I had a thread about this. The best answer in my opinion was that you earn respect but expect politeness.

I''m not sure whether it answers your question though :-)

From my point of view, it is when you hear youngsters refer to you as " that woman". My OH says he hates going into shops ,garages, etc, and being called Sir, lol.

Sorry SR.Squirrel-it's 'cause I'm newish.
Round here you try & earn respect & go in to shock if any is shown!
Politeness is a long word for some locals-a 'grunt' is deemed acceptable.lol

In Cyprus, women of a certain age become 'yia yia'---granny--not only to immediate relatives, but to the whole community.
Yeah I'm a granny, but the little s****here still get the finger from me when deserved!

At 54 it's clear that I'm not old enough yet or is it because I'm a woman?

I had an eye appointment at the local Hospital, each person was called for as Mr or Mrs Whoever, When it came to my turn it was Davina Hughes and this was how I was addressed by two different people, I was extremely angry, I detest my first name and don't use it. I asked the second one why I was discriminated, she assured me it was because the other people were older than me. Funny then that the very next person called was younger than me and male and was called Mr Whoever.

I think we should respect people of all ages unless they show they are not worthy of it - age doesn't come into respect
