Just starting to try and come to terms with the loss of Mum which is hard enough.

Now my son-in-law Nick has been taken off in an ambulance to Treliske Hospital in Truro suffering from pericarditis. This is the 3rd time it has happened, and he is really poorly. Daughter Diana is following the ambulance down, so I am duty baby sitter, probably all through the night.

Please send POSITIVE thoughts for Nick.

Diana has just phoned from the hospital. They have made Nick comfortable in A&E, given him morphine for the pain, and now they are waiting for a doctor to come. Could be hours yet as Di said it's really busy in there. Still at least he's in the right place.

Hope you don't mind Pauline, I didn't know what this was so googled and thought I would post the info here as others might not know either.

Pericarditis : The pericardium is the thin, twolayered sac-like tissue that lubricates and surrounds the heart. It helps to keep the heart securely in place whilst protecting it from sudden movement, and acting as a barrier to infection or from tumours that may develop in neighbouring tissue. Pericarditis is the medical term used to describe inflammation of the pericardium. The condition can affect anyone, but is most common in men aged 20-50 years old.

Between the inner and outer layers of the pericardium there is a small amount of fluid that lubricates the hearts movement. If you have pericarditis, the amount of fluid increases and causes your heart to compress. This can prevent your heart from functioning normally and cause quite severe chest pains.

The condition most commonly occurs as a complication of a viral infection (such as coxsackie or mumps) and usually clears up in a few weeks often the only treatment needed is painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs). There are, however, some less common and more serious causes of pericarditis, such as heart attack, that might need further treatment


I do hope Nick is better soon. Always something to worry about isn't there?
