work out for you.

Well we've still not heard anything about the part being here yet. One of the girls at hubby's work has offered us her car so that we can go on holiday. So hopefully I will get my holiday yet.

Well the latest news is that Mitsubshi are saying that because of the age of the car, they have got to get the part made and that it could be July before it gets here. Hubby has been looking on the Web and can get a second hand part for anything between £40 and £90 pounds but it is getting it fitted, so he told the garage this but they won't have anything to do with a second hand part, because they can't guarentee it. So am waiting for a phone call from workmate who's hubby is a mecanic to see if he knows of another garage in the area that deals with Space Wagons that will put in a second hand part. Another problem that the Mitsubshi garage said was that if we got a 2nd hand one it would have to be callibrated to the engine management chip in our car, so this is what we have got to find out if any other garage will do it. If we can't get it fixed then we shall have to get rid of the car, can't afford another new one so will have to look at 2nd hand ones.

Sorry to have another moan but at the moment all I want to do is cry.

Have you been to Trading Standards and talked to them? They might be able to persuade Mitsubishi to loan you a vehicle or something, or threaten to go to Watchdog on tv.
Good luck

Liz, we've already enquired about courtesy car but that's a no go. have been thinking tonight about going to trading standards about the length of time they have said, will see what happens tomorrow.
And have thought about Watchdog as well.

Oh I do hope you feel better soon xxxx I had an older car a renault and spent a small fortune on the garage not being able to tell me why it juddered in first gear - I changed loads of parts and still the same problem then my breaking point came when they told me the price to replace one part of the carb X hundred quid plus labour and couldnt say that would solve it!

In the end I bought a whole carb of the same model and year from Ebay and got change out of 50 quid including postage and OH fitted it for me.

Car drove like a dream thereafter ....I then had an oppertunity to buy a modern car off my sister with power steering abs and all the doings and ive known the car since new so was too good to turn down and I sold my renault in perfect working order!

Hi folks, just to let you know we now have the part. hubby went on web and ordered it from a spares dealer, who had only stripped it off the original car 10 mins before hubby had posted his request. It arrived this morning. Local mitsubshi garage will fit it now, but can't do it till next wednesday, Got my workmates hubby coming round at weekend to see if he can do it any quicker.
So it should all be fitted by this time next week. Thank God, As we go away on the Saturday.

Thanks for listening.

WELL I'M ALMOST READY TO PUSH THE BL***Y CAR OFF A CLIFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the part that we got for the car is not compatable. The Mitsubshi garage gave us the part number for the car and it was the correct one. But when hubby took the car to the garage today and they took the old part off the car, well the new part has 2 outlet pipes on it and guess what, ours has 3 pipes. Apparently when the made the Space wagon in 1994 they did them with 4 different throttle bodies, and we didn't know that. nobody would of known that until the old part was taken off. The mecanic said that it was ridiculous that they did that.
I was at work when eldest rang me to say that hubby had gone to get the car and I burst in to tears, thinking that the holiday was gone as we wouldn't get anything fixed before Saturday. They have said that the car can be driven on local journeys, but not on long ones.
I got home tonight and hubby said that his sister had rung to find out how we had got on. When hubby told her, she said that we will still be going on holiday and that her hubby was going to book a day off work and drive us there, and come and pick us up next week. We won't be able to take as much fishing equipment as we would normally but I don't care as long as we get away. We are meeting up with hubby's Mum and Dad who have booked the holiday and payed for the lodge as well, and I felt that we couldn't let them down.

Thank you all for listening to my woes and I'll bring you all a stick of rock back.

love
Helen.
