I joined to try and find out about my family history and see if anyone else was researching the same line and could help. We don't know who my dad's dad was and his mum abandoned him and left him with his grandparents. I wanted to see if I could find out a bit of history about where dads family came from, he never really talked about his family when I was growing up (no surprise really!). Not really in touch with the other side of the family either so it was interesting to see what turned up. I have come to a resounding standstill on dads side now (got back to 1817 and my 3xg grandfather) - no-one seems to be able to help, but the odd hot match has been worth following up, and people are so helpful when you contact them. Unfortunately, everyone seems to be descended from my gg grand dads siblings! Never mind, one day someone might turn up! I've only just scratched the surface of the other side, but have already found out that they were not welsh as we were always told but from Somerset! I also use ancestry, but like most people keep my main tree (with as much detail as possible) on separate software. I use Family Historian.

I didn't join, lol.... my neighbours 12 year old joined me!! I had just got my laptop... she used to spend an evening a week with me while her parents were out... she was my techie, lol... I still don't know how to play with the VCR/DVD thingie.

I typed in the basics, and straight away got a match with a first cousin... I haven't seen her since she was a small child.

It went on from there... I have been fortunate enough to have had some absolutely excellent hot matches, and have met some lovely rellies... who have been very generous with sharing the family photos (My Gt Gt Grandmother lived with their Gt Grandmother (My gt Grandfather's sister) when she was older... she had all the photos... so I now have photos on that line going back to my 4 x gt grandmother... how wonderful is that!!

I have recently discovered a relative who was transported on the First Fleet, and he married a young woman was also transported on the so-called Floating Brothel....... So that is a twig I am learning about now..... Well with the help of *Susan with the numbers* who has helped so much with that... and Susan has helped with other areas as well....

By the way... FTM can be bought at any good computer store, or on line... google it... look out for bargains though... sometimes they have trial offers, so you can get it at a reduced rate.

Love

Daff.... who still has LOADS to do on her tree!! xxxxx

Afternoon Secret Squirrel......My Dad was always talking about his Dad and Mum and how he didn't know much about their parents or brothers and sisters.......so I started with my paternal Grandmother who had an unusual name, and I was lucky enough to be picked up by a genealogist who had been working on that name and its derivatives for more than 35 years, and he took me back to 1705......but when I told my Dad his Mum was the youngest of 13 children.....he said OH NO.....you are wrong, she came from a posh family, they had butchers and hairdressing shops.......so I didn't tell him any more.....

......then went onto my Scottish side, and apart from my Grandfather having the Scottish equivalent of John Smith.......I found it fairly easy to find ancestors because of the info on the Scottish BMD certs......also having a Mum who told me family stories, kept photos and had a Gt. Uncle who was around till I was a teenager....

......tried OH's relations and have got back to late 1700's on one side and mid 18's onthe other.....

......after a while I found the chat boards and joined in, and never looked back.....

Hi everyone
I joined last year. One of my cousins started me off by sending me info on my fathers family so i decided to have a go at finding more. Got lots of tips from other members and different websites to look at. Have been in contact with another cousin i found through GR, we are going to meet up soon. Its very addictive and i look through the boards from time to time, some of the chat makes me smile! :-)))

Like Kitty I had recently acquired a computer.
Someone recommended this site to me when I said I wanted to do our family tree. I've had loads of help useful information since joining from the members on here for which i'm really grateful. Lots of very good matches too, I've come across several family members we were unaware of also using this site for their research.

I have my tree on my Heredis Programme, I also keep it here in case of further matches.

As an added bonus I have made some good friends here and although I don't always post I love reading the boards they can be so entertaining and informative.

I joined to find out where to look for basic information....................I was new to using a pc and hopelessly lost on ther internet.

I have learned a great deal and still have a lot to find out.

I started using the general board last July.................the beginning of the summer holidays when I was going to do loads on my tree!! LOL

The progress on my tree has got steadily slower as I have met so many lovely people on here:))

I set out to do my tree, which was extremely bare. I had been attempting to do it for many years, pre-computer days, which was slow going. And then, living overseas, the whole thing got shelved.

UNTIL......da da da daaaaaaah....family history started appearing on-line. Wow, I couldn't have been a happier bunny. It meant I could do my tree from the comfort of my own desert!!
I joined GR because I didn't have a clue how to go about finding what I wanted, and I will be forever grateful to the helpful peeps on here, especially on Tips and Records.

I no longer keep much of my tree on GR because I have FTM now. I've never had any luck with Not Matches, but I still gain loads of useful info from Tips and Records and love to join in on General whenever I can. General has often proved a saviour to me, as I spend a lot of time alone, it's a lovely feeling to know I've got company and someone to chat to at any time of night or day.

Where do I get one ... and how much is it please??

I joined to do my tree and have had a great time.
I have found things I never knew about people who were so close to me in my life.
through other GR members I have found people I could not find.... after looking for months and months.

through GR, I found a branch of my paternal family in Edinburgh.... I knew nothing about them. I thought the only ones we had were from Glasgow Lanarkshire.

I've had a great time on here....

AND THEN, there is the general board which I could not live without.
I talk about it all the time, my husband doesn't know which of you is which.... and my son says "they are not called *the 'BOREDS' for nothing* ;-0)

They may get bored with you, but you are my life line sometimes.... thank you.
