JackyJ1593 Report 16 Apr 2008 12:48

I have been back over the Ethel thread and it appears as Deb explained - when a member leaves, the post takes on the identity of a member next to the post. It did not just happen to me as I checked the membership number shown for many and it was always the same so it could have been Sheila or someone who was around at that time ( I can't remember who Dolores was).

Deb - It was me who origianlly copied the thread and had it printed for Gaynor but I don't have a copy now.

I don't know what has been going on and why there are references to things having turned nasty. I have read through the posts and can't see anything that would justify me being asked to remove this thread.

I have also written to Genes (Estelle as she was around at the time of Gynor and would understand) and asked for an explanation and have asked that under no circumstances does the Ethel thread get removed because of the membership numbers being mixed as it was nudged as a tribute.

Jacky :-)

Thanks tina

i knew you meant no malice & I agree maybe it will be a good idea for this thread to be removed when Jacky comes back online :o))

My main worry would be that people would ask for the pinny gang thread and the Ethel thread to be removed "because"

That would be really sad as those threads are a tribute to a much loved member.

I may put a footnote at the end of the threads explaining why it appears members are posting under different accounts :o))

I have now deleted all my responses done so before reading your request Elaine :))

Perhaps the whole thread should now be deleted, as my name is now mentioned on others posts, people now reading this thread will be wondering what was going on?

If not, for anybody that is reading this, I misunderstood the original question and came up with the theory that there may have been a member way back, who had changed their community name in a thread to different ones. This has now been explained why that happened fully and I accept the explanation. No malice was intended on my part.

Tina :)) xx

I googled my boardname yesterday and came up with a posting which was supposed to come from me about an ancestor I don't have and have never heard of.....

I got back on the success stories and found the posting......my name, but not my membership number and not any words of mine.......

I got onto GR and had an email reply that they had removed it........very quick response.....I presumed it was a glitch......

It is purely a GR Cockup, and nothing sinister or underhand.......its just unfortunate that comments that are attributed to the "Wrong"posters, make them suspicious

Viv it is to do with the programming of how it attaches a number to a post. Basically there is a vast database of numbers (the names are secondary) so whoever has programmed the site is using incorrect programming because instead of returning a nul response, it is programmed (or defaulting) to the next available I think.

When a member has deleted themselves from GC/GR then if their post remains it assumes the name and number of the previous or next members post. ( I can't remember which it is )

Blimey Deb - do you memorise membership numbers?
It's to do with the database of members I think.
Because the programming is incorrect, when a member deletes theirself the software still needs to assign a membership number to the post.

Tina - I know that the Pinny Gang threads were copied by a member on here. Maybe if that person (can't remember who?) is still around, that can verify waht I have said.

I think that the problem lays when a person deletes themselves all posts "bump up" to another persons number. I don't think I'm making sense, but know what I mean in my head :)

Tina
I can assure you that the thread is screwed up and no "particular member" posted as "multiple" people.
All the post are genuine, and posted by individual members of the "Pinny Gang"

I was only looking over my old threads a few weeks back and saw my name against other members posts. These people have/had a different membership number than mine.

I think that I'm trying to say what Karen has said.

Karen in the desert

Karen in the desert Report 14 Apr 2008 23:53

No no Tina, I think you've misunderstood..:)

It's because one or more members have left and their posts remain, and get tagged onto a current member, thereby taking that member's number.
If you have a look at who signed the posts, you will see who wrote them, rather than the board name. Those people have left, but their thread has been tagged onto the person who posted next to them.

I can pm you on the posts showing your name & membership number but if they just show your name (diff number) the pm is blank.
Probably best to leave it as if you contact GR they will just delete the entire thread.
