Have discovered yet another example of someone who has clearly passed on all the details of my family tree (presumably via a GEDCOM file) to someone with whom I have had no previous contact.

All MY notes in their original form are present, word for word - involving hours of research on place names, occupations, queries about possible mistakes etc. I know ALL the information came from me.

I URGE all of you with any concerns about privacy to be very careful about who you gives Tree Access to and to remember to remove that privilege once someone has had access (hit 'stop').

Not happy!

How do you check if someone has downloaded your tree please?

Lynda Carol

Lynda Carol Report 14 Apr 2008 15:52

Yes, it happened to me as well, so annoying when your tree is passed on without your permission

Deanna Report 14 Apr 2008 17:17

Well I do agree and thisnk we should have the right to deny access to our tree if we want to.
BUT I know of one person on here who has been told by GR to share her tree with someone who has asked her.... even though she does not want to.

How could GR have the right to tell me with whom I MUST share my tree?
Has anyone else been told this?

Deanna Report 14 Apr 2008 17:42

Neither did I, but I did hear of one who is quite upset about it.

Can't name names, but it worried me that I may be forced to share my tree.
For one... it cost me a firtune, if you want to talk to me about someone in my tree okay, but MUST I give you all of it?

I actually don't mind sharing with genuine people... and have done, but to be ordered to? I don't think that is right.

I don't think GR would ever say who we had to share our tree with.................maybe the person who said that misunderstood them.

If I was told to share my tree with someone I didn't want to share it with..............I would remove it from this site.

Me too Kitty, but I believe it to be true.

I would not lie to a friend so I don't expect them to lie to me.
It is very worrying though.

I'm not suggesting they lied to you Deanna......................but why on earth would GR worry about who has access to what tree?

Your tree belongs to you and you are the only one who has the ability to share or not..............not GR or another member.

I really think they have got it completely wrong.

I was the person who was asked by GR to let someone view my tree as the person had kept asking me to let them view my tree but i refused so they contacted GR who then emailed me about me letting the person view my tree

Thanks Lisa......................so you were asked rather than told.

That should put Deanna's mind at rest then..................I find it all a bit strange that they should go to the trouble of contacting you though, but GR sets the rules I suppose.

The subject of tree copying comes up at least once a week, usually on Tips.

The complaints I've heard, how true they are I couldn't say.

Whole trees been copied ie both Mum's & Dad's sides

Trees beoing copied & passed on to a third person who then copies the lot as well

Children appearing in other people's trees

Living people being copied

The odd professional copying trees & selling them!

As a result I no longer open my tree to anyone but I'm happy to share my information.

Opening your tree is giving permission to copy the lot, it's in the T&C's, although direct authority is required to include living people.

I think that GR just contacted me about it Kitty as they where sick of the other person contacting them, but i still don't think that they should have contacted me as i think if i don't let someone view my tree that should be the end of it

Even though you've ticked hide living relations, they will still show up by using the search box at the top of the screen.
It would be far better to buy some software such as Family Tree Maker (£5.99 in the supermarket) then you can keep your full tree on there & delete the living from GR tree

Just a reminder, if you decide to contact a 'hot' match, make sure you untick the box that allows the other person to see your tree, before you send it. I believe GR should have the box blank and we have to actively tick it if we want the other person to view our tree. Alternatively if that box was above the 'send' box we would not forget to untick it.
